It is important for today’s engineering students to gain experience with serious FEA software. To meet this need, SIMULIA, the Dassault Systèmes brand for realistic simulation, has expanded its Abaqus academic suite to empower professors with state-of-the-art FEA software for introductory and advanced coursework. Exposure to the full version of Abaqus provides today’s students with a strong, competitive advantage at graduation.

Abaqus is a suite of powerful engineering simulation programs, based on the finite element method, for solving problems ranging from relatively simple linear analyses to the most challenging nonlinear simulations. It contains an extensive library of elements that can model virtually any geometry. Abaqus also has an equally extensive list of material models that can simulate the behavior of most typical engineering materials including metals, rubber, polymers, composites, reinforced concrete, crushable and resilient foams, and geotechnical materials such as soils and rock. Abaqus/Standard and Abaqus/Explicit can be integrated in the same analysis problem, allowing Abaqus/Standard to be applied to those portions of the analysis that are well-suited to implicit solution techniques, and Abaqus/Explicit to be applied to the portions of the analysis where high-speed, nonlinear, transient response dominates the solution.

SIMULIA offers a suite of programs to academic institutions for research and teaching activities. For over two decades, Abaqus FEA has been used at leading institutions around the world.

The Abaqus Research Edition has the same functionality as commercial versions, enabling students in master’s and doctoral programs to analyze and solve realistic engineering problems. Powerful user-defined subroutines allow flexibility in modeling advanced research materials, complex surface and contact behaviors, and other user-specific features. Users also have access to advanced capabilities like parallel processing and co-simulation.

Abaqus Teaching Editions complement the Research Edition by allowing students to run Abaqus/Standard, Abaqus/Explicit, and Abaqus/CAE in a classroom setting. With a choice of problem size limitations and access for 20 or more simultaneous users, it is a cost effective way to introduce students to the benefits of robust FEA.

The Abaqus Student Edition is a low-cost, personal, finite element analysis tool for solving limited size problems (1,000 nodes) not requiring user subroutines. This edition is the ideal tool for students who wish to become more proficient with Abaqus.

Sachin P. Budhabhatti used Abaqus to examine metatarsal pad placement and size on forefoot pressure during walking. He concluded that a large pad placed at 5mm proximal to the peak pressure site was most effective in reducing peak pressure.
