HV NonCurrent Limiting Fuses

1Expulsion fuses Outdoor fuses for protection of overhead lines and distribution transformers. They comprise a tin or copper fuse element in series with a flexible braid in a tube.

2) Liquid fusesBased on early noncurrent limiting fuses that use liquids ( mostly hydrocarbon) to quench the arc.

HV fuses – Fuse parametersFuse parameters

Switching voltages limits

As shown on the previous chart the fuse must generate an arc voltage which exceeds the operating voltage. That means when the operating voltage increase, a fuse which will generate a sufficient arc voltage must be chosen. Practically this is done by increasing the length of each fuse element. As shown in fig. 5 under short circuit conditions the arc voltage will start in all notches simultaneously and spread from the starting points against neighboring notches. The total arc voltage is a function of the arc length. Increasing arc length gives a higher arc voltage.

The switching voltage generated by CEF fuses are below these limits and a CEF fuse can safely be used if the system voltage is 50 100% of rated fuse link voltage.

TIME CURRENT CHARACTERISTIC. The time current characteristic curves for CEF fuses are shown in NHP 300547. The characteristic are valid for all voltage classes of CEF fuses. The curves are given as medium characteristic curves. They show the melting time in relation to the prospective current causing the fuse elements to melt. The curves have a tolerance of +/10% in the current direction. The total operating time for the fuse will be the melting time plus the arcing time from the fuse elements melt until the current is interrupted. For selectivity analysis the interesting curves will be: The minimum melting current characteristic and The total clearing time/current characteristic. Minimum melting characteristic shows the melting characteristic with 0.0% tolerance. That means the minimum prospective current values that can melt the fuse. Total clearing time characteristic shows the maximum melting plus the maximum arcing time for the fuse with tolerance +0.0%. That means: The range between these two curves is the operating area for the actual fuse. In order to get selectivity downstream protection devices must clear a fault before we get an intersection with the minimum melting time curve, and higher order protection devices must not give an intersection with the total clearing time / current characteristic.

CURRENT LIMITATION The effective current limitation can be taken from the curve in NHP 300548. The maximum value of the current which is let through by the fuse depends on the fuse rated current and the prospective current. NHP 300548 shows the peak let through current with Is = Ip*√2*X with X = 1.8.

Example: CEF 12kV 63A Ip = 7 kA (r.m.s.) The Is value is now found as the intersection between the vertical line starting at 3 kA on the xaxis and the corresponding curve for 63A

at: Is = 5 kA (Peak value).
