Tsunami of students at UFVUniversity at 128 per cent of utilization

Alex BUTLERAbbotsford News

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will once again be burst-ing with students this year, with some find-ing themselves on wait lists for enrolment and classes.

The year’s atten-dance projections are looking similar to last year, said Eric Davis, provost and vice-president, academic. Like previous years, that will include more full-time equivalent students than the uni-versity receives fund-ing for, with Davis estimating that more than 16,000 students will pass through UFV campuses this year.

UFV has campus-es and locations in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz, Mission and in Chandigarh, India.

“In terms of space, we are over-capacity as well, especially in Abbotsford where we are at about 128 per cent of our utilization rate for our facilities.”

Davis said that means the university has to plan carefully to “squeeze faculty, staff and students into every space we’ve got.”

He said this often means faculty mem-bers share offices and the university must come up with “creative timetabling” in order to make a workable schedule for the great-est number of students in the space and time available. Most of the programs at UFV have already been filled, though a list remains on the university’s website of the pro-grams still accepting applications.

‘It’s a challenge, more and more every year, trying to meet the in-credible demand here in the Valley, and doing so with fewer dollars from public funding.”

Davis explained that tuition rates are subject to the rate of inflation and cannot be raised to make up funding. Currently, about half of UFV’s funding comes from the government, a quarter from tuition and the other quarter has to be “made up creatively.” Davis said UFV needs to be en-trepreneurial to bring in revenue, while sup-porting the direction and educational pro-grams of the institu-tion.

Of the students from the Fraser Valley who elect to go on to post-secondary edu-cation, about 70 per cent choose UFV, and that popularity and demand pushes the university to accom-modate the needs of Valley students.

Davis said this year the university will build a new student centre – a $15-million project – which will begin construction on Sept. 12.

“This will help al-leviate some of the crunch,” he said, add-ing that the space will provide room for stu-dents and offices.

UFV also received funding for a new

greenhouse and barn to support the agri-cultural programs in

Chilliwack, with con-struction currently un-derway.

Davis said there are also new programs planned to come in the next year, includ-ing a bachelor of arts in economics, a sec-ondary school option in teacher’s education, and starting this fall, a bachelor of arts in global development studies, which Davis said is already in high demand.

For the many stu-dents and staff who travel between UFV campuses, Davis said their lives will be made easier by a new shuttle bus that transports students throughout the day, and the proj-ect will help keep cars off the roads.

“It’s a long time in coming and we hope it’s a great success.”

Staff and students prepare for the school year at the University of the Fraser Valley. The university is once again facing a strain on capacity for students and space.

19,000 students heading back to Abby public school classrooms

Initial enrolment figures show a minor declineKevin MILLSAbbotsford News

Close to 19,000 Abbotsford students are heading back to school today.

School District 34 is projecting a total enrolment of 18,939 students for the 2013-14 year. That represents a decline of 174 students from the previous school year.

School superintendent Kevin Godden said the numbers have been “up a few, down a few” over the past few years, but the change has been “negligible.”

“We start getting soft numbers on the first day of school from all of our schools,” he explained, adding by the end of the first week they will have a “pretty good handle” on the final numbers, especially at the elementary and middle school level.

“Secondary schools are a little bit of a trickier propo-sition given that there are so many variables related to course planning and so on. We don’t get those num-bers until a week after that.”

The district doesn’t need to have final numbers until Sept. 30, when they submit them to the ministry for funding purposes.

With the start of a new school year comes the begin-ning of new initiatives.

“One of our big priorities is around early learning because we know that the biggest impact we can get in terms of kids learning comes as a result of early intervention,” said Godden.

He said the district is attempting to expand and improve the Strong Start parent participation preschool process. Currently, there are 11 such programs in the district’s 26 preschool sites.

“We’re concerned we aren’t reaching all the kids.”He said work has begun with community partners to ex-

pand and improve access for some of the most vulnerable families.

“Anything we can do with kids before they turn the age of

eight is critical.”Another initiative being examined is the possibility of an

outdoor school.Godden said a thorough consultation process will take place

to gauge interest in the idea.“That will likely be an elementary start,” he said to see if a

base of interest can be built. He explained if approved, interested students would see

a significant part of their day take place outdoors. Students would learn the curriculum through the environment, play and working in wooded areas.

“They would deal with the science, math, writing, language, and arts curriculum largely in that outdoor space.”

A third initiative focuses on technology.“Technology is such a huge part of the education

equation and a big part of our students’ lives. And it will help to facilitate learning in a big way,” said Godden.

However, he said the district needs to play a stron-ger role in getting kids to use technology ethically.

“We have a growing issue with kids and how they conduct themselves in online spaces.”

He said the school district is probably the best place to educate youngsters about online etiquette. The district is piloting a number of programs at the middle school level around the use of technology in an appropriate manner.

Finally, Godden said there is a lot of work going on to im-prove trades programs.

“It’s a big focus for the province and for the government that we expand opportunities, in light of the fact that over the course of the next 10 years there’s going to be a million jobs in trades and technologies.”

He said it is the district’s responsibility to prepare stu-dents for that future.

Skate-boarder

from the skyBugs on the wind-

shield, raindrops, dirt... but a skateboarder?

Abbotsford Police re-ceived an unusual call at approximately 5:15 p.m. last Monday.

The woman on the line called in the in-cident “a little bit strangely,” according to Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

The 47-year-old was driving her Volkswagen in the 2800 block of Babich Street when she said a skateboarder “fell out of the sky” and landed on her windshield.

“Upon investiga-tion, we determined that essentially that’s what happened,” said MacDonald.

The 19-year-old skateboarder had set up a jump ramp, hit it at high speed and went airborne. His first point of contact was the woman’s car.

There were only minor injuries in the incident.

According to MacDonald, in addi-tion to picking up the cost of damage to the vehicle, the skate-boarder received a “stern talking to” from police.

Anti-parole petition extendedHearing delay allows victim’s daughter to collect more support

Kevin MILLSAbbotsford News

Rupy Sidhu is frustrated with the parole system

Last month Sidhu, the daughter of murdered Abbotsford woman Baljit Kaur Kondolay, cre-ated an online petition to keep her mother’s killer in jail.

The petition was supposed to close on Aug. 25, so the family could use it as part of its victim impact statement during an October parole hearing.

That hearing has now been post-poned.

What bothers Sidhu is the postpone-ment was requested by her mother’s killer – Sandeep Toor.

“I guess Toor calls the shots and dic-tates when he feels he is ready and requires more time to plan for his hearing,” Sidhu wrote in an email.

“The justice system obviously works for the criminals and not the victims.”

She and her family now has to sit, wait and worry, thinking Toor might get out.

“And there is nothing we can do.”On April 19, 1998, Kondolay, was shot twice

in the head in front of her Langley home.Police arrested three men – Kondolay’s hus-

band Ajit Grewall, his son Sukhjit Grewall and the son’s friend, Toor.

The Grewalls both received life in prison for first degree murder, with no chance of parole for 25 years. Toor was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole for 12 years for the lesser charge of second degree murder.  During his trial, it was established that Toor drove the car that transported the men to and from the crime scene.

While upset about the delay, Sidhu has found one bright spot. She plans to keep the online petition running until the end of October.

To view or sign the petition visit www.change.org/users/justiceforbaljit.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Published and printed by Black Press Limited 34375 Gladys Avenue, Abbotsford

There is a substantial value on time too

Sitting in the Point Roberts border line-up – 30 minutes from start to “have a nice day” – it was obvious there was a quicker way. As we sat in one lane, cars streamed by in the other, hastened by the advantage of having a Nexus pass.

“We should get one,” said my partner in transit. “Make things much quicker.”

I pointed out that in the past 12 years this was only my third time crossing the line.

Based on that, the time to apply for, get interviewed for, and pay for, a Nexus pass would seem to be a little impracti-cal. Especially since my previous two ventures south took far less than 10 minutes in total to clear the border, and that I wasn’t anticipating any great need

to increase my crossing occasions.“But,” she pointed out as we inched

our way towards the wedding anniver-sary party and new beach house debut “now three couples we know have beach houses just across the border (and my son and family have a cabin at Mt. Baker) maybe we want to cross more often.”

So, as we crept towards foreign soil I watched what was happening in the lane adjacent, and noted that when the cars got to the check-in booth, they didn’t go through any quicker than those in my line.

The difference was, there were vastly far few vehicles that had Nexus clear-ance, and so they did not encounter the lengthy waits the rest of us plebeians suffered.

Since time is money, or at least op-portunities lost to do something else, I figured why not?

Better to spend 30 minutes on anything other than sitting in a car, the motor idling, coming up with thoughts of what I could have done with that time.

Perhaps I’ll even renew my interest in

zipping down to Bellingham to buy stuff I don’t need.

Additionally, I’ve even been told (un-confirmed I must note) that a Nexus holder can bring back two bottles of wine, without penalty, on each trip.

If cheap wine isn’t an incentive, well ….Then again, those of you who cross

the border on a regular basis know all of that, and more.

But despite the convenience of a quick-er crossing that Nexus would bring, if I

get around to receiving a pass, the time thing still overrides what I see as cost savings from shopping in the U.S.

I suppose if you have nothing else to do, then a few hours in Bellingham can be worthwhile. On the other hand, and not that I’m that great a homer, every nickel (since we don’t have pennies any more) spent in the U.S. is a nickel not going into our economy.

Yet with ever-increasing taxes and ri-diculously high gasoline prices on this side of the line, can I really blame bud-get-conscious people living only a few miles from economic opportunity for not taking advantage?

All that said, and to avoid what I expect will be unrelenting badgering until I do, I will be applying for a Nexus pass.

Beware, folks with beach houses, I like my martinis shaken not stirred, and if you offer too many you’ll also be provid-ing a bedroom for the night.

Drinking/driving laws in the U.S. are as bad as, or worse than, ours!

No ‘right location’ for proposed housing for Abby homeless

There is no “right location” (for the pro-posed housing for homeless).

I would even be leery of suggesting that a “best location” exists.

There are good lo-cations and bad loca-tions; locations that have good points and bad points, strengths and weaknesses, ad-vantages and draw-backs.

But a “right loca-tion” for Abbotsford Community Services proposed first-stage housing does not exist, and to pursue the right location is to chase a mirage.

The only actual ex-istence the right lo-cation has is in the context of the right location being one anywhere Not In My Back Yard.

“I am not against [insert name of proj-ect under discussion] it is just this is not the ‘right location’ for it,” sounds so much more politically correct and so much less egocen-tric than NIMBY.

It has been re-peatedly stated that Abbotsford has a criti-cal need for the pro-posed housing, and that those who op-

pose the ACS proposal are not against this type of housing in the right location – said  right location being in somebody else’s back-yard.

Which is why, no doubt, it has not been stated where this mythical right loca-tion is.

The truth is that if you choose any loca-tion in Abbotsford for the proposed housing, I can give you 10 solid reasons that it is not the right location.

Abbotsford has a critical need for first stage housing – as-suming the city and citizens want to pur-sue an approach to reducing the number of homeless on the streets that has been demonstrated to be effective.

That’s an assump-tion I freely admit has a high probability of being wrong, given the reaction by city council and citizens to the ACS proposal.

A reaction which provides no evidence of any desire to stop chasing the homeless around Abbotsford until ... what? The homeless fall down a rabbit hole and join Alice in Wonderland?

An outcome which sadly, is no more insane than coun-cil’s chasing of the homeless around Abbotsford year after year after year after

year, in the hope that this time something different will occur and the homeless will disappear?

Gallery 7 Theatre will be holding open auditions for its first production of the 2013/2014 “Spice of Life!” season.

The play is a new adaptation of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Laura Eason and auditions are set for Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The audition is open to all male and female performers ages 16 to 65. Those inter-ested in work-ing behind the scenes in such areas as as-sistant stage management, sound opera-tion, running crew and oth-ers are also in-vited to attend.

Audiences will be invited to rediscover this classic American tale about the love-able scallywag, Tom Sawyer, as he sets out for adventure and manages to break the rules along the way.

All the classic mo-ments from the Twain story are here: the discovery of how to get rid of warts using a dead cat, the murder of Doc Robinson, Tom and Huck’s pirating adventure to Jackson Island, and the infa-mous white-washing incident. Through his exploits, Tom discov-ers the value of pur-pose, and the impor-tance of family, love,

and telling the truth.Gallery 7’s produc-

tion will feature up to six male and two fe-male performers, with most playing multiple roles.

“What better way to launch a new season than with a fun-filled adventure the entire family can enjoy,” said Gallery 7 Theatre’s artistic director, Ken Hildebrandt.

“Though Mark Twain’s comic tale

is familiar to many, this new adapta-tion uses some fun story-tell-ing techniques to create a re-freshing and exciting the-atre experi-ence.”

Directing the show will be John Trottier, who last directed Our Town for Gallery 7.

The show will run Nov. 8-9, 14-16 and 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Nov. 9, 16 and 23 at 2 p.m. All show are at the MEI Auditorium, 4081 Clearbrook Rd.

MCC Festival for World Relief – Fun that makes a difference!

It’s not every day that you can attend a festival and know that you’re feeding a hungry person, building a well, providing an education, or helping someone half way around the world out of a cycle of poverty. When you join Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) for our annual MCC Festival for World Relief, you’re doing exactly that. This annual event supports the relief, development and peace work of MCC, making a differ-ence to those in need in more than 50 countries worldwide.

The MCC Festival for World Relief will be held September 6&7, at the Abbotsford Tradex and has something for everyone: great food, entertain-

ment, craft booths, live and silent auctions, a great children’s area and more.

Folks can enjoy great food all week-end – everything from borscht and sausage on a bun to pizza and samo-sas. The famous Mennonite Quilts will be on display Friday and up for auction on Saturday. Children can take part in their own auction Friday night and enjoy other activities set up just for them all weekend long.

Don’t forget to bring your pennies to the Penny Power Booth and see your change make a change in the world. All contributions to the Penny Power coin drive are matched 4:1 by CIDA, supporting farmers in Burundi as they

seek to to increase their food security.Cycling enthusiasts can take part in

the Pedaling for Hope cyclathon on Saturday. Choose a 20 km route or a 50 km route - something for every ability!

By attending our MCC Festival for World Relief you help MCC to support families as they grow food, get water, send their children to school and fi nd peaceful ways to resolve confl icts and build harmony.

For information visit bc.mcc.org/reliefsales or call MCC at 604 850 6639 or toll free at 1 888 622 6337. Join MCC on 6&7 at the Abbotsford Tradex and help us give where it’s needed most!

We welcome this opportunity to supportthe MCC Festival for World Relief !

For more than 90 years, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has followed Jesus’ call to reach out to those in need and transform lives around the world. Today, with your faithful support, MCC continues to share God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ, responding to ba-sic human needs and working for peace and justice in more than 60 countries around the world. When you participate in the MCC Festival for World Relief, you are supporting people like Grace Kide, shown here with her daughter Molly Ossa, as Grace makes a difference in her community. MCC, together with the church in Sudan, is training women like Kide as a community peace mobilizer in South Sudan as it rebuilds after 21 years of civil war. This is just one example of how your gift helps MCC to respond to families so that they can grow food, get water, send children to school and fi nd peaceful ways to resolve confl icts and build harmony.

PEACE - MCC values justice and peace

MCC is committed to Christ’s call to non-violent peacemaking. This includes loving those who might be considered the enemy. MCC works with local churches and community groups to enable them to better re-spond to the needs within their own communities. Whether overseas or here at home, we consider all of what we do to be peace-building work – feeding the hungry, enabling a child to go to school, supporting people in abusive relationships or explor-ing what it means to be a people of peace. bc.mcc.org/whatwedo/peace

Giving where needed most

MCC RELIEF, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACEMennonite Central Committee is a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, sharing God’s love and compassion

for all in the name of Christ. MCC has three areas of focus: disaster relief, sustainable community development and justice and peacebuilding.

RELIEF – MCC is concrete and hands on

MCC addresses basic human needs such as water, food, and shelter in times of disaster. Overseas, much of this work is done through local groups that are rooted in the local community and have a good sense of what’s needed. Here at home, it also includes volunteering at our Material Resources Centre, making a blanket or assembling the contents of a kit for people in need. bc.mcc.org/getinvolved

DEVELOPMENT – MCC helps people help themselves

A success story for us is when a communi-ty no longer needs us. Over the years MCC has learned that there is not one, simple solution. Issues like poverty, oppression, injustice and climate change must be addressed. We’ve learned that relationships matter and so we work with partner orga-nizations and the church, building bridges that connect people and ideas across cul-tural, political and economic divides. Here are home, that includes serving people with HIV/AIDS, building relationships with our aboriginal neighbours, addressing issues surrounding homelessness and poverty and more. bc.mcc.org/whatwedo

CHANGING THE WORLD - WE STILL WANT YOUR PENNIES!Pedaling for HopeThe government may not be making

pennies anymore but they’re still valuable – especially when they’re donated to our Penny Power project, which matches them 4:1!

This year’s Penny Power project supports a Food-for-Work Reforestation project in Bu-rundi that also works at erosion control and road rehabilitation. This food-security project will help alleviate hunger in a country that has been described as one of the hungriest countries in the world. The project will en-gage local communities in nursery and plan-

tation activities as well as road rehabilitation, improving access to food. It is expected that 12,600 people will benefi t from increased access to food and strengthened food securi-ty each year of this three year project.

So start saving your pennies (and nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies, twoonies… we’ll accept bills and cheques too!) and bring them to the Penny Power Booth at the MCC Festival for World Relief, September 6&7.

Abby chamber continues to recognize the city’s best

Rick Rake, chair of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards wants to ensure that everyone has an oppor-tunity to help identify the best businesses in the city. The Sept. 21 deadline date for nomi-nations for this year’s Abbotsford Business Excellence Awards is fast approaching.

“This is one of the most crucial and excit-ing parts of the pro-cess”, said Rake. “This is where you and I get to say thanks and give a pat on the back when a business, individual or organization has re-ally gone out of their way to demonstrate something special.”

The Abbotsford Business Excellence Awards is now in its 18th year and grows in popularity with each event. All nominees are interviewed by a panel of three judges in each category who then make the deci-sion.

All nominees are rec-ognized and profiled at the awards event.

“It might be a new business that has de-lighted you with their innovation and spirit or an established busi-ness which just keeps getting better. There may be a specific indi-vidual who has gone the extra mile just for you and impressed you

with their skill, knowl-edge, or customer ser-vice. This is your way to acknowledge that superior service in a very meaningful and gratifying manner,” said Rake.

Last year’s event saw more than 100 nomi-nees in the 11 differ-ent award categories and was a record-breaking sell-out. This

year’s event will be held again at Tradex on Wednesday, Nov. 20 and will feature the return of one of the event’s most popular entertainers – Drum Cafe.

Rake said he’s pleased to have Drum Cafe back this year.

“This rhythmic ex-perience engages the entire audience in a journey of personal discovery and partici-pation, culminating in a communal celebra-tion of music and fes-tivity. It will be a fitting way to help celebrate the success of all our nominees that evening. The important part is to act now and get your nominations in before the Sept. 21 deadline.”

To nominate a busi-ness, individual or or-ganization look for a nomination form in the Abbotsford News, email the Abbotsford Chamber at [email protected] or call the Chamber of-fice at 604-850-6880.

Drum Cafe, seen here performing at the Abbotsford Chamber Business Excellence Awards in 2008, will return for the 2013 event in November.

Running rampantMouat-Bateman clash starring elite rushers Irons and

Cummings highlights the start of high school football seasonDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

Pondering his goals for the 2013 high school football season, Robert Bateman Timberwolves running back Ben Cummings places a target squarely on the back of his good buddy

Maleek Irons. “I hope to lead the

province in rushing yards,” Cummings says as he rattles off a laun-dry list of aspirations, which includes winning a B.C. AA title with the T-Wolves.

It’s not lost on Cummings that Irons,

his W.J. Mouat Hawks counterpart, is com-ing off the most prolific rushing season in B.C. high school football his-tory. As a Grade 11, Irons racked up a record 3,304 rush yards and 44 touch-downs in 12 games.

But this Cummings-Irons relationship is fu-

eled by competition, andit’s been that way sincethey first got acquaintedback in peewee foot-ball – Cummings play-ing for the AbbotsfordFalcons and Irons for theChilliwack Giants.

What began as a rival-ry between two of B.C.’sbest running backs intheir age group morphedinto grudging admira-tion and then friend-ship, to the point wherethis past summer, thetwo were training part-ners as they prepped forthe season.

“It’s great,” said Irons,“because we push eachother to do better thanwe can do on our own.”

Irons and Cummingswon’t have to wait longto measure themselvesagainst one another ina game –  the T-Wolveshead across town to facethe Hawks this Friday (7p.m. kickoff, Mouat Field)as the varsity season getsgoing in earnest.

“I’m always impressedwith Abbotsford – howmany great footballplayers we develop at allthe schools,” said RickMacDonald, who co-ordinates the Batemanfootball program.

Mouat’s Maleek Irons (left) and Bateman’sBen Cummings (above) are considered twoof the top running backs in B.C.

Panthers’ new field, Hurricanes’ tough sked among the high schoool football storylines

“(The running back match-up) is interest-ing, because they’re very different backs. Maleek’s a much bigger bruiser, while Benny’s a little shiftier.”

Both Irons and Cummings have their sights set on reeling in scholarships from NCAA teams. Irons has already drawn full-ride offers from the Ohio University Bobcats and the Portland State Vikings, but he’s holding out for an offer from a Pac-12 program.

“He’s got a great com-bination of power and speed,” Hawks coach Denis Kelly said of Irons.

“It’s just a matter of pointing him in the right direction, and he takes care of the rest.”

Cummings is also coming off a stellar season –  despite miss-ing three games with a separated shoulder, he finished second in AA rush yards, racking up 1,354 yards and 15 TDs on just 108 carries.

He attended football camps at Oregon State, Nevada, Yale, Harvard, and Dartmouth this summer, and it’s no acci-dent so many Ivy League schools were on his itin-erary – his academic av-erage is 90 per cent.

Asked what makes Cummings such a spe-cial talent, T-Wolves head coach Alfred Brathwaite doesn’t skimp on superlatives.

“Heart, drive, enthusi-asm, ambition – and the list could go on,” he said. “Anything it takes to be good, he’s doing.”

Both Mouat and Bateman boast plenty of talent beyond the run-ning back position.

The Hawks, ranked No. 4 in AAA, have four play-ers on the preliminary roster for the B.C. U18 team which will par-ticipate in the Football University International Games in San Antonio in January – Irons, Levi Hua (guard/defensive tackle), Jake Firlotte (receiver/de-fensive back) and Clovis Lumeka (fullback/line-backer).

As for the T-Wolves, QB Tanner Friesen, receiver Daniel Mills and Grade 11 RB Austen Zacher give Brathwaite the skill-position ingredients for an explosive offence.

Football season ac-tually had a soft launch last weekend, as  Mouat (taking on Edmonton’s Salisbury Composite in Washington) and the Rick Hansen Hurricanes (facing Windsor

Secondary in North Vancouver) played ex-hibition games. Results were not available ahead of long weekend press deadlines.

The schedule truly revs up this week, and the Mouat-Bateman tilt is just one of a tantalizing trio of local match-ups.

At Abby Senior, the Panthers are set to chris-ten their new all-weath-er turf field against the Holy Cross Crusaders (Friday, 7 p.m. kickoff).

For a program which previously hosted home games across town at Rotary Stadium, having a state-of-the-art field on campus is a thrill.

“It’s exciting for the players,” head coach Jay

Fujimura said of the new facility, which will be known as Panther Field.

This year’s edition of the Panthers is pre-dominantly comprised of Grade 11s, but those youngsters took the Abby Senior Grade 10 team to the AA provin-cial final last year.

QB Jordan Fox, run-ning back Grayson Marquardt and linemen Jason Mann and Jordan Goheen will be among the team’s leaders.

“We can run with most teams in the league, but being young, it’s going to come down to the second half of games,” Fujimura said.

The Hansen Hurricanes, meanwhile,

boast all sorts of po-tential, as evidenced by their No. 4 AA ranking.

They’re wasting no time testing their met-tle –  their home opener Saturday (1:30 p.m. kick-off) is vs. AA No. 1-ranked South Delta, the defend-ing B.C. champion.

Head coach Paul Gill said scheduling power-house opponents is an effort to avoid what be-fell the ’Canes last year, when two teams on their non-conference slate had to forfeit games due to a lack of players.

Leading the way for Hansen will be Grade 12 twins Alex and Brandon Ho. Alex is the starting QB, while Brandon lines up at multiple skill posi-tions on offence. Both also play linebacker.

Gill also expects big things from receiver Zach Toews and line-men Shaiheem Charles-Brown and Harry Kaler.

“I think we have the potential to win a pro-vincial championship,” Gill said. “Sometimes things have to bounce your way, but I would be disappointed if we weren’t on the dance floor at the end.”

Alex Ho is going into his third season as the Hansen Hurricanes’ starting quarterback.

Magee, Francis BerryAug 17, 1919 - Aug 15, 2013

Francis Berry Magee, a long time resident of Abbotsford, passed away on August 15, just 2 days short of his 94th birthday. Frank was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on August 17, 1919. His family moved to the Interior of BC when he was 4, settling in the Salmon Arm area at Glened-en, near Tappen. Frank joined the RCAF in 1942 and served in Bomber Command in heavy Lancasters. Between the fall of 1943 and March 1944, his crew carried out multiple ops over Europe. When ND641 was shot down March 24/25, 1944, Frank was rescued and hidden for months by the courageous men and women of the Dutch and Belgian underground; he later repaid this kindness by sponsoring the emigration to Canada of his primary rescuer, the late Hank Van Geuns. After the war, Frank had a long career in municipal administration in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge BC, retiring in 1984. He and his late wife Vera enjoyed many years at Mill Lake Estates prior to moving to Osoyoos in 2008. Frank is pre-deceased by his son John (1995) and his wife Vera (2012) and is survived by his loving daughters Roena (Ken) and Verna (John). He had a long and honourable life and we will miss him. The wonderful care of the staff at Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos for the last few years is greatly appreciated by the family.
