St.GeorgeisthepatronsaintofEngland,whoseemblem,aredcrossonawhitebackground,istheflagofEngland.TheflagoftheAnglicanChurchofCanadaconsistsoftheredcrossofSt.George,onawhitebackground,withfourgreenmapleleavesinthequarterstosymbolizethefourecclesiasticalprovinces.Theyaregreentoindicate"ayouthfulandvigorouschurchandnation".

Oneofthebest-knownstoriesaboutSaintGeorgeishisfightwithadragon.Butitispuremyththatheeverfoughtadragon,andsomewhatunlikelythat

heeveractuallyvisitedEngland.Despitethis,St.Georgeisknownthroughouttheworldasthedragon-slayingpatronsaintofEngland.Notethatdragonswerethoughttobedevilswhenthestoryoriginated.

TherearemanyversionsofthestoryofSt.Georgeslayingthedragon,butmostagreethat:• Atownwasterrorizedbyadragon• Ayoungprincesswasofferedasasacrificetothedragon• Georgeslayedthedragonandrescuedtheprincess.

Asaresult,SaintGeorgeispopularlyidentifiedwithidealsofhonour,braveryandgallantry,butactuallyverylittleisknownabouttheman.Mostagreethathe:

• WasborninEasternTurkey(inCappadocia)in270A.D.• BecameaRomansoldierattheageof17andsoonbecamerenownedforhisbravery• ProtestedagainstRome'spersecutionofChristians• Wasimprisonedandtortured,butstayedtruetohisfaith• WasbeheadedatLyddainPalestineinApril303.

St.Georgeisalsothepatronsaintofscouts,soldiers,archers,cavalryandchivalry,severalothercountries,farmersandfieldworkers,ridersandsaddlers,andhehelpsthosesufferingfromleprosy,plagueandsyphilis.

TheKing'sOwnCalgaryRegimenttracesitsorigintothe103rdRegiment,CalgaryRiflesraisedApril10,1910atCalgary,Alberta.TheregimentremainedaNon-PermanentActiveMilitiaunitduringthe1914-1918Warandraisedthe10th,50th,56th,82ndand137thBattalions,CEFbetween1914and1919.TheKing'sOwniscurrentlytaskedasareconnaissanceunitandispreparedtoassistwithdomesticoperations(naturalandmanmadedisasters,aidtocivilpower,orsecurity)withinCanada,aswellasforoverseasoperations.SoldiersfromtheKing'sOwnhaveservedwithandaredeployedonnumerousUnitedNationsandNATOoperations.ThechapelatSt.Stephen’swaserectedinmemoryofmembersoftheKing’sOwnRegimentwhogavetheirlivesinthegreatwars.ThefollowingpicturesareofSt.Stephen’searlydayswhichwethoughtwouldbeofinteresttoyou.Spotthedifferencebetweenthenandnowwiththemainchurch.

ST. GEORGE’S DAY Sunday, April 24th– St. Stephen’s Parish is joined by members of the King’s Own Regiment of Calgary along with the Regimental Band under the direction of Capt. Natasha Mellish for our annual celebration of St. George’s Day.

CANTARE CHILDREN’s Choirs Cantilena and Cantiga (ages 6-11) present WITH HEARTS AND VOICES SOUNDING on Saturday, April 30th at 7:15 pm here at St. Stephen’s. Cantaré Children's Choir was formed in 1997 by Founder / Artistic Director Catherine Glaser-Climie to enrich the lives of children through the power and wonder of music. Cantaré's commitment to training young voices and the development of comprehensive musicianship skills and literacy is evidenced by the breathtaking magic of their performances and extensive range of choral repertoire at the highest artistic level. This unique program offers four ensembles to meet the needs of differing ages and backgrounds. Come and hear the beautiful sounds of children’s voices. LUMINOUS VOICES on MAY 7 at 8pm under the direction of Timothy Shantz are proud to present RESPONSIO composed by Peter Togni and featuring special guest, Jeff Reilly on bass clarinet . This concert is presented in partnership with the Calgary New Music Festival. In "Responsio", Togni reflects, comments, refutes, challenges and embellishes the bare medieval voice of Guillaume de Machaut and his medieval masterpiece the Messe de Nostre Dame. Juxtaposing bursts of bass clarinet improvisation against thorough composed choral material, Responsio casts the role of the bass clarinetist into

that of a time traveller, bringing forward Machaut's beautiful 14th creation into the heart of the 21st century.The piece will be performed by Patricia Thompson, mezzo-soprano; Katie Partridge, soprano;
