³Thinking now about another issue...As you may know, Virginia owns all of the liquor stores in the

state. Do you favor or oppose selling the state-owned ABC liquor stores with the revenues to be

dedicated to transportation projects across the state.´

ABC privatization receives solid support.

³Thinking some more about this issue...Now I would like to read you two statements about privatizing the

ABC liquor stores in Virginia. Please tell me which one comes closest to your own view«´

A significant majority of voters prefer ending the state¶s

monopoly on liquor sales to a gasoline tax.

Other people say the one-time revenue increase will not be

enough to end the long-term transportation problem in the

state. They say that an increase in the gasoline tax is a

better solution, as it taxes those who use the roads the most.

Some people say ending the state government¶s monopoly

on liquor sales will provide a half a billion dollars in newfunding for transportation, all without a tax increase. They

say privatization makes government smaller, ends an

outdated government monopoly, and takes the state out of a

business that can be better handled by the free market.
