COZY QUILTERS The group continues to stitch up creative pieces at its gatherings. Most recently we met at the home of Judith Hromoko. She has successfully hand-quilted her “purple pansy” mini-quilt. Irene Ribaudo has put together a “water color technique” wall hanging. Marie Hagemann has finished her “stack and whack” full-sized quilt. Ever trying new designs, Maria Sendzik has pieced a “wonky 1 block” quilt. She also will be attending the National Quilters’ Convention in Houston, Texas the first weekend in November. Barbara Tuzio has completed a Thanksgiving table runner. The next meetings will be November 3 at the home of Marie Hagemann and November 16 at the home of Barbara Tuzio, both at 2pm. Come and join us. Any type of needlework welcome. Also great desserts. Barbara Tuzio

PSYCHIC NIGHT

A Mystical, Metaphysical evening was had!

It was a dark and gloomy night but that did not stop guests from gathering at the Chelsea (formerly The Worthington) for a Psychic Night with members of Charmed in Company. The Chelsea provided all with refreshments, a lovely gathering place for the readings of tarots, palms, or interpretative astrology and the friendly and helpful assistance from AAUW NOCB members. Many thanks to Marie Sweeney, Diane Becza, Joan Hogan, Pam Coratti, Pat Baroska, Susan Haas, Barbara Tuzio and Judith Hromoko for making this night a success! Maureen Mitchell

Lilly Ledbetter’s book, Grace and Grit- My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond, is now available on Amazon. The book chronicles her struggle for justice after years of pay discrimination at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. After the Supreme Court decided against her, legislation was passed amending the loophole that Goodyear exploited. President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law in September 2009. AAUW worked closely with Ledbetter to fight pay discrimination and congratulates her on this important work. Today women working full-time earn on average 77 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn. Marlene Snedaker

AAUW CELEBRATES 130 YEARS! JOIN US!

AAUW Celebrates its 130th Anniversary.... To honor this

auspicious occasion, November is being declared National AAUW Month! Nationwide "Cocktails and Convos” night (Drinks and Conversations) is being celebrated by all of our branches on No-vember 8, 2011 (Election Day). The focus of the evening will be AAUW's new "My VOTE Cam-paign", with special emphasis on promoting young women to register to vote. We are having an Inter-Branch gathering at "Moore's Tavern" 402 West Main Street Freehold, NJ 07728 at 4:30pm Nov. 8. We will distribute Voter Registration Forms to all AAUW Branches. Let us raise our glasses in Celebration and enjoy 1/2 price appetizers and dis-counted drinks... The history of Moore's can be traced back to the 1800's like AAUW... Let us Celebrate with any member who might be able to attend... Please RSVP Attendance... [email protected] Remember... American Association of University Women began with the meeting of a group of women who defied society's standards by earning college degrees in 1881. They envisioned an organization in which women college graduates could band together to open doors of higher edu-cation to other women and find wider opportunities to use their training. For 130 years, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day as education-al, social, economic and political. Our commitment to our mission is reflected in all aspects of our work. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND For more than a century, AAUW has advanced educational and professional opportunities for women nationally and globally—funding women pursuing advanced degrees, fostering girls’ achievement and gender equity, and supporting women entering new or nontraditional careers. It’s time to review the five categories of fellowships and grants available through the AAUW Educational Opportunities Funds (formerly Educational Foundation): AMERICAN FELLOWSHIPS support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANTS support women who hold a bachelor’s degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the workforce. SELECTED PROFESSIONS FELLOWSHIPS are awarded to women to pursue a full-time course of study in a master’s degree program in which women’s participation traditionally has been low (architecture, computer/information sciences, engineering, mathematics/statistics). COMMUNITY ACTION GRANTS provide seed money to women, AAUW branches, AAUW state organizations, and nonprofit organizations (including universities) for innovative programs or nondegree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls. INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited institutions are supported. Now that funding for our branch’s Research and Project Grant is complete, we will be hearing from AAUW about a recipient of a grant next year. We also must continue to support EO through future contributions. Barbara Tuzio

The NOCB-AAUW Community Service Project “Stand Up For Yourself” will be held on December 3, 2011 at Georgian Court University. This program to address bullying is again presented in part-nership with the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore for 10 and 11 year old girls. Students from Point Pleasant Borough High School will lead the discussion during the break-out sessions with at least one of our members in the break-out room to observe the session and, if needed, to assist with the discussion. Women in Leadership Development) (WILD) at Georgian Court U., an AAUW Partner University, will be volunteering their assistance. Many of you have helped to monitor the break-out sessions in the past, and we hope that you will be able to volunteer again this year. Of course, new volunteers are always welcome. Please call Eve at 732-714-9158 or Marie at 732-295-1439 to sign up. We think that you will find it a rewarding experience. Eve Stafford Smith & Marie Hagemann

AAUW-NJ FALL FOCUS MEETING Pat Baroska, Marlene Snedaker, Alice Tarlach and Barbara Tuzio attended the Fall Focus meeting October 15 at the Courtyard Marriott, Cranbury/South Brunswick. After breakfast and a welcome by President Sally Goodson, Adrienne Lesser and Ginny Lyttle gave an update on the College/University Connection, a pro-gram to encourage C/U’s to join AAUW. All students in the schools could join AAUW as e-members. Then a technology report was given on Teleconferencing, PayPal, and Robotics and Yahoo Groups. Other reports included National Leadership Corps, Fifty Year Plus Members, and the National AAUW Convention Report with a particularly emtertaining presentation by Stella Hyman about Lobby Day and her journey home. The highlight of the morning was a presentation by the W.I.L.D. (Women in Leadership Development) women of Georgian Court University about the NCCWSL (pronounced “nickwhistle”) women. Under the di-rection of moderator Ashley Hobbs (on the right), 2 students related their experiences at NCCWSL, the Na-tional Conference for College Women Student Leaders, which is AAUW’s annual National Leadership Con-ference at the University of Maryland. They were excited, enthusiastic, and articulate. Two other young la-dies gave a brief overview of W.I.L.D., a program unique to Georgian Court U. After lunch the focus was on the Program in a Box Series described on the aauw.org website. The goals were to make members familiar with the programs and to encourage branch use. On each table was a gift-box which contained the topic to plan. In the workship, our members and 3 from Sussex County Branch along with moderator Joan Odud, AAUW NJ C/U Chair, planned a hypothetical program on Violence Against Women using the guidelines found in the giftbox. Barbara Tuzio represented our table and related to the attendees how we would present our Program in a Box. AAUW NJ meetings are always jam-packed with ideas, news and activities. All attendees come away full of enthusiasm and pride in belonging to AAUW. Come along to the next AAUW NJ meeting in April. You will be full of enthusiasm too! Barbara Tuzio

Last year the Northern Monmouth and Freehold branches supported 2 ladies by sending them to the Young AAUW National Conference. They were very enthused by this conference and enrolled in student memberships in AAUW. Georgian Court is in our county so let’s raise the money and join the cause! We are going to collect items for a basket to raffle in the Spring. It will be our “Good Health” basket so please bring an item in this theme to donate the next time we meet. Proceeds will fund sending a student to the conference next May. Alice Tarlach
