BOORT FLOOD PLAN MEETING 9th MARCH

The Boort Development Committee is organising a community meeting to discuss and prepare a flood plan for Boort and surrounding districts. The meeting, to be held in the Memorial Hall 7:30pm Wednesday 9 March, will review the recent flood and discuss plans for future flood prevention. Guest speaker will be Graham Hall from North Central Catchment Management Authority (NCCMA), regarded as a flood and water course guru for northern Victoria, who spoke at a community meeting in Boort during the January flood. Boort’s Loddon Shire Councillor Neil Beattie and engineer Barry Kennedy will give an overview of what happened during the January flood - what water went where, and why - and present plans for better managing storm water and flood waters in the future, based on contour maps to be presented at the meeting. At it's December meeting, the Boort Development Committee began discussing a flood plan for Boort, linking it with a flood plan for Durham Ox, Pyramid Hill and Serpentine. As we all know, a few weeks later, we had a 1 in a 100 year flood. The committee is continuing the process, with this community meeting. Development Committee President Jim Nolan said that the 9 March meeting will look at what lessons can be learned from the January flood, and how they could be incorporated into a future flood plan, but said the meeting is not intended as a blame session. For further information please contact President Jim Nolan on 5455 2717 or Secretary Sue Forster on 0409 935 289

BOUNCE BACK strategy for building resilience;

B – Bad times don’t last O – Other people can help if you talk to them U – Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset N – Nobody is perfect, not you and not others C – Concentrate on the positives, no matter how small E – Everybody experiences sadness, failure, and rejection, at some time – not just you! B – Blame fairly: how much was due to you, to others, or just bad luck? A – Accept things can’t change: try change what you can C – Catastrophising & exaggerate your worries. Don’t believe the worst! K – Keep things in perspective; its only one part of your life.

Some History of the old Furphy Tanks The Furphy family of Shepparton manufactured water tanks. They were a very devout Methodist family, and wanted to get the ‘wowser’ message out to their customers without losing any business because of their beliefs, so they had a sobriety message in Pit-man’s Shorthand inscribed into the end of the tanks. The tanks were also shipped to Gallipoli where they provided drinking water for the soldiers and horses. There were two models of this type. The earliest has a stork carrying a baby, and underneath in shorthand is written

“Produce, Populate, or Perish.” The sobriety message on this tank translates as

“Water is a gift from God but beer is a concoction of the devil.

Don’t drink beer.”

A later Furphy tank did not have the stork, but carried the following message in Pitman’s Shorthand -

“Water is a gift from God but beer and whisky are a concoction of the devil.

Come and have a drink of water.” The motto on all of the tanks written in English is

“Good better best, Never let is rest

Until your good is better And your better best.”

Boort District School King Street Fete The Boort District School is once again holding its Fete on Friday 1st April from 4.00pm at the King Street Campus. The Fete is always a great family event showcasing the wonderful attributes of the school and this year promises to be a fun, low cost evening. Each of the grades is currently organising an activity to run on the day. Some of the exciting activities to take part in include face painting, badge making, jewellery making, hair colouring, knock em down, and guess the name of the teddy. There will also be an art and craft stall, cake and produce stall, Hot Wheels car racing, and a sand pit dig. For the more active there is a Jumping Castle, Merry-Go-Round and a Climbing Wall.

The Fete will also include a second hand book and small goods stall. If you have any books that you would like to donate to this stall please drop them into the office before the fete or come along and pick up a bargain of your own. Great music is provided throughout the evening by students and staff from the Malone Street campus.

There will be a BBQ and baked potatoes so come and join us for a snag and a chat. There will be plenty of other refreshments to buy including mini pavs, fairy floss, slushies and drinks or drop into the Coffee Shop for a great coffee, milkshake or muffin and view some of the student’s art work.

There are always fantastic items donated by local businesses to bid on at either the silent auction or join in the fun and have a go at bidding in the Goods and Services Auction. It is wonderful that so many of our local businesses help to make this auction such a success and we hope that locals will support these businesses that have generously supported the school. Keep an eye out for the display in Boort Newsagency listing the items to be auctioned.

Why not spend $2 and be in with a chance to win one of many prizes worth nearly $2000. The 1st prize is 2 night’s accommodation for 4 in Melbourne and includes family passes to a number of tourist attractions and fuel supplied by Lakeside Cafe. All other prizes are to tourist attractions within a two hours drive with most being for a family to share. Full details of the prizes will be on display at Boort Newsagency. Tickets can be bought from school family members, BoortDistrict School, or at the Fete on the evening. Winners will be drawn on the evening. If you would like more information about the Fete or would like to donate items to the auction, or one of the stalls please contact the Boort District School. We hope you can join in the fun and make the fete a huge success. PDF Created with deskPDF PDF Writer - Trial :: http://www.docudesk.com

Boort Hockey Club

The Hockey Club is kicking into action for the forthcoming season. Kathy Velleley has taken on the role of President, with Brenton Henderson and Kelly Henderson continuing in the roles of Secretary and Treasurer. In the ‘off season’, Jacqui Verley has been co-ordinating the construction of a new shed on the north side of the hockey ground. It is hoped that this will be built in time for the commencement of the 2011 season, and will provide storage and shelter for the Hockey Club and other community groups. The current shed is looking for a new home. If you are interested in placing a tender contact Kathy or Brenton. Roz Lanyon and Jacqui Verley will continue to coach the Minkey in 2011 with children from Grade 1 upwards welcome to join in. Craig Slatter and Adrian Grogan will take charge of the Under 13s and Paul Gill will con-tinue his great work with the Underage team. Kathy Velleley is to coach the Seniors and has already rallied players to begin fitness training on Tuesdays from 22 February. As part of the quest to develop fitness for the forthcoming season, the Hockey Club will be running a small “FUN TRIATHLON” on Sunday 13 March beginning at 9:00 am. We encourage those from the other sporting clubs plus the wider community to join in the fun with the cost for Juniors (under 15) $5.00 with adult entry fee $10.00. A short or long course is available. The generous tomato growers that have supported our club for many years have been greatly impacted upon by the recent floods and our thoughts go out to those growers. In 2011 we have managed to secure some other quality tomatoes to ensure our service of providing tomatoes to the local community can continue. Please phone your orders ASAP through to Mi-chelle Holland (54 947335) or Roslyn Lanyon (54552202) with delivery to be on Sunday 6th March. Cost remains at $15.00 per 10 kg box. It should be a great year for the Hockey, Football and Netball Clubs in 2011.

The Boort Pre-School have been lucky enough to do the catering for the RACV "Fly the Flag Tour" on March 27th. As we are catering for a large number of people we are seeking anyone who may have fruit trees in season, who are willing to donate pieces of fruit for this event. Also, if anyone has tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots or lettuces in abundance we would love to
