Debra Wolford-Riser, a MAG member, is a free hand and sacred geometry mandala artist. Deb’s first free-hand mandala, created in 2008, served as a road map to help her transform her life. Since then, she has personally used mandalas in a variety of

ways to manifest, heal, gain clarity, relax, and plain old doodle. Professionally, Deb uses mandalas as a form of art therapy to enhance well-being. Deb is an

experienced and engaging presenter. She enjoys teaching others how to tap into the magic of mandalas to enhance well-being, explore creativity in a new ways, and simply

What is a Juried / Judged show?

In April 2020, MAG introduces a new type of show to the Exhibition schedule…”Shadow Play” will be a Juried Show. Juried Shows differ from our regular Open Shows and/or Judged Shows. In Open/Judged Shows, the pieces you bring in are accepted if they meet framing, size, and any other stated regulation in the prospectus and you pay the entrance fee. In essence, meet all the criteria and your work is in our open shows.

In a Juried Show, the Juror (chosen/hired by the Guild) acts as a curator. The difference is “if or how” your artwork is accepted into a Juried Show. The procedure is as follows:

1) You bring your artwork in, pay the entrance fee as usual. 2) The Juror then comes to the gallery to view all entered work. 3) The Juror then decides “which” artwork will be hung in the show. 4) You are contacted after the selection if your work does NOT “Make the Cut” and you’re required to pick up your artwork on the stated date/time. Your entry fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. It is possible that one or more of your entries will not be chosen. 5) Artwork accepted is then judged by the Juror for ribbons and awards.

Entering a Juried Show may seem VERY intimidating, but it is an important step in your advancement as an artist. Any artist who’s entered a Juried Show will tell you it’s stressful, but such a great feeling to be chosen and an important step in your art journey. Not getting your work accepted can be frustrating, even traumatic to some, but it happens to every artist and with a rejection you learn more about how to improve your artwork and your presentation of your artwork.

Introduction of a Juried Show is a learning tool for our members. Preparing for entering this type of show requires you to think about all aspects of your piece … the theme, to best practices in composition and creativity, and making sure you have framed your piece in a way “ready for sale”. This means clean mats – white or light grey are what Jurors like to see, backings properly done for the medium, pieces wired correctly, and the frame chosen is best suited to your piece.

If you have questions, concerns, etc, please contact a board member, as many of the board have entered and been accepted into Juried Show. Don’t think you CAN’T be in this show, YOU CAN! We are here to help you get over this important hurdle in your artistic journey!
