Ballyboden St Enda’ s• Congratulations to Ballyboden’ s Senior Hurling team who were back-to-back winners of the Dublin senior Hurling Championsips

(‘ 07/’ 08) and Lenister Senior Hurling Finalists in 2008.• Congratulations to Ballyboden’ s Ladies Football Team who have won nine Dublin

Championships on the trot; five Leinster Championships and two All Ireland Finals.• Finally to the Camogie team, who won the Leinster Final in 2008

To mark these achievements I arranged for a Civic reception to be held in County Hall in February. My thanks to Council officials and the Mayor for facilitating this reception.

Knocklyon UtdI am delighted that the Council has rowed back on its decision to remove a playing pitch from use by Knocklyon Utd FC at Ballycullen. I have strongly supported the club in this. The decision by the Council to grant temporary use of a second pitch at Ballycullen is just a first step as far as I am concerned. The next stepis to ensure that Knocklyon Utd secures permanent use of a second full pitch at Ballycullen and I will continue

to do my best to ensure that this happens.

(John Lahart with the captains of Ballyboden St Enda’s successful Senior Hurlers, Camogie and Ladies Football Teams, who were hosted to a Civic reception in County Hall to mark their achievements. The reception was initiated following a motion by John Lahart at Council.)

Giddy Studios, Rathfarnham’s potterypainting studio, came to nationalprominence recently when it featuredrecently on RTE’s Tubridy Tonight. The show’sblind date couple went to Giddy Studios topaint their interpretation of each other onpottery plates.

“The guys were absolutely brilliant and reallygot into it’, according to owner Helena Dilleen.“It’s clear that pottery painting really is suitableto all ages and personalities. Traditionally itwould have been seen as a kids activity only butI think the environment has an awful lot to dowith who it appeals to’, says Helena.

Helena went on to say “The studio is bright, beautiful and to quote a giddy customer, ‘itgives you a lift!’. There are lots of adults whoare really interested in the idea as an alternativeto going to the pub or out for a pizza. The bigquestion for us was ‘do you need to becreative?’. It can be as easy or as intricate as youwish and we have pieces and design ideas tosuit everyone. No matter what people do theirpieces come out brilliantly after being glazedand fired. And it’s something they’ll haveforever”.

When chatting to Helena she was waiting on agroup of 14 adults to arrive for a girls night outand the previous Thursday the studio servedover thirty pottery painters. Giddy has also anumber of corporate groups for a bit of ‘teambuilding’, which has gone down a storm.

Opening hours in the evening are byappointment, so call in advance to book.Everyone can bring their own tipple - beer, wine, bubbles.

Helena told me that Hen painting parties aregoing down brilliantly, with some groupsdesigning the ‘bride-to-be’ dinner service andsignature plates for their wedding day - thecreation of giddy heirlooms!

ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS

www.familyfun.ieIreland’s Family Leisure & Entertainment Website

Paul Tonge (Cabinteely) and Carl Keenan(Knocklyon) are two childhood friends who haverecently set up a website called Familyfun.ie.

Both are married with young children who identified a gap in the market for a family leisure andentertainment website that makes it easy for parentsof young kids (mainly aged 3 to 12 yrs ) to explorethe many activities available to them in Ireland. “We found that whilst there are lots of websites onthe market covering elements of what we have on

Familyfun.ie, there was an opportunity to createsomething that was comprehensive, truly relevant incontent, and easy to navigate.” Following months ofresearch on websites around the world, lots of latenight debate and a further 9 months developmentand more late nights, Familyfun.ie went live midOctober ‘08.

According to Carl, “The feedback to date has beenfantastic! It’s free and parents love the idea of beingable to find everything in one site from viewing clipsof childrens movie releases to exploring family venuesto party planning ideas. We have lots of plans for thefuture to enhance the site and its content, so thisreally is just the beginning.”

“We want the FamilyFun.ie site to become a valuedand regularly used resource for parents whenplanning their leisure time with their kids andhopefully your readers will give it a try and like whatthey find!”

Round the Garden in MarchMarch is a guessing game in the garden. Willit warm up soon? Will it stay warm? Will therains start/stop? About the only thing we cancount on is that March too shall pass. So goahead and push the envelope, but keep therow covers handy.

Everyone should have their seeds started, theirtrees and shrubs pruned and their tools ready togo. After that, the most important thing is tohave patience. It’s tempting to take advantage ofwarm days, but spring gets the last word in thegarden. Here are some March gardening tips totake with a spoonful of judgement.

· Start feeding houseplants again.

Repot, if necessary.

· Avoid walking on wet soil in the garden

· Hardy annuals can go out even before last

expected frost

· Wait until the soil warms and dries before

planting summer bulbs, tubers,etc.

· Perennial vegetables and fruits can be

planted once danger of frost has

passed and the ground is workable

· Prune roses before the buds break

· Plant shrubs when the ground warms

ABOUT COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH THERAPY

Stress is a Fact of LIfe!

Stress is a fact of life. We need it. Stressaffects us one way or another whether welike it or not. But, instead of stresscontrolling us, we can control stress andthe negative effects it has on us.

We can’t control everything that happens eitherto ourselves or our loved ones so it’s vitallyimportant that we manage ourselves, our re-actions to what happens and recognising thesigns and symptoms of stress can be the start inhelping us to take back control.

Stress in small doses and in the short time canbe positive for us, it can gives us drive, focus anddetermination. It’s when stress continues into thelong term, gradually creeping up on usbecoming constant, that the effects start toshow. It can be very subtle, but stress is a silentkiller and has been attributed to the cause orcontributory factor in many diseases.

So what can we do?Firstly, we need to know thesigns, we can’t change anything if we’re noteven aware of it. Signs and symptoms are wideranging and can be misinterpreted. Everyone isdifferent and will be affected differently.

Our body is a great messenger, we just need tobe prepared to listen to what it’s telling us.When we experience pain it’s our body’s way oftelling us to take note. It’s far too easy to justbrush aches and pains off and say it’s just stress, but we need to heed to signs that our body is illat ease.

Signs such as headaches, migraine, I.B.S.(irritable bowel syndrome),indigestion, eczema, asthma, panic attacks, fear and phobias, M.E.chronic tiredness, depression, and many otherconditions far too many to list, are caused orworsened by stress.

I have many years experience working with clients on a one-to-one basis, working withgroups and teaching students of complementaryhealth and through my work in Hypnotherapy &Psychotherapy, Shiatsu, Bio-Energy Healing andRelaxation and Stress Management offers theclient, student and group a choice of treatmentsbest suited to them and their needs.

My approach is to help the client deal with theimmediate symptoms of stress and teachingthem different skills so the client themselves goesaway easily able to manage themselves, theirstress, their life more effectively.

Avoid A Holy Expense!

We all know that Holy Communions andConfirmations can turn into expensiveevents – money worries can stop youenjoying this special day. How can youavoid this?

Make a list of all you might need to buy . Try to estimate the cost of each item – berealistic – check the prices.

Try to find ways to keep these costs to aminimum – would you consider using anoutfit from a family member? Check whichshops have sales of last season’s designs.

Add up the total cost. Ask yourself is itrealistic. Check if you might be eligible forsome help through a Communion / Confirmation Grant from your local CWO(Health Board).

Once you’ve finally agreed on the cost, consider ways you might pay for it.

Calculate how many weeks there arebetween now and when you need to buy – how much will you need to saveeach week to cover the cost?

If you feel you have no option other thanto borrow, please consider how much youcan afford to repay each week. Considerhow long you will need to repay, then shoparound for the best rate – look for thelowest APR - this is the actual cost ofborrowing – it appears as a percentage (%)

Only borrow the amount you actuallyneed. If you are still in doubt about yourbudget contact your local MABS office or see www.mabs.ie

It’s a special day – make sure you are left with lots of memories – not lots of worries!

ABOUT THE HOME ENERGY SAVING GRANT SCHEME

Do Your Bit to Reduce Global Warming!

The government recently announcedinitial details of a €100 million grantscheme designed to assist homeownersmaking their homes more energyefficient. The obvious benefit to availingof this scheme is a warmer home, costing less money to heat, and having abetter BER rating.

Dry-lining walls has the additional benefitof giving a new surface ready for painting. If a home also needs rewiring, dry-liningcan cover up many of the new wires, reducing the amount of dust and costinvolved.

The grant scheme is open to all owners ofexisting homes in the state, built before2006. Owners of multiple properties maymake a separate application for eachproperty. Fixed grants will be availabletowards reimbursing some of the cost ofthe following measures:

For a homeowner to qualify for the €200BER grant they must undertake a BERbefore commencing any measures AND asubsequent BER once they are completed. The other grants may still be obtained evenif a BER has not been done. A BER isrequired before a property can be offeredfor sale or rental. It’s valid for 10 years fromthe date of issue. With the exception of theinitial BER assessment, approval must be

obtained BEFORE making any purchases, or any work is done.

Work commenced or completed beforegrant approval is obtained is not eligiblefor grant assistance. The initial grantapplication must be for at least €500(excluding BER support). The works MUSTbe carried out by a contractor registeredwith SEI. SEI is currently invitingcontractors to register with them. Oncethis is done the scheme will be open forapplications. In the meantime you can start to thinkabout the type of work you might like todo. Getting a “Before” BER for your homeshould help identify what would be mosthelpful. A BER can only be done by aregistered BER assessor. You will find myname on the list of registered assessorsavailable on the SEI website:www.sei.ie/BER. In instances of financialdifficulty I would be happy to provide areduced cost service.Grants are only payable when measures are completed in full compliance with thescheme’s Terms and Conditions, and thecontractor has been paid by thehomeowner.

The steps involved in getting a grantpayment are: APPLICATION -> APPROVAL ->MEASURES COMPLETED ->CONTRACTOR PAID & RECEIPT ISSUED->GRANT CLAIMED

The grant will not reimburse more than theactual cost of the qualifying works. Bewareof entering into high interest creditarrangements to finance these works aspayment of grants may be delayed byadministrative issues.

If you wish to register your interest inthe scheme then simply email:[email protected] phone 1850 927 000. Registeredhomeowners will be notified as soon asthe scheme is opened for applications.More detailed information may beobtained from: www.sei.ie/hes, or by ringing me at 087-279 9131.

Did you know that the Irish Laurel andHardy Society have their headquarters inDublin 16? This year, we celebrate our10th birthday and have an enthusiasticmembership of over 60 who meetregularly and watch movies and have a laugh.

“Hardy’s Bar” in the Royal Marine Hotel inDun Laoghaire is the venue for ourgettogethers. Stan & Ollie stayed there in1953 when they visited Dublin to play at TheOlympia Theatre. Oliver Hardy was oftenseen in the bar of the hotel and following therecent refurbishment, they honoured theirfamous past guest by naming the new barafter him.

Jitterbugs is run by me, Liam Muldowney. Iam an ordinary 39 year old, well almostordinary, dad of 4.5 children (one on theway). I have the largest collection of L&Hbooks in the British Isles and collect all sortsof other related memorabilia includingoriginal studio scripts, autographs and filmsetc. I've met Stan Laurels' great-granddaughter and spoken to his daughterLois, who still lives in Hollywood. Our club is part of the worldwide ‘Sons ofthe Desert’ which is the name given to the

club by Stan Laurel who wanted a fun thingrather than a fan club. Each Chapter of theSons is named after one of their 106 moviesand we are the ‘Jitterbugs Tent’ named afterthe 1942 film of the same name.

Our members come from all walks of life andrange in age from 7 to 88 years old. Theyounger members are enthralled by theantics of these two funny men acting likechildren. Our oldest member never misses ameeting - he loves the old Hollywood moviesand is a great character. A convention is held every two years, withDublin hosting the 8th European Conventionlast year. Over 100 delegates from all overthe world came for a weekend of fun andtrivia swapping. We had three themed nights(all based around Stan and Ollie), visited theOlympia Theatre and sang Laurel and Hardysongs en route on the LUAS!

Our meetings are free to attend and all weask is that you smile, laugh and enjoy. Wepublish a newsletter at irregular intervals andcover our costs with a €10 charge. Fulldetails of membership and meetings are onour website www.laurelandhardy.ie

One True Voice! – Local Voice Coach Timara Galassi

Rathfarnham resident Timara Galassi has been aprofessional vocal coach, musician and speechcoach for over twenty years. She has successfullydeveloped and trained professionals andamateurs, using a unique and thought provokingapproach.

According to Timara “you don’t have to beincredibly talented to sing well. Everyone can sing tosome degree and with the approach I take, improvement can be recognised almostimmediately. Not only is singing beneficial for easingstress, it is also a great therapy for gainingconfidence and building self esteem.”

But is voice coaching useful outside of the singingprofession?“Absolutely! We use our voices every day and mostpeople speak or sing from their mid chest area orthroat, causing vocal tension and strain. As humanbeings, one of our gifts is that of communicationand natural expression. You may be surprised athow many people have a limited ability in usingtheir voice with ease.”

Timara’s coaching technique works for those whoalso wish to become fluent in public speaking. She

has noticed over the years that most people do notbreathe properly.

“Without breath we cannot live, so restrictedbreathing due to tension, nerves or poor confidencewill have huge impact on the quality of your voice.Diaphragmatic breathing is the correct way tobreathe. We have become conditioned over theyears and get accustomed to bad habits and overtime we lose the natural sound quality of ouroriginal voice.” “In this fast paced world, speaking and singing, have taken on new meaning. Most people willadmit that singing or speaking in public wouldembarrass them or make them feel veryuncomfortable and nervous. It is so important toexpress one-self effortlessly and naturally”. TimaraexplainedTimara concluded “Working through music, selfawareness and vocal technique can improve thequality of your voice dramatically. As the eyes arethe windows of the soul, the voice is most certainlythe sound.”

ABOUT LIFE COACHING

What Do You Want Out Of 2009?

At the start of 2009 we had goodintentions, but have they lasted? The urgefor change often doesn’t last long enoughfor you to follow through – the motivationseems to come and go. In the short-term,it’s easier for your life to remain the same, rather than to do anything about it.

But what about the long-term? How manytimes have had the urge to change, but donenothing about it? How can you ensure thatyou make the change and stick to it?

One way you can do this is employ theservices of a personal coach. But what is apersonal coach?

A personal coach is very similar to a sport’scoach. The latter coaches their athletes toimprove, change, and develop so that theycan become the best athletes they can be. Inan similar vain, a personal coach works inpartnership with you, the client, to enable youto improve, change and develop variousaspects of your life.

Coaching works as a partnership. Duringsessions you will focus on the beliefs andvalues that are personal to you. Your coachwill be there to guide, question and help youget clarity and perspective. Together you willexamine different strategies or solutions thatyou can implement to make changes in yourlife.

Your coach is there to provide you with thetime, space, structure and support you needto help you to decide what you want, whyyou want it and how you can achieve it.

People use personal coaching for manyreasons, perhaps to:

Achieve a life long goal or ambitionReduce stress in their livesGet a better work/life balanceChange or improve their careerIncrease their confidence or self-esteem.

By working with a personal coach, you will:

Achieve a clearer focus on what you want, why you want it and how you can get it.Bridge the gap between where you are nowand where you would like to be.Get the confidence, support and motivationto achieve your goals and make a lastingchange to your life.

Personal Coaching will help you identifythe changes you want to make in 2009 andensure that you stick to them.

'Leadership Matters' - Ecumenical Lent Series of Public talks in Rathfarnham

Every year during Lent, the group ofparishes in Rathfarnham holds a series ofpublic talks to offer our community anopportunity to reflect on serious issues.

This year, we have chosen the theme ofleadership. Realising that we need leaders inall spheres of life, we decided to give eachevening a particular focus. Familytherapist, Owen Connolly will speak aboutthe role of parents while Karlin Lillington, technology journalist with the Irish Times, willlook at who leads and who follows theInternet generation.

Andrew McNeile, consultant to the Church of Ireland House ofBishops will ask whether anybody is listeningto the churches while Commandant, JimGavin, coach to the Dublin under 21s GAAteam, will look at the influence of sport in ourcommunities.

On March 19th, we will look at leadership orthe lack of it in business and finance.Professor Ray Kinsella from UCD’s MichaelSmurfit Graduate School of Business will askhow we can rebuild trust in our bankingsystems. Redmond Donoghue, chairman ofFailte Ireland will ask what makes inspiredleaders.

ABOUT STYLE

Spring Clean Your Wardrobe

With spring just around the corner (yes Iknow we had snow this year and it’s still verycold) it’s good to look ahead in anticipationof longer nights and brighter days. Alongwith realising that the windows really doneed to be cleaned it’s good to take a longlook in the wardrobe and decide to do a clearout. Where to start? How to get organised?

Begin by emptying the clothes onto your bedand arrange in piles of trousers, skirts, jacketsetc. List what you have and then review if youhave too many of one thing and not enough ofanother. For instance – 8 pairs of trousers andthey’re all black!

Are you holding onto things because they needminor alterations or specialist treatments? Nowis a good time to deal with them, taking uphems, sewing on buttons or arranging to dropitems into the dry cleaners.

I would recommend replacing wire hangers withwooden or plastic rigid ones that support yourclothes properly, as over time wire hangers willfail to do this. The best hangers for knitwear arepadded fabric ones. All knitwear should becleaned before being stored as moths loveclothes that are not perfectly fresh!Once you have your wardrobe emptied, give it aquick wipe down or vacuum and you’re set toarrange it in a more accessible way.

Decide whether to rearrange your clothes backin your wardrobe by category or outfit i.e. allblouses together in one area or trousers, blouseand jacket all on one hanger for easier selectionas this can really save you time in the morningrush. If you keep your shoes in your wardrobe itmay be worthwhile investing in clear shoeboxes. These allow you to identify your shoeseasily. Alternatively long hanging shoe holderscan allow for the storage of about a dozen pairs

in an easy to reach place. It’s also a really goodidea to use shoe-trees for all shoes as these helpthem keep their shape and prolongs their life.Scented wooden balls for the inside of the shoeswill also keep them smelling fresh as well asdiscouraging moths.

Should you decide that you’re not really wearingmost of the clothes you’ve just taken out of yourwardrobe then help is at hand to identify whythat is. Getting the most out of your wardrobeand discovering new ways to create outfits usingthe clothes you already own is my speciality. It is even more important nowadays to ensurethat anything we spend on new clothes is foritems that work and will provide good value ona “cost per wear” basis. In addition to doingwardrobe workouts I also offer a personalshopping service.

With Mother’s day on the horizon and Easterfollowing closely behind perhaps a gift voucherwould be welcomed by someone you love? So,have fun with that therapeutic wardrobe clearout, ladies!

ABOUT STARTING OR GROWING A BUSINESS

The South Dublin County Enterprise Board

These are challenging times for business –many small companies are hard pressed forcash and tough decisions are being madeon a daily basis by owner managers allover the county. South Dublin CountyEnterprise Board has been helping peoplestart up and grow business in the countysince 1993 - over 15 years experience ofdiverse economic conditions impacting onsmall enterprise. During that time theBoard has helped many entrepreneurs takean idea and nurture it growing it into asolid business and creating valuableemployment and wealth in the county.

Unfortunately the past year has not been easy. Theemployment gains of 2007 in businesses supportedby South Dublin County Enterprise Board werenegated by job losses in 2008, bringing totalemployment among Enterprise Board clients backto almost exactly the December 2006 levels. Commenting on the losses, Chief Executive LomanO’Byrne said “This has been a very tough year forour clients and their staff.
