a population of 21 million. Sri Lanka is a multi-religious and multi-ethic nation which has 70% - Sinhalese, 15% - Tamils, 13% - Muslims and 2% - Others. Literacy rate at 91% is one of the highest in the region.

� Indo-Aryan emigration from India in the 6th century B.C. came to form the largest ethnic group on Sri Lanka today, the Sinhalese. the Sinhalese.
� Ceylon became independent from British rule in 1948 and name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972 at the time the country became a Republic.
� Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, became the world's first female Prime Minister in 1960.
� The incumbent President is Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa who was elected to office in Nov. 2005.

� In 1980’s there was a rapid development of Hydro Power Sector in Sri Lanka.
� Out of the five major Hydro Power Plants built during this time ABB was involved in Kotmale(210MW), Randenigala(140MW) and Rantambe(70MW).

� Besides the company’s contribution to the establishment of the National System Control Centre for Ceylon Electricity Board, ABB has executed several power and industrial Board, ABB has executed several power and industrial projects in the country
� National Control Centre was upgraded in 1999 in order to accommodate Y2K
� Approximately 60 percent of the High Voltage Breaker and 90 percent of High Voltage GIS substation population of the Ceylon Electricity Board network is by ABB
