ABF Biotech – KISAN Hub
Farmers training on Biofertilizers and
Biopesticides
Date: 27th and 28Th March,2019
Venue ABF Ananthapur
A two-day training programme on 27th and 28th March 2019 for farmers on “Usage of
biofertilizers and biopesticides” was organized by Agri Biotech Foundation (ABF) at ABF Biotech-
KISAN Hub located in Reddipalli, Ananthapur.
Dr.V. Sandhya, Dr.Sk.Z. Ali, Dr. Ravi Sankar Reddy from ABF-Hub, partner institutes
principal investigators Dr. Aziz Qureshi, ICAR -IIOR, Hyderabad and Dr D Muralidhara Rao, SKU,
Anantapur, Technical assistant Mr. Balaraju KVK, Yagantipalle and Ms.Nirmala sciencist,
horticulture department participated in the programme and briefed about the biofertilizers and
biopesticides.
A total of 149 farmers, among which 34 women farmers from Narpala, Reddipali, Neela
Reddipalli and Rotarypuram of Ananthapur district attended the training programme.
The programme started with welcome address by Dr.Sk.Z.Ali describing the activities of
ABF and elaborated on biofertilizer production facilities at ABF, Reddipalli. Dr.V.Sandhya
explained the DBT funded ABF Biotech-KISAN Hub project, its objectives, the benefits to the
farmers on application of bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides, vegetable seedling production and on-
farm production of biopesticides. She emphasized on importance of field level demonstrations by
Hub and mentioned about procuring benefits from hands-on, skill-based trainings which helps in
managing their own growing site. Dr.Ravi Sankar Reddy spoke about the Trichoderma and its
importance, and on-farm production at farmer level. Ms Nirmala addressed the farmers about the
biofortified vegetable seedling production and use of Pseudomonas and PSB. Dr.Aziz from ICAR-
IIOR addressed the farmers on importance of soil testing and water testing. He described about
main deficiencies like organic matter, zinc, boron in soil in the present period and how to rectify
2
them. He focused on training the farmers in soil testing kits and supplying them with the kits as
well as soil health cards.
Dr.Murlidhar Rao partner SKU emphasized on importance of soil microorganisms and
their utilization as biofertilizers and biopesticides. Mr.Balaraju from KVK addressed the farmers
on utilization of biopesticides and biofertilizers in horticulture crops.
After the inauguration practical hands on training session started with power point
presentation and explanation on the types and importance of biofertilizers and biopesticides for
crop improvement in local language (Telugu). A detail explanation about different types of bacteria
and fungi with respect to the morphology, specificity and mode of action for plant growth promotion
and disease management was given. Specific usage of biofertilizers and biopesticides to the
crops and recommended dosage of these bio inputs for reducing chemical inputs was elaborated.
Another lecture included about seed, seedling, soil and spray applications of biofertilizers and bio-
pesticides.
Following this farmer were given hands on skill for the seed treatment, seedling treatment
and soil application, soil drenching, foliar spray of biofertilizers and biopesticides. They actively
participated in the learning programme by practicing the techniques by themselves.
Second training was on mass multiplication of Trichoderma bio pesticide on waste seed
viz., seeds of sorghum and maize. Explanation through slides was given on seed selection to
addition of inoculum followed by detailing various steps in its production. Further explanation was
on the different application methods of mass multiplied Trichoderma bio-pesticide into the fields.
Individual farmer was provided with all the material required for the production for hands-on, skill-
based training on the activity. Each step was followed when the farmer performed the entire
process of production of bio-pesticide viz., from cleaning, boiling, sterilization, inoculation and
incubation. Live demonstration of already grown Trichoderma on maize and sorghum seeds were
exhibited to the them.
Third technology was about vermicomposting, which started with slide presentation on
bedding material to inoculation. A detail description about lifecycle of worms, their maintenance
was given. Also explained about types of agro wastage used in composting, it’s processing,
selection of inoculum (worms), time of inoculation, maintenance and harvesting and packing, cost
of waste and worms followed by price of harvested product.

On day two, training started with preparation of liquid biofertilizer at farmer level. Farmers
were given information on development of liquid biofertilizers using easily available house hold
ingredients at farmer level. Then demos were held. Later, trainees practiced each step from
preparation of media to inoculum addition.
Next training component for the day was growing of biofortified vegetable seedlings in
portrays. Significance of portray method of seedling development, comparison between the
traditional and modern method of seedling development and usage of bio inputs for rising healthy
seedlings in pro trays was explained. This was followed by demonstrations and practical hands
on training on pro tray technology.
Third training component for the second day was on azolla cultivation and its significance
at farm level. Explanation was about the importance of azolla as a super plant in cattle and
livestock feed and in fields. Methodology was elaborated on azolla cultivation by pit, tub method
followed by different methods of azolla production in rice fields. This was followed by preparation
of azolla trays.
Two-day training programme was completed by taking farmers basic information data like
their crops variety, acreage, source of water, etc as well as feedback from farmers on training
activities. The farmers were satisfied in learning the skills practically.
