About the author
Marjolein Blaauboer was born on December 10th 1981 in Utrecht,
The Netherlands. She grew up in Maarsseveen and in 2000 she
received her high school diploma from the Utrecht Stedelijk
Gymnasium. Afterwards, she studied Human Movement Sciences
at the VU University in Amsterdam. During her studies she slowly
moved her interests towards the smaller level. She started at
measurements on human subjects and moved on to an internship
on an animal model at the Human Performance Laboratory of the
University of Calgary, supported by a Gerrit Jan van Ingen Schenau
Promising Young Scientist Award. She finished her Human
Movement Sciences with a literature review on signaling at the
cellular level. After discovering her interest for adaptational processes at the cellular level,
she continued in 2005 with a second Master on Molecular Cell Biology, also at the VU
University in Amsterdam. This combination of two Master studies was finalized in August
2007 and was awarded the Organon Young Talent Graduation Price for Biochemistry and
Biotechnology in the same year. In October 2007 she started her PhD research in a
collaboration between the Department of Oral Cell Biology of the Academic Centre of
Dentistry in Amsterdam (ACTA) and the Department of Metabolic Health Research of TNO
in Leiden, resulting in this thesis entitled: ‘Cell matrix interactions in lung fibrosis’. For part
of this work, she received the Young Investigator Award of the European Tissue Repair
Society in 2011. Currently, she is working as a post‐doc at the Department of Orthopaedics
of the VU University Medical Center on the role of mechanics in the embryonic development
of structure, focusing on the spine. She is married to Alejandro Peralta and they have a son,
David.
