AAST. IGNATIUS COLLEGE August 22, 2004 Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, AS DID IGNATIUS LOYOLA YEARS AGO, I WENT ON RETREAT TO A BENEDICTINE abbey. I fear my summer meditations did not begin to come near those ex- perienced by our Holy Founder, but the days of prayer, I hope, brought me closer to Jesus and to his people, to whose service we Jesuits are committed. St. Ignatius taught his followers to find God in all things, to be contempla- tives in action. Thus it is this first day of the new school year, we welcome our young charges to formation in Christ, the educational mission of the Gospels passed down in the tradition of the Soldier-Saint, who teaches that schooling is not for ourselves, but “for others” to make the world better, to make His kingdom come. In his autobiography, Ignatius tells us that in the cave of Manresa as he grew in the Spirit after the Montserrat monastery, ”God treated him just as a schoolmaster treats a little boy when he teaches him.” That loving image has never been forgotten in Jesuit schools. Every member of our fac- ulty and staff, lay and Jesuit, women and men, teachers, counselors, campus ministers, coaches, yes, and administrators, seeks only to facilitate our stu- dents’ encounters with God. Ignatius called his pedagogy “cura personalis(care of the person) individualized, intimate, loving. As God loves each of us in a profoundly personal way, so, too, do we our students from the first day of freshman year to graduation and beyond. To matriculate to SI is to join a family, a community, which con- tinues for life. St. Ignatius College Preparatory, as frightening as it could be for a young freshman just starting out, is a community of friends; it is an academic community striving — AMDG — to fashion and hone your daughter’s or son’s God-given talents into skills that serve; however, the emphasis on the attainment of intellectual excellence does not denigrate the co-curricular, the ideal of “mens sana in corpore sano,” the social, nor, of course, the spiritual. Every staff member seeks to emulate Ignatius’s experi- ence — to teach as Jesus did. Thus kids need not be nervous; they are among friends in the Lord! The whole school community is here to give support, strength, spirit and love to our students in their quest for the Magis, the greatest possible enhancement of their gifts so that they can live and serve happily, peacefully, capably and well. This fourteenth Annual Report is for the members of the Ignatian family who support the Prep in the same way our staff supports our stu- dents. Because of your generosity, SI can go forward. As Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador once told his people, heartily and enthusiastically, I tell all of you: “Con este pueblo no cuesta ser un buen pastor” — “With such people, it is not hard to be a good pastor.” On behalf of all of us here at 2001 – 37 th Avenue, especially our students, thank you! Let me conclude with an excerpt from a student’s prayer taken from In All Things: Everyday Prayers of Jesuit High School Students: “I thank you, God, not only through this prayer, but in every essay I write, in every test I take, and every ball I shoot. Thank you, God, for my school. Amen.” God bless you all, and Peace! Most gratefully, Anthony P. Sauer, SJ GENESIS IV A Report to Concerned Individuals Vo. 41 No. 3 Fall 2004 The Rev. Anthony P. The SI community enjoyed a tremendous fashion show and International Food Faire thanks to the generous volunteer mothers of the Ignatian Guild.

Fathers’ Club president Joe Toboni passed the torch to Steve Leveroni at the end-of-the-year luncheon last June. The club’s annual auction and other fund-raisers brought in a record $450,000 to the school.

We especially thank the following lifetime friends who have made provisions in their estate

plans — bequests, charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance or retirement funds — to support

SI’s Endowment Fund. Such gifts provide for the long-term welfare of SI and may also provide

donors with valuable tax and income benefits during their lifetime. The forethought and

generosity of the following is most appreciated.

Contributions Report

Slow Economy Spurs Sacrificial Giving

An si football coach of yore was wont to say, “when

the going gets tough, the tough get going.” so too with si’s

generous benefactors. Although fiscal year 2002–2003 may

not have set all-time records in terms of dollars raised, it

certainly set records in terms of sacrificial giving.

despite the deep cuts in the Bay Area job market and

sluggish performance of the national economy, si families,

alumni and friends dug a little deeper this year — to the tune

of more than $5 million — to keep si both excellent and

affordable.

Along with keeping the $50 million endow si campaign

on track (more than $44 million raised since the december ’96

kickoff with two years to go), our benefactors supported major

improvements in technology, curriculum and instruction.

Further, more than $1 million was given away to financially

strapped si parents — a number of whom had lost their jobs

— allowing them to keep their sons and daughters at si.

our very special thanks to all of you who did more

than your share to support si during this difficult year. some

wonderful kids have been the ultimate beneficiaries.
