It gives me great pleasure as Festival Chair to welcome you to the 28th Aberdour Festival. The Festival grows from year to year and is now a regular in the annual Festival calendar.

Once again we have a number of Hot Ticket events throughout the 10-day Programme and hope that you, your family and your friends will be able to attend as many of them as possible. The annual Festival brings together people from within and outwith the local community to enjoy the party atmosphere for 10 days in Aberdour, Fife’s hidden treasure. And you’ll hear more about hidden treasure if you manage to get along to listen to historian Dr Simon Taylor’s talk about Aberdour’s connections with ancient Egypt – or not! The Egyptian theme will run through the Festival this year from the Crowning and Parade at the start of the week, through the raft race to the Clydebuilt Puppet Show and finishing with excerpts from Verdi’s Aida being played in St Columba’s Church at the end of the week.

Egypt isn’t the only foreign influence on this year’s programme with two events hosted by the Aberdour/Corte Franca Association where you can not only learn more about great Italian wines but also get the chance to taste some. There is also the official twinning signing between Aberdour and Lacroix Falgarde at the Castle on the Friday evening.

As well as all things Egyptian, Italian and French, for the first time ever we’ll have a Festival within a Festival with the HahahAberdour Festival which will run throughout the 10-days including one of the most famous Scottish comedians Fred MacAulay, stand-up comedy workshops, an Open Mic event, and the Funny Girls show.

As part of the Arts Weekend, we are delighted to be hosting an exhibition of work by George Wyllie in celebration of his 90th birthday earlier this year with a selection of his work from across the years on display. We are also pleased to have Alan Grieve, one of Fife’s finest hairdressers with us this year not only to give free haircuts and tidy Festival goers locks but also to record your stories as part of an enjoyable artistic experience.

We appreciate that budgets are tight this year so with that in mind the Committee have agreed to keep the majority of ticket prices at the same level as last year with more FREE events this year than before.

While waiting for the Festival to come round, why not try and complete the Picture competition and general knowledge quiz learning a little bit more about Aberdour than you previously knew.

It goes without saying that there wouldn’t be a Festival without the Committee’s hard work and the help and support of lots of people in the village, so thank you all.

Arts Exhibition In Local Venues

Exhibitions by Local ArtistsFriday 29 July 6.00pm-9.00pm –Saturday 30 July 11.00am-6.00pm –Sunday 31 July 12noon-5.00pm –Various venues across the village –FREE –

This year’s exhibitions by local artists start on Friday evening when you are all invited to join us for the preview night, to view the art and share some refreshments. We welcome back many old friends as well as artists new to the Festival and you are sure to find something to enjoy. The art will be on show in venues throughout the village, each of which will be identified by numbers and balloons.

Also on display – in Artis 33 – will be all the entries from the recent Acrostic Poetry Competition at Aberdour Primary School. Do take the time to see the great work by some of our budding young writers.

Maps/guides will be available from Out of This World from the week before the Festival and from each venue during the exhibitions. Why not start at one of the larger venues such as The Institute or the Church Hall?

A Celebration of George Wyllie MBE

Friday 29 July 6.00pm-9.00pm –Saturday 30 July 11.00am-6.00pm –Sunday 31 July 12noon-5.00pm –The Boathouse, Hawkcraig Point –FREE –

We are delighted to be hosting an exhibition of work by George Wyllie in celebration of his 90th birthday earlier this year. George is a well-known, highly regarded artist (sculpture, installation, performance) and his public art is some of the best known in Scotland, including the running clock at Buchanan Bus station and the giant safety pin in Townhead (in case of emergencies: “you never know when you might need one ...”). Many of us remember his involvement with the Aberdour Festival in the past, in particular his reconstruction of “The Log of The Lord Aberdour” and his inspirational words.

A selection of George’s work from across the years will be on display as well as work by other local artists featuring George. If you are already a fan then you will enjoy the show and if you are new to his work then come and experience something from one of Scotland’s best – you won’t be disappointed.

Alan Grieve – A Haircut for a Story:

Saturday 30 July to Tuesday 2 August –10.30am-4.30pm and at various other times to coincide –

with marquee eventsBy the Festival Marquee –FREE –Age 10+, parental permission required for 15 and under –

Alan Grieve is a Dunfermline-based artist and hairdresser. Alan’s practice as an artist concentrates on Scotland’s renowned tradition of oral culture and the contentious nature of its storytelling underpins his work. Alan endeavours to provide catalysts for new narratives, recording both the storytelling process and the stories themselves. The work Alan produces represents a trawl through Scots history, from myth, popular culture and local anecdote to outright lies and petty gossip.

Alan has recently been involved in the National Theatre of Scotland’s project 99… 100. Developed over a period of seven months, with substantial co-sponsorship from Fife Council and Scottish Power, this has been a huge community project, travelling across Fife in search of people’s stories. Alan’s involvement in the project is as a collector of contemporary stories, tales, truths and lies. The National Theatre of Scotland has built for Alan a fully functioning one man hairdressing salon, which has been set up in locations in Fife and further afield, and people are invited to have their hair cut for the price of a story. With their consent, the sessions are filmed using a camera installed in the set. The recording of the stories provides a picture of people as they are today, as well as the raw material that is used by Alan as the inspiration for a series of artworks to be made into a book, as well as an edited video.

We have invited Alan to continue this process in Aberdour during the week of the Festival. The hairdressing booth will be set up for four days near the Festival Marquee and you are all invited to make a booking or simply come and watch!

Each session will be between 45 minutes and an hour and if you would like a FREE haircut by one of Fife’s finest cutters as well as taking part in an enjoyable artistic experience then it is recommended that you make a booking as soon as possible either by contacting Lewis Banks on 01383 861267, 07786060026 or [email protected] or by going along to the booth and speaking to Alan. In any case, you are all invited to come down and watch Alan at work – blether, cuts and arts, what more could you ask for? New art will be posted in the booth window day by day.

8.30pm-11.00pm Jazz concert –Aberdour Castle Terrace –Tickets: £8.00 –

In 2010, agreement was reached with the village community of Lacroix Falgarde, near Toulouse in South West France, on the principle of a twinning link with Aberdour. The French word for this is “Jumelage”. As part of this year’s Picnic at the Castle, the Festival is proud to host the official signing of a formal Charter of Understanding to encourage and support exchanges in fostering a spirit of understanding and cooperation between the two communities by Arthur Lloyd, Chairman of Aberdour Community Council and Christophe Laverty, Mayor of Lacroix Falgarde. It is to be hoped that this will be the first of many exchanges.

Following the signing, join Swing 2011 – Dick Lee, Roy Percy, John Russell and Stephen Coutts – who love to play the music of the great jazz composers, Django Reinhardt, Count Basie, Fats Waller, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Described by Kenny Mathieson of The Scotsman as ‘Something of an institution in Scottish jazz’ – The four piece Swing 2011 will create a mellow atmosphere in a beautiful setting.
