AASL #1: INQUIRE, THINK CRITICALLY AND GAIN KNOWLEDGE

Common Core Standard CC.1.R.5

Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text.

EXAMPLE LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES

Napping House (sequencing, grades K-1) Alphabetize Author Sticks (grades 2-6) Hula Hoop Sorting (Pre-K – grade 2) Library Scavenger Hunt (Grades 3-6)

RELEVANCE

Sorting and sequencing helps students to organize their thoughts for more complex writing.

Scavenger hunts provide opportunities for group

collaboration and to learn basic search skills. Allows students to learn more efficient research by

using table of contents, indexes, alphabetization and number order.

LESSON: ANIMAL RESEARCH PROJECT

Goals ● Students will learn how to use an index and globe. ● Students will learn the basic components of a

research paper. ● Students will be introduced or practice speaking

skills. *Project was implemented with first graders but can

be revised for higher grades.

RELEVANCE

With support, first graders can build a one paragraph report with drawings and photos

The project provides a chance for students to successfully step through the research process and organize their thoughts.

AASL #3: SHARE KNOWLEDGE AND PARTICIPATE ETHICALLY AND PRODUCTIVELY AS MEMBERS

OF OUR DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY.

Common Core Standards CC.3.W.10 Range of Writing: Write routinely over extended

time frames (time for research, reflection and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline specific tasks, purposes and audiences.

CC.5.W.2 Text Types and Purposes: Write information/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

LESSON: THE ADVENTURER BLOG

Goals: Students will locate and gather resources on their chosen adventurer and begin to compile information using the worksheet provided. Students will use the information they collected about their adventurer to answer specific questions in their weekly blog posts.

RELEVANCE

Learning communication and technological skills leads to greater understanding. Taking information gathered during the research process and blogging about the most important information allows the students to not only learn the information for themselves, but to also take part in the teaching process as they teach their classmates about their adventurer.

AASL #4 PURSUE PERSONAL AND AESTHETIC GROWTH

Common Core Standards CC.1.R.L.2 Key Ideas and Details: Recount Stories,

including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson or moral.

CC.1.R.L.3 Key Ideas and Details: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. Relevance: By learning to identify the key ideas of a story, students will learn the important building blocks that

FAIRY TALE LESSON Goals: Students will learn about the history and elements of fairy tales

and be able to identify these elements in a specific fairy tale Students will review the elements and history of fairy tales

paying specific attention to how different cultures tell the same story.

Students will choose a fairy tale to read and analyze. They will decide what are the most important elements and scenes in the story and use those choices to rewrite their fairy tale.

RELEVANCE

By learning to identify the key components of a story, students will learn the important building blocks that they will use when they write.

Northwood Books for Young Readers, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library Adventurer's Blog Kidblog.org- excellent blog hosting site that allows teachers to organize students

into classes. Students can see and comment on each others blogs, but the blog can be set to private so that no one can see the blog without a password. (this is a free service)

Microsoft Clip Art Gallery- an easy to use website that allows students to search for appropriately licensed images to use in their blogs.

Fairy Tales Windows Live Movie Maker- any movie making software can be used. iMovie,

Vimeo or Animoto could also be used. Beatpick.com- this is a database of available music that can be used free of

charge.
