MINISTER’S MESSAGE

To All at Aberlady Parish Church,

I am writing to say thank you for the lovely lunch which you held for me, the

beautiful cake and the gifts which you gave to me on Sunday 5th January.

The Kirk session photograph will take pride of place on my study wall, as I have

said before not many ministers look forward to Session meetings but I always did

at Aberlady and we certainly had some lively and interesting debates. Which leads me to the model pews! There is a story of a couple who while on holiday

visited a church for the Sunday Service, they always liked to sit close to the front

and so went in and sat down in the second row. They weren't sitting for long be-

fore one of the Elders came up to them and tapping on the front of the pew said,"This pew is saved." To which the husband replied "So are we!"

I will certainly save the two you gave to me! Thank you also for the generous

cheque which I will enjoy choosing something to purchase with and that will be a reminder of my time as Minister of Aberlady.

As you know it was a very difficult decision for me to take to demit but I move on

much blessed by those I have met, ministered to and worked alongside over my time at Aberlady, thankful for the friendships formed along with the encourage-

ment and support I have been given and trusting fully that you are in God's

hands.

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always on your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields, and, until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

With every blessingChristine

Rev Christine M Clark

SESSION CLERK’S MESSAGE

A presentation for Rev Chris-tine Clark took place on 5th January 2014. It was a day I wanted the congregation to give thanks for Christine’s Ministry here in Aberlady.

Since Christine was called to Aberlady as our Minister, she encouraged us to be more active within our community and outwith. We tried various events and services, aimed at both children and adults, to encourage them to become active within the life of our congregation: the Bethany Care van, the Family band, Children and Adult choirs, Moses and the Burning Bush, Joseph and his Technicoloured Coat, all age worship services, Bible studies, Lent studies, Summer Clubs and also Sunday Thirty services which have been led by the Worship Team.

Although it was difficult for Christine to leave us, and for us to accept Christine’s decision, Christine should be positive about what she achieved for us to continue to build on.

We shall miss Christine as our Minister and friend, and wish her well in whatever she decides to do in the future.

The Presbytery of Lothian has appointed Rev John Fraser as Interim Minister and a Locum Minister should be appointed in April. Until then Pulpit Supply has been covered, and Rev Graham Black will cover any Pastoral care.

Church and Tower Committee Update February 2014

The committee would like to thank everyone, both individuals and village groups for their generosity last year which enabled us to reach and exceed our target. A huge variety of events, including afternoon teas, a Bridge Afternoon, retiral collections, making lavender bags, Christmas decorations, tablet, homemade cakes and preserves took place. As a result of these and many other donations, the sum of £31,300 was reached by the end of December 2013, well in excess of our target of £30,000.

In January some generous donations have been received as well as a Gift Aid rebate and the fund now stands at £35,500.

Donations are still very welcome, however large or small

as our target remains £90,000.

Kaye Macaskill(Convener)

Forthcoming events in aid of the Fund:

Sunday 23 February: Concert by Senior Students of Fingers and Thumbs Music in Town House, Haddington. Tickets available £6/£4 (concession) from Fingers and Thumbs (01620 825 433), from Kaye Macaskill, or at the door on the evening.

Sunday 23 March: Songs of Praise with music by the combined choir to be held in Aberlady Church. This will be followed by afternoon tea in the Kirk Stables. Details to follow. Look out for these in the Order of Service and on posters.

General Assembly - 17 to 23 May 2014

Can you Help?

Stewards play a significantly important role to ensure that many of the backup services, in support of the General Assembly, operate in a highly efficient, welcoming and friendly fashion.Throughout the week of the General Assembly some 300 stewards help to cover over 1,000 different duties. Each ‘shift’ generally lasts for about two hours. and it is up to each steward as to how often they wish to help - some only have time to help on one occasion, whereas others travel considerable distances to help as often as they can. With so many tasks to undertake we are always seeking new volunteers and we are still some way short of our required target for 2014.If you think you might like to help us then please get in touch for more information. Your help would be very greatly appreciated.William Mearns, Chief Steward, email: [email protected]

FRED GIFFEN

Fred and his Swedish wife, Gudrun, came to Aberlady from Stockholm with their two young daughters, Margaret and Karin in the sixties, settling in Connor Cottage in the Main Street. Their son Alistair then completed the family. Fred started his own Architectural Practice in Aberlady, combining it with the post of Lecturer in Building Design at Napier University, often employing some of his students to help in the practice in the summer months. Fred worked all hours and was regularly seen from the Main Street working “after hours” at his desk in Connor Cottage. He was very involved in the Main house and the Estate Properties of the Wemyss and March Estate at Gosford for many years. In my research for this tribute, I came across this magazine article- “Much of the credit for the restoration and renovation of old properties in Aberlady must go to Mr A.G.Giffen”. He continued with his practice well beyond a conventional retiring age, enjoying the challenge, as he had so many well kent East Lothian Clients after so many years.

Fred and Gudrun also made time for hosting memorable dinners with the Swedish Aquavit coming second to the Swedish cuisine. Many long lasting village friendships were formed from these dinners, also their involvement with Aberlady Kirk. Fred and Gudrun were constant supporters and attenders of the kirk to the end of their lives.

It is therefore no surprise that Fred served as an elder for over 35 years and fabric convener for many of those years.

FRED GIFFEN contd

There had of course been many fabric conveners preceding Fred with constant unseen and unreported maintenance and repair done by quiet, modest individuals. However during Fred's appointment, the major change of Aberlady Kirk Linking with Gullane occurred with Fred involved in the sale of the Manse in Aberlady and in charge of the design, renovation and rebuild of the Kirk Stables resulting in the attractive Church hall we have today, which is used by church and non church groups

The kirk celebrated its 100th Year of the existing building in 1987 with the installation of the “Crucifixion” stained glass window and also in the millennium year 2000 another window was installed depicting “Christ's teaching in the temple”. These window designs date from the early 1900s by Edward Frampton of London, the original paper designs still retained by the Kirk.

There followed a major restoration of the pipe organ which required substantial fundraising. Fred spent many hours liaising with Sandy Edmondson the organ’s restorer. Fred's considerable artistic skills were also then seen in the fundraising target board on the wall of the Kirk Stables for many months, the pipes gradually meticulously coloured in as funds were raised.

Although retired from his post of Fabric Convener for a few years now, Fred will be much missed at the kirk, not the least by me, who valued his quiet support and listening ear when sharing current kirk fabric matters with him as a kirk elder. I am trying to fill “very large shoes” in following Fred in the fabric care of Aberlady Kirk.

Adult Choir:The combined Aberlady and Gullane Parish Churches Choir goes from strength to strength with numbers now at 40 - still not enough gentlemen however! We do have six very gentlemanly tenors and basses, I hasten to add, but we would welcome some more. So if you know anyone who might be persuaded....! The major focus for the choir this term is a "Songs of Praise" on Sunday 23rd March, 3pm, Aberlady Parish Church, with afternoon tea in the Kirk Stables following the service. This is a fundraising event, by donation, in support of the Aberlady Church Tower Restoration fund, so it is hoped that there will be a large attendance. The music promises to cater for all tastes and is certainly great fun to sing! The Choir will also sing at the Bethany Cream Tea on the afternoon of 4th May, in Gullane Village Hall.

For the Gaels, Iona is I Chaluim Chille – the isle of Colm Cille, an Irish priest and prince who was to become revered as Saint Columba. A tiny island, of typically Hebridean beauty, it holds a unique place in the story of Scotland and kindles the imagination of thousands who journey there each year. Yet it is also where people have lived, worked and worshipped over many centuries. To and from its shores

have come monks and pilgrims, clan chiefs and kings, artists and crafts-men, farmers and fishermen.Of the earliest, we catch only fleeting glimpses now: a few Stone Age flints and tools, unearthed by the plough; a grassy cairn where some Bronze Age mourners laid their dead; fragments of pots, beads and bones which speak of a thriving Iron Age community early in

the first millenium.Later, members of the Columban settlement became skilled in the working of metal, glass, wood and leather. Succeeding generations bequeathed a rich artistic legacy in their intricately carved stones and crosses, fine prayers and poems, and exquisite illuminated manu-scripts. The life of the crofting population down the ages is etched into rigs on the landscape, immortalised in Gaelic placenames and remembered in local lore.Today’s island community follows in the tradition of all those who have gone before them – helping shape Iona’s story in new ways, fostering a variety of creative talents and continuing to welcome visitors from across the globe”.

Let Your Pastor Know

Mrs. Huff is up the miff tree

On a seat fixed good and firm,

And she'd like to tell the pastor

A few things, and make him squirm.

Mrs. Huff was sick abed, sir,

Yes sir, sick abed a week;

And the pastor didn't call, sir,

Never even took a peek.

Wasn't that enough, enough sir,

To provoke a saint to wrath

And to make a Christian pilgrim

Wander from the churchly path?

When I asked her if the doctor

Called to see her, she said, "Sure";

And she looked as if she thought I

Needed some good strong mind cure. Then I asked her how the doctor knew

That sickness laid her low,

And she said that she had called him

On the phone and told him so.

So the doctor called to see her,

But the pastor didn't go

For the doctor knew that she was ill,

And the pastor didn't know.

Now the doctor gets his bill paid

With a nicely written check,

But the pastor - for not knowing,

Simply 'gets it in the neck.'

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Our Minister's moved on and we all wish her well,But what of our future? - well who can tell?

If we band together and work as in teamsThen maybe our crisis won't be bad as it seems.

With God's help and prayers and help from the ChurchWe won't be too long just "left in the lurch".

God'll send us a minister of that I've no doubtWho'll guide us and help us day in and day out.

And as we go forward - and do this we must!!We won't be alone if in Jesus we trust.

THE FOURTEEN STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Spiritual significanceStations of the Cross (or Way of the Cross; in Latin, Via Crucis; also called the Via Dolorosa or Way of Sorrows, or simply, The Way) is a series of artistic representations, very often sculptural, depicting Christ Carrying the Cross to his crucifixion in the final hours (or Passion) of Jesus before he died, and the devotions using that series to commemo-rate the Passion, often moving physically around a set of ‘Stations’. The vast majority of Roman Catholic churches now contain such a series, typically placed at intervals along the side walls of the nave; in most churches these are small plaques with reliefs or paintings. The Stations of the Cross originated in pilgrimages to Jerusalem and nowadays are often incorporated during a guided walking tour of Jerusalem. A desire to reproduce the holy places in other lands seems to have manifested itself at quite an early date. These may perhaps be regarded as the germ from which the Stations afterwards developedThe tradition as chapel devotion began with St. Francis of Assisi and extended throughout the Roman Catholic Church in the medieval period. It is commonly observed in Lutheranism, and amongst the Anglo-Catholic wing of Anglicanism. It may be done at any time, but is most commonly done during the Season of Lent, especially on Good Friday and on Friday evenings during Lent. The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer, through meditating upon the chief scenes of Christ's sufferings and death. It has become one of the most popular devotions for Roman Catholics, and is often performed in a spirit of reparation for the sufferings and insults that Jesus endured during His Passion.

The standard set, from the 17th to 20th centuries, has consisted of 14 pictures or sculptures depicting the following scenes:

1. Jesus is condemned to death2. Jesus carries his cross3. Jesus falls the first time4. Jesus meets his mother5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus7. Jesus falls the second time8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem9. Jesus falls the third time10. Jesus' clothes are taken away11. Crucifixion: Jesus is nailed to the cross12. Jesus dies on the cross13. Jesus is taken down from the cross (Deposition or Lamentation)14. Jesus is laid in the tomb.

Although not traditionally part of the Stations, the Resurrection of Je-sus is sometimes included as a fifteenth station.(Information taken from Wikipedia)

About Heart and Soul 2014

Heart and Soul 2014 takes place on May 18th, 2014 and takes as its theme, “Hands Across The World” which aims to celebrate the life of the church through the lens of its international heritage, relationships and partners. The 2014 event comprises three distinct areas: a varied event and performance programme, a rich seam of congregations showcasing their life, work and witness, and lastly a lively avenue of exhibitors with information and resources focussed on helping congregations in their local and international situations.

There’s a special focus on activities for children and young people and a team from the popular “Spill the Beans” resource material for Sunday School and Junior Churches will be on hand to provide their own Scottish brand of exciting interaction with children. A dedicated marquee for young people will provide a great range of things to do, or just ‘a place to be’

A highlight of the event in recent years has been the massed closing worship service with over 2,000 folks joining together in the early evening sun(!) to worship and praise God in the open air, in the centre of the capital. The Wild Goose Resource Group will feature their unique music-making during the massed worship and the moderator designate will close the service with some reflections on the international theme.

Aberlady Community Association holds a light lunch in the Village Hall called the COMMUNITY CAFF. It takes place on the second Wednesday of each month from 11.45am - 2.00pm. and is always well attended. If you haven’t already attended one or more of these marvellous lunches, why not go along to one during before the end of the year? The helpers are always happy to chat, both in and out of the kitchen. Children welcome!Dates for the Spring diary are: 12th March, 9th April, May 14thFor further information: Ros Richardson

CHURCH FLOWERSIs there a special date or event in your life you wish tomark or remember? No worries. You don’t have to ‘arrange’ the flowers by yourself! Why not contact Mrs Sheena Casely to help or organise the flowers to be put in Aberlady Church on that particular Sunday?

The editor of the magazine for Aberlady Church, Mrs Val Barrie, would welcome any Articles, Letters, Peeps into the Past, Short Stories, Poems, Holiday Hotspots, Jokes and other suggestions to keep the magazine of interest to everyone. Many thanks indeed to the companies and individuals who have agreed to support OUTREACH by advertising in this issue of the magazine. I do hope the adverts are of great interest and helpful to the readers too.

And finally......

ALL MEN / ALL GIRLS

When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would  bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past). For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayer, Kelli would say, 'And all girls.'

This soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this closing. My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, 'Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?'

Her response?

'Because everybody always finish their prayers by saying 'All Men'!'
