Gospel Assemblies

We celebrate Gospel Assemblies each Monday in school. As part of this, some pupils are presented with

Values Certificates or Star Pupil Certificates. Historically, parents were invited to join these. Due to

timetabling movements, we paused this during Advent. We forgot to invite you back- whoops!

When we spotted this, we immediately canvassed opinions from pupils and parents. We were surprised to

find out that the majority of responses fed back that assemblies were smoother and had more impact when

kept ‘in house’. We were also shocked to hear the feedback from parents about how much pressure they felt

to attend and the additional demands and stresses this placed on their workload. One parent shared : ‘I hated

having to attend when I worked full time but now that I’m not working , I like it.’

In order to relieve the pressure for all, you will be invited to attend your child’s class assembly.

There is one a year and the dates are set for the whole year. This will enable you to forward plan.

Celebrations in weekly assemblies will be shared via twitter and can then be discussed, shared and enjoyed

as a family after the event.

September School Uniform

Please allow time for an unusual / fashion haircut to have grown out before September return.

Thank you to parents of girls, who have followed the uniform policy, set by governors, regarding haircuts,

perfectly this year.

Parents of boys please talk together about the haircut policy in school and agree, as adults, to follow it. The

amount of times we have heard ‘it was his dad that took him’ as a reason for not following the policy is

unbelievable. Another popular response is: ‘We knew it didn’t follow the rules, but we thought we’d chance

it.’

Parents of boys, the policy clearly states that fashion haircuts or extreme haircuts are not permitted.

Please follow this policy.

Thank you Thank you to children, parents, staff and governors for another

wonderful academic year.

We look forward to welcoming you all back in September.

Goodbye and Good Luck

Today we say goodbye to our brilliant Year 6 pupils. It has been an honour for all staff at the Abbey school

to be part of their faith journey and to watch them develop into the wonderful young people they have

become. We hope they continue to follow in the footsteps of Jesus with their friends, family and Parish and

make the right choice to become the person God has called them to be.

We wish them every success for the future

Summer Reading Challenge from Birmingham Libraries

During the summer holidays, children can take part in a free, local and inclusive reading challenge in libraries in Birmingham.

This years reading challenge will begin on Saturday 13th July and will continue throughout the summer holidays.

Pupils can join the Reading Challenge at any Birmingham library.

Libraries are great places for children to discover reading for pleasure and there is no better time to do this than during the long summer

holidays.

The Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children between the ages of 4 and 11 years old and is inclusive of all children and

families and all stages of reading development.

Children read six or more books of their choice: fiction, non-fiction, joke books, picture books; any books they like as long as they

are borrowed from the library. They talk about them in the library with a member of staff or young volunteer and receive rewards along

the way and a medal and/or certificate when they complete the Challenge.

There is also a mini-challenge for pre-school children so that the whole family can take part.

Libraries stock accessible texts, audio books, dual – language books, picture books and graphic novels.

Every year the Challenge has a new theme. The Summer Reading Challenge 2019 theme is Space Chase, an out-of-this-world adventure

inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Children taking part in the Challenge will join our super space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by

mischievous aliens!

Space Chase will feature bespoke artwork from top children’s illustrator, Adam Stower, and will celebrate adventure, exploration,

reading and fun!

Erdington library have a number of activities during the summer holidays as detailed on the following pages of this newsletter.
