Walking & Cycling
The Abbey Wayfrom Watford to St Albans
The Abbey Way is a 9 mile signed route for walkers and cyclists passing through the Colne Valley between Watford and St Albans. A mixture of traffic free sections and quiet roads links the two towns with Park Street, How Wood, Bricket Wood and Garston. The route is great for commuting avoiding congested roads and passing through parks, woodland and common land instead!
Why not take a leisurely ride to visit St Albans with its Abbey, lake and historic centre? Or, visit Watford to peruse its new market, see a show at one of its theatres, or learn more at the museum. The route forms part of the National Cycle Network for most of its route linking with other tracks including the Ebury Way to Rickmansworth and Alban Way to Hatfield. It also intersects with the recently opened Green Ring in St Albans providing a cycling loop around the town linking routes together.
For a shorter walk or ride take the Abbey Line train one way. Departures are every 45 minutes for most of the day.
Along the route, clear signage will guide you on your way. It
combines imagery from St Albans Abbey (Rose Window and
medieval wall painting) and a Bicycle: ball races and sprockets!
(New signage will be installed during Summer 2015)

You can continue your journey towards Rickmansworth via the traffic-free Ebury Way – a distance of 3½ miles. A free leaflet in this series is available.
The Abbey Way starts and finishes at 14 hectare park which was awarded green flag status in 2014. This followed extensive improvement works including a new playground in 2011. The River Colne runs through the park, and the slopes down to the river makes it popular spot for tobogganing in winter.
Ebury Way
Take coffee and cake beside the pond and enjoy the new and improved ‘top of the town’. Catch one of many events
throughout the year, visit one of the many independent traders or grab a bargain and a bite to eat in the New Watford Market.
Top of the town
Take in a performance at the Colosseum, Pump House or Palace Theatre and shop till you drop at the Intu shopping centre.
Oxhey Park
This historic 190 acre park is a quiet oasis next to the town centre. Walking and cycling routes run through the park to Whippendell Woods and
the Grand Union Canal which has had 5½ miles of towpath resurfaced recently between Croxley and Kings Langley. Heritage Lottery and local
funding is providing a new park hub building with café, community, education facilities and toilets. The pools and park entrances are also
being upgraded, and the historic band stand will also return.
Cassiobury Park
Parts of the common are semi-natural woodland having been there for well over 600 years. There
would have been more open heathland up to a hundred years ago because local people grazed their animals here. More recently the woodland
has gradually recolonized the heathland.
Bricket Wood Common
The River Ver is 15 miles in length flowing from Kensworth Lynch in Bedfordshire to its confluence with the River Colne here in Bricket Wood. At one time it supported over a dozen mills. There was also a thriving watercess industry with the crop directly sown into the river bed.
The River Ver Trail runs along or near to the river throughout its length. For information on the trail, other walks and the river can be found at: www.riverver.co.uk
This walking trail was opened in 2014 and is signed by pink trail markers throughout. If you want to explore the full route, walk the 9 miles and return by train. To shorten or lengthen your your walk you can join it stations along the line. Links from the stations to the Trail are waymarked by green markers.

Green Ring
The Alban Way is a traffic-free trail of approximately 6.5 miles for cyclists and walkers along the former railway line between St Albans and Hatfield. It is an important link in the local
sustainable transport network and forms part of Route 61 of the National Cycle Network. A free leaflet on the route is available (see ‘Walking and Cycling’ section on rear panel).

Verulamium Park is set in 100 acres of beautiful parkland close to the city centre and is a popular attraction throughout the year with wide range of facilities. The
park is named after the Roman City of Verulamium on which it stands. The city walls and outline of the London Gate can still be seen. Verulamium Museum displays
hundreds of remarkable objects that have been excavated from the site. The beautifully preserved 1800 year old mosaic floor can be viewed in The Hypocaust.

This site has attracted pilgrims to Saint Alban’s shrine for many centuries. Following his death 1700 years ago, earlier buildings were replaced by the Norman abbey, which with some later additions, stands here today.
