Research and Readings

The misunderstood Role of the Arts in Human Development Elliot W. Eisner “Through the arts students can learn how to discover not only the

possibilities the world offers but also their own possibilities…”

Art Integration: A Methodology for Teaching Out look on life “…is discriminating according to our experiences, culture,

gender, environment, and so on. Art enables us to see things that are both there and not there; it provides us with an opportunity to imagine and reflect on our lives.”

In social studies, “Artworks are primary resources in the same way that letters, diaries, and other textual sources are.” -Integrating Social Studies and the Visual Arts

“An image can help students deepen their understanding of a person, event or concept… some students may respond more to an image than they would to text on its own.” -Integrating Social Studies and the Visual Arts

Finished Product

This is a girl winning a game of tug of war against three men. Women over come their struggles and can do anything they want. The girl is also wearing bloomers, like the women in the story.

Personal Reflection and Connection to Teaching Philosophy

I believe that students can learn. Art is everywhere and students can express themselves and have their voices heard through artistic work.

Art is a language. Students loved the lesson!! Changes for next time:

More time. More direction for a visual response Create a bulletin board for GI
