Congratulations

Year 9 pupils at Woldgate School in Pocklington received their Archbishop of York Youth

Trust’s Young Leaders’ Award yester-day in a Special Awards Ceremony to celebrate their volunteering work in the local community.

161 pupils were involved in projects to make an active difference in their communities, both as groups and individuals. The pupils organised a school fair, using their own ideas and money to set up stalls, raising

over £500 for the children’s charity Unicef. A smaller group of pupils also visited Wold Haven, a local care home, where they served the resi-dents with tea, homemade cakes and biscuits, read with them and chatted about their memories of the past. All pupils, as part of their indi-vidual challenge, carried out acts of kindness, peer mentoring younger pupils, raising money for charity and helping elderly friends and relatives.

Prior to volunteering, pupils had

spent time in their Philosophy and Ethics lessons developing their leadership skills; exploring faith, leadership and the role of charities; and creating a personal action plan to make a positive difference in their local community.

HeadteacHer’s Welcome

‘Everything you do should be worthy, of great merit, character and value.’

We have had an excellent start to our academic year. The results published last week by the Department of Education ranked the school, once again, as one of the highest performing in the region. We are also significantly outperforming other schools by adding significant value

and ensuring our pupils make greater academic progress than at similar schools in our locality.

Ultimately, for me and my colleagues, it is our pupils and their outcomes that are key. Headline figures such as these clearly demonstrate the school is successful but more importantly it recognises the achievements of each individual pupil. Our figures, therefore, show that not only do 50% of our pupils achieve the top grades, but they also achieve significantly higher grades overall than at other local

schools. It is a huge testament to the determination and commitment of pupils and the dedication of staff in deliv-ering high quality teaching, and to the support of parents to ensure our young people are cared for, supported and challenged to do their very best.

Progress 8 is the measure that schools will be judged against from 2016 – the new ‘Gold Standard’ for judging school performance. The Progress 8 measure will be based on pupil progress measured across their eight best subjects within the following criteria:

• A double weighted GCSE Mathematics component.

• A double weighted English component.

• The three highest grades from the EBacc subjects – separate Sciences, Core and Addi-tional Science, Computer Science, Geography, History and Languages.

• The best three grades from any of the remaining subjects included within the “Open Group”. This could be three vocational subjects, EBacc subjects or any others included on the approved list.

We are ranked in the top 20% of schools in the country. With a Progress 8 figure of +0.22, we compare well to the East Riding of Yorkshire (+0.1) and to York (+0.04), with the national average being 0.00. If you would like to see the results and compare schools, then the tables are available at: https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/

Last week, we also had our annual Careers Fair. This was a huge logistical exercise, co-ordinating the diaries of compa-nies, universities and public service organisations, to ensure they could all attend and showcase their work on one evening. I would like to thank Mr Barrett for making this possible and I do hope your son or daughter enjoyed the evening and found it beneficial. I thought it was brilliant. I would also like to thank those students and parents who attended our Year 13 Parents’ Evening on Monday.

This week we also, under the leadership of our Heads of School and Heads of Care and Achievement, celebrated the achievements of our wonderful pupils at our Annual Awards Evenings. It is simply a joy to see our brilliant pupils receiv-ing the recognition they deserve for all of their commitment, determination and hard work. It was also great to see the achievements of all of our pupils throughout the year and to be reminded of the range of visits, enrichment activities, charitable fundraising events and the sports our young people participate in across the academic year.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the Sixth Form for a brilliant Charity week. Great fun and all for a good cause. From teachers being drenched, to cake stalls and competitions, they brought our community together in celebrating all that

makes our Sixth Form special.Do have a good weekend.

have approached the Award with such enthusiasm and commitment. You have obviously achieved an incredible amount with both your personal and community projects, which have clearly had a really positive impact on many people. It is fantastic to hear about the huge range of people you have worked with and supported. You really are embracing and living the award strapline ‘be the change you want to see.’ Well done to you all.”

From front page.

This week we have been celebrating our Lower School pupils’ achievements in our annual Awards Evenings. In Lower School, both Year 8 and Year 9 have their own Awards Evenings, hosted by their own Head of Care & Achievement. During the evening, pupils, parents and teachers join in

recognising the successes and achievements of our pupils during the past year. Pupils are nominated for awards by their subject teachers, Form Tutors and Head of Care & Achievement, and each pupil is invited on stage to receive their award certificate. No matter what award they win, each pupil clearly reflects our school motto; everything you do should be worthy of great merit, character and value.

It is not only academic success that is recognised during our Awards Evenings. Pupils are recognised and celebrated for their contribution to school life, through Form Tutor Awards. Furthermore, pupils from amongst the year group perform songs, musical pieces and even dances to entertain parents and pupils alike.

I look forward to Awards Evenings each year. They are a chance to not only celebrate and reflect on past achieve-ments and successes; they are also an opportunity to look ahead towards the future. I have no doubt that our pupils will continue to make us proud in the year to come.

As we come to the end of an extremely busy half term, it has been fantastic to be part of our Upper School Awards evenings this week where pupils have received the recognition for all their hard work and success during last academic year. In particular, it is always lovely to welcome in

our parents as the partnership between home and school is crucial in supporting our young people. Although they don’t often show it, the conversations that I have with pupils on a daily basis suggest that they do really value the support they get from both home and school.

On the 2nd and 3rd November, we will be holding our Study Support evenings for Year 11 pupils and their parents. During this evening we aim to share some practical tips about supporting pupils

through the remaining months of Year 11 and will encourage parents to work with their child as we look ahead to a number of opportunities that will be available to them over the course of the year. I know that both Mrs Atkinson and myself are really looking forward to seeing our Year 11 parents on these two evenings.

sixtH form College Mrs Lawson Writes:

As we come to the end of our first half-term, students have much to celebrate. The introduction of our House System this September has seen our Sixth Formers get more involved than ever in whole school activities. Our students have also been actively engaged in the wider community,

volunteering for local charities and working with local businesses to complete work experience. We finish this half term with a huge celebration of our Sixth Form and school community, through our annual charity week. Students have organised events to take place all week and we are set to have raised a huge amount of money by the end of the week.

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to our Sixth Form College Open Evening on Thursday 10th November at 7pm.

Woldgate Sixth Form College is a caring and supportive learning environment where every student is known as an individual, and where students are given the opportunity to develop both academically and personally. Students at Woldgate are ambitious and successful, enabling them to progress on to their first choice of university, apprentice-ship or employment.

Open Evening will be an opportunity for you to find out about joining the Sixth Form at Woldgate, and to learn more about specific subject areas that you are considering studying. We welcome students from across the region and, as a high-performing Sixth Form, we ensure students experience excellent teaching and learning, and are challenged and supported to achieve their full potential.

boys football

The Boys football teams have had some success this half term.

The Year 7 team was knocked out of the National cup on penalties by Howden following an excellent match, but have progressed through to the quarter finals of the East Riding cup after a thrilling 5-4 win away at Hornsea. Kyle Davies scored a last minute winner to ensure the boys didn’t have to go to penalties again.

They are currently in third place in the league with Howden still to play, having beaten Market Weighton, drawn with Goole, and lost to Snaith.

The Year 8 team has continued to improve. Following defeats to Market Weighton and Snaith in the league, they drew against Goole in a league and cup double header. As the game went into extra-time, Ben Kirkham scored 2 goals to take the team to a 4-2 win and into the quar-ter finals.

The Year 9 team have enjoyed some tight matches this year, but are still awaiting their first win of the season. They pushed Howden close

in the National cup before a close encounter against Hornsea in the East Riding cup.

The Year 10 team has had mixed year. They have suffered a number of inju-ries meaning they have had to utilise the full squad! In the East Riding cup, they lost narrowly to Hornsea, while Snaith knocked them out of the National cup. However, they have won every game in the league, meaning that if they beat Howden they will be league winners. Their best result was a 4-2 win at home vs Snaith, with Josh Broadbent scoring all 4 goals!

girls football

It has been great to see the numbers increase at training and the integra-tion from Girls from Yr. 7 – Y13.

The Year 7 and 8 team are through to the third round of the PlayStation Cup. The next match is a home fixture and is due to played on Tuesday 1st November against St Marys College, Hull. Woldgate have been unbeaten so far and have scored an impressive 13 goals. Sirius Academy were the opposition in the first round and the U13 team beat them 5-1. Cara Durkin

and Rose Ella receiving player of the match awards.

In the second round of the competi-tion Woldgate beat Malet Lambert 8-1. Players of the match were Rose Ella and Fifon Jones. The impres-sive partnership between Madison Stanton and Holly Cooper up front proved destructive.

Year 9 and 10 proved that Woldgate girls are full of great character and value when they went to play Sirius Academy. It was a tough match against a really strong team, all players displayed grit and deter-mination. The team lost, however, the team are passionate to make improvements and committed to training. Players of the match were Poppy Creaser and Ciara Allan.

The U18 team battled hard against a strong South Hunsley team (a team that had won the competition the previous season.) It was great to see Woldgate have a Girls Sixth Form Football team out for the first time. The score did not reflect the commitment and skill of the Wold-gate team. The stand out player of the match was Millie Templeman.

We hope to see more of you at train-ing next half term.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Lucie, who won our Pupil Passport competition during our Open Evening on Thursday 6th Octo-ber. Lucie won a Kindle Fire tablet as her prize and was clearly thrilled when

she and her mother collected it from Woldgate School.
