AAU Ice Hockey - Our 12th Season (2020-2021) Normally our August edition of this newsletter would be to announce the start of our new season and try to give our members as much information as possible. Obviously, this is an attempting to get everyone quickly registered as members of AAU, to help get our teams and leagues formed, as well as to begin planning for tournaments. At one point not too long ago, it did appear that we may have opened our hockey operations pretty much like normal. However, with the dramatic spikes in the numbers of COVID-19 cases that are occurring within many of our US States (those that have relaxed their restrictions apparently far too early), a normal AAU Ice Hockey season may simply become wishful thinking (certainly within some areas). Unfortunately, with an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that is clearly NOT being controlled within the US (and in fact appears to be getting far worse), this certainly can NOT be a typical season. Therefore, this will NOT be a typical first edition of the season either. Instead lets simply focus upon some questions and answers (at least as best as we can, during such an uncertain time). QUESTION 1: Has the 2020-2021 AAU Ice Hockey season been cancelled? NO. However, to be completely honest with our members, we currently have no idea whether the season may or may not be cancelled at sometime in the future. In addition, we are also very much dependent upon our local ice rinks and arenas. We could even find that our AAU Ice Hockey programs may begin operations within one State or Province (or even within one County), while not operating at all within another. Therefore, it may be wise for our members to research local operations first, before getting too carried away with planning (such as determining whether our local State and/or County will even permit hockey, will ice rinks be open locally, will any AAU leagues function within our area, etc.). AAU Ice Hockey - Our 12th Season (2020-2021) Normally our August edition of this newsletter would be to announce

the start of our new season and try to give our members as much

information as possible. Obviously, this is an attempting to get everyone

quickly registered as members of AAU, to help get our teams and leagues

formed, as well as to begin planning for tournaments.

At one point not too long ago, it did appear that we may have opened

our hockey operations pretty much like normal. However, with the

dramatic spikes in the numbers of COVID-19 cases that are occurring

within many of our US States (those that have relaxed their restrictions

apparently far too early), a normal AAU Ice Hockey season may simply

become wishful thinking (certainly within some areas).

Unfortunately, with an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that is clearly

NOT being controlled within the US (and in fact appears to be getting far

worse), this certainly can NOT be a typical season.

Therefore, this will NOT be a typical first edition of the season either.

Instead lets simply focus upon some questions and answers (at least as

best as we can, during such an uncertain time).

QUESTION 1: Has the 2020-2021 AAU Ice Hockey season

been cancelled? NO.

However, to be completely honest with our members, we

currently have no idea whether the season may or may not be

cancelled at sometime in the future.

In addition, we are also very much dependent upon our local

ice rinks and arenas.

We could even find that our AAU Ice Hockey programs may

begin operations within one State or Province (or even within

one County), while not operating at all within another.

Therefore, it may be wise for our members to research local

operations first, before getting too carried away with planning

(such as determining whether our local State and/or County will

even permit hockey, will ice rinks be open locally, will any AAU

leagues function within our area, etc.).

Next edition will likely

be released Oct. 1st. (possibly earlier if needed)

We must all keep in mind that AAU requires that we fully

comply with any and all (City, County, State, Provincial

and National) restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

QUESTION 2: Will our AAU Ice Hockey programs begin operations in a typical fashion?

Well here comes a highly unusual answer. “We simply don’t know.”

As mentioned on the prior page, it is technically possible that within some areas AAU Hockey may

begin and function in a somewhat normal fashion, albeit possibly within a more localized setting.

Yet functioning as normal, with widespread leagues and tournaments may be questionable, at this

present time. We should learn far more as we see the effects of our schools opening.

QUESTION 3: Will our AAU League begin operations as normal? AAU Leagues are

certainly possible and yet still, possibly NOT within some areas.

Please be aware that at least one of our AAU leagues has already informed us that they have no

intention of operating at all during the 2020-2021 season. Of course, they could reassess their

operations, if and when matters do improve.

Therefore, again we strongly recommend that before any of our members get too carried away

with registration, forming teams and making too many plans, they should make contact with their

local league to be certain that they intend to operate. Also to learn about their scheduling plans.

QUESTION 4: Will there be any AAU Tournaments during the 2020-2021 season? As

with Leagues, AAU Tournaments are possible and yet still possibly NOT within some

areas.

There are plenty of AAU Tournaments being advertised, almost like a typical season. Yet some

are also laying out their refund policies in case their tournament can’t take place due to COVID-19.

As with concerns over the availability of a local League, it would be prudent to investigate COVID-

19 restrictions within the area where you may be considering as a Tournament locale.

It may also be prudent to inquire about Refund Policies before sending a Deposit and maybe even

delay in sending any deposits to be more certain that a tournament may actually occur.

QUESTION 5: Should we quickly obtain our AAU membership during the month of

August as usual? Please understand that you may obtain your AAU membership on

August 15th or later if you wish. However, there is also no big rush.

The online AAU membership process is rather quick and easy, also Team (Club) membership and

even forming a League and/or Tournament. Therefore, it’s OK to wait until you are certain that:

your State, Province and/or County will even permit hockey,

local rinks will in fact be open,

local Team, League and/or Tournaments will be available,

Again, please check with your local AAU Hockey League. If available then certainly feel free to get your

AAU membership. If NOT available within your area then remember to keep checking back.

Things may very well change.

Youth League Plans:

Chicago United Hockey League (CUHL) - Plans to open about like normal (State and Rinks

permitting) as about mid-September. However, if not possible in September then a back-up plan

is in the works for a condensed-season opening in October or November.

Choice - Minnesota Made Hockey - No current announcement, although 2020-21 registration is

open, The state of Minnesota currently allows youth sports with some restrictions.

Great Lakes Hockey League - Plans to open about like normal (State and Rinks permitting). At

present, rinks are open.

Michigan Amateur Youth Hockey League (MAYHL) - Plans to open about like normal (State

and Rinks permitting). However, at present Michigan rinks within much of the AAU Hockey area

are closed and the State has not yet allowed hockey (regions 6 & 8, northern Michigan are open).

NE Amateur Hockey League (NEAHL) - Plans to open about like normal (States and Rinks

permitting) with Jamborees beginning in early October. Currently rinks are open in Connecticut,

New Hampshire and Vermont. Rhode Island expect to open soon. Massachusetts rinks have

opened for practice and skills (no games authorized at this time, coming soon).

Ontario Rep Hockey League (ORHL) - Things are heading in the right direction in Canada. The

government is taking things very slowly and monitoring situations very carefully. The ORHL is

planning on operating as close to normal as possible. Indoor gatherings has just increased from

10 – 50 people which is a good sign. The one major challenge is the US/Canada border being

closed. This will limit cross-border activity for teams until this closure is lifted.

St. Louis Hockey League - Plans to open about like normal (State and Rinks permitting).

Scholastic League Plans:

New York Islanders High School Hockey League - Plans to open about like normal (State

and Rinks permitting). Rinks in the area are already partially opened with some restrictions.

WNY High School Club Hockey League (WNYHSCHL) - Plans to open about like normal (State

and Rinks permitting) at the normal time around Veterans Day. Currently, WNY area rinks are in

fact open and operational.

Junior League Plans:

Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League (CPJHL) - Plans to open about like normal (Province

and Rinks permitting). Currently coordinating with public health officials.

Western States Hockey League (WSHL) - Plans to NOT open at all for the 2020-21 season.

Although reserving the right to reassess if the COVID-19 environment changes for the better.

Collegiate League Plans:

Collegiate Hockey Federation - No information at this time. Plans being developed.

An important question for our AAU members to ask is, “Can masks help prevent the spread of

the coronavirus that causes COVID-19? Yes, face masks combined with other preventive

measures, such as frequent hand-washing and social distancing, help slow the spread of the virus.” https://

www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-mask/art-20485449

While many states and communities have tried using a host of efforts (including; travel bans, shelter in

place orders, shutting down businesses), to date the simplest and most effective means of curtailing the

spread of COVID-19 has been for people to simply wear a face-mask and social distance whenever you are

in public, most especially when indoors.

At publication time for this article, it appears that our 2020-2021 AAU Ice Hockey leagues and

tournaments may begin within a somewhat normal fashion.

Assuming that our individual governments do allow our sports programs to operate and our local ice rinks

and arenas do open up for business, there are some things that we can do and should do, to end the spread

of COVID-19. Thereby assuring that our AAU Hockey programs can remain open, while keeping our kids,

families and communities safe.

So why wouldn’t we all simply utilize face-masks and social-

distancing when ever we’re attending our AAU Ice Hockey practices

and games?

Frankly, if everyone within the US were to simply begin wearing a mask every time that they leave their homes then the spread of COVID-19 would pretty much end within 3-4 weeks (author’s personal opinion).

Non-players and non-coaches should NOT be permitted to enter a dressing-room. Parents,

siblings, spectators should NOT be permitted into the dressing-rooms at all nor be permitted to

congregate around them. Social distance! Obviously, with younger players (if at all possible) it would

be advisable that they dress before coming to the facility.

All spectators and participants should be wearing protective face-masks during all team

functions. This means while entering the rinks, the dressing-rooms and even while sitting within the

spectator stands. Likely to be required by States & Provinces anyway. Yet if not, still a good idea.

All players and coaches should be wearing masks whenever entering dressing-rooms and

while on the Players Bench. Players should have masks on while dressing and/or lacing up their

skates. Then when it’s time to put on their helmet, simply remove the cloth-paper mask and replace

with their helmet. Likely to be required by States & Provinces anyway. Yet if not, still a good idea.

All players would be advised to upgrade and begin wearing a more protective full plastic

(polycarbonate) face-shield (rather than a wire-cage) on the bench and ice. Of course, wire-

If AAU Hockey begins within your area then please consider the following

- continued on the following page -

The following are NOT requirements of AAU Hockey. However, these are strongly recommended.

Please consider these helpful ideas for operating within the current COVID-19 environment:

Page 5: AAU Ice Hockey Newsletter - 2019 May Editionimage.aausports.org/dnn/hockey/2020/AAU-Ice-Hockey... · AAU Ice Hockey August 1, 2020 Season 12 - Edition 1 Page 2 QUESTION 2: Will our

cage masks would wrongfully permit the exhaling of both large and small particle droplets onto

others, while Full-Shields do far more in restricting a players breath from reaching others. In addition,

a Full-Shield will protect the player who wears them from having the breath and exhaled particles

from others reach their own eyes and nose. Please view the Bauer and CCM models available

below.

All players should have their own specific water bottle (with their own name on it) and

coaches should assure that there is NO sharing of water bottles. Maybe a good idea anytime.

If we all take these efforts serious then we may be able to enjoy another season of AAU Ice Hockey. Of

course, it only takes one person to ruin our AAU Ice Hockey season. One member, family, team or league

not taking this serious and we may very well see our entire season come to a screeching halt.
