    About Battinto L. Batts Jr.

    Battinto L. Batts Jr. is a native of Ettrick, Virginia. Professor Batts developed alove for writing at a very early age, using the written word as a form of entertainment andescape from boredom. He embraced writing as a career late in high school, when he

    became the editor of the Matoaca High School newspaper. He won the Best News StoryAward in the 1985 Dow Jones Newspaper Funds Urban Journalism Workshop, aprogram that exposed minority high school students to the world of journalism.

    Battinto enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he majored inMass Communications with a concentration in newspapers. He also holds a master of artsin media management from Norfolk State University, and is completing his doctorate inhigher education management at Hampton University. Professor Batts research focuseson social media in higher education.

    Professor Batts had a 20-year career in journalism, working at five newspapers(Richmond Times-Dispatch, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Daily Press, Virginian-Pilot,Tampa Bay Times) as a reporter or editor. He also worked in circulation marketing at The

    Virginian-Pilot, where he oversaw the Newspapers in Education program and ePilot.Battinto began teaching journalism courses at Hampton University in 2001, and joinedthe faculty full time in 2007. He served as an assistant professor in the Scripps HowardSchool of Journalism and Communications for three years before being appointed thedirector of the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute.
