Cookin’ for Moore, OK In the aftermath of the tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma, “Cooking in Central” is returning to its origins and is again “Cookin’ for Our Neighbors”. First honoring the commitments made to all local schools and the Veterans’ Memorial Garden, Cooking in Central will be sending half of the remaining proceeds to Moore, Oklahoma. If the event is as successful as recent years, the storm relief check could easily top $50,000. The Cooking event was born in 2006 when “Cookin’ for Our Neighbors” raised $200,000 to send to the Chalmette Schools after Hurricane Katrina. In that same spirit everyone in the Baton Rouge area has a great opportunity next weekend to support Cooking in Central’s effort to help out in Oklahoma. So, come out Friday and Saturday, June 7 & 8, to the Cooking in Central property on Blackwater Road and help Cookin’ help Oklahoma. Two dignitaries from Moore, Oklahoma are being flown in courtesy of the BR Metro Airport just to attend Cooking in Central. They will be on hand through the entire event and will return home to Moore, OK having had a taste of the great cooking and even greater generosity of the City of Central. Friday night kicks off with Central’s largest Crawfish Boil a 5 PM, tickets are $15. Carbon Copy band plays at 7PM. Saturday the event opens at 10 AM and features silent and live auctions, local entertainment, kids’ games and the great Cookoff. Meal tickets are $10. The event concludes with Burnhouse Band beginning at 3:00 Saturday. BR Metro Airport to Fly In Moore Dignitaries At 6 PM next Monday, June 3rd, the Central High School Auditorium will be host to a joint public meeting between the City of Central and the Central Community School System. Members of the School Board and City Council will meet with Mayor Watts and Superintendent Faulk to discuss possible uses of the old Central Middle School property. The meeting will include input and discussion between the assembled elected officials. There will also be time allotted for comments and questions from the public. This is a non- voting workshop meeting for both elected bodies to discuss this issue only. By Dave Freneaux What right do you have to keep people from coming to your door selling merchandise or asking for donations? According to Central Council Member Wayne Messina, the answer is simple. If you do not want them knocking on your door, place a "No Soliciting" sign at your front door. He explains that you may then answer your door and tell any would-be solicitor that they are trespassing and ask them to leave. If they refuse you may call the Sheriff's office because they are breaking two laws: Trespassing, and Remaining After Forbidden. Council Member Messina had recently introduced an ordinance for consideration by the Council to limit the hours of the day during which people could go

door-to-door and to require them to register with the city to do so. The intent was to limit the hours to such times as people would likely be home and thereby reduce the use of such activities to serve as a cover for potential neighborhood burglars to case homes. Unfortunately, explains Messina, the ordinance had to be withdrawn because court decisions upholding free speech and political campaigning have made ordinances such as this all but impossible to enact. While his preference was to control door-to-door peddling via ordinance, he sees that he will have to settle with making the people of Central aware that they can indeed stop this practice at their individual front door with a simple "No Soliciting" sign.

“Elvis” Coming to Kristenwood

I’m a firm believer that all things can be caused to do some good, even when we can’t see it at the time. Cooking in Central got postponed in May due to heavy rains, and that seemed to be a bad thing. But now with Moore, Oklahoma being hit with one of the most fierce tornados on record, Central stands poised to share our good fortune with our neighbors in Oklahoma. This year’s Cooking in Central has been nicknamed “Cookin’ for Moore, OK”, and Cooking has now designated half of

the uncommitted proceeds of the event to be sent to Moore, Oklahoma. Baton Rouge Metro Airport is even flying in two representatives from Moore, OK to attend “Cookin’ for Moore, OK”. With a donation possibly exceeding $50,000, made possible by a simple rain delay, perhaps something good has come out of what we all thought was unfortunate rain last month. This year, perhaps even more than others, consider coming out to Cookin’ Friday and Saturday of next week, June 7 & 8. Invite some friends to Friday evening’s crawfish boil, buy an extra plate of barbecue Saturday, or bid a little more on a silent auction item, knowing that all of this will help our Oklahoma neighbors. This, my generous Central friends, is Good News for a Great City.

Submitted by Lauren Valenti Each year, Central Community Theatre selects an “Elite” team to travel to Atlanta, Georgia in January to compete at the Junior Theatre Festival. After each performance, “Golden Tickets” are handed out to a select few outstanding actors and actresses from each theatre. This year, Central Community Theatre had six outstanding students chosen. Upon receiving this ticket, these young actors and actresses are given the opportunity to audition to spend ten days during the summer in New York City, filming a choreography DVD with iTheatrics and Music Theatre International.

Only two of the six were chosen to come for a call-back on the final day of auditions. One of whom, Shelbi Lambert, is a ten year old 5th grader at CIS. The two finalists sang and danced their hearts out against about 80 other hopefuls from all over the United States. At the end of the audition, the kids were grouped together and photos were snapped of them with their audition numbers. They were told they would be notified (via e-mail) in March whether or not they made the final cut. On March 5th, the email came. It read, “I am thrilled to be writing to ask you to be part of iTheatrics Broadway Junior Choreography DVD shoot!” Shelbi will be spending her summer in filming New York City. Congratulations to Shelbi Lambert and Central Community Theatre on having one of their students chosen for this opportunity. Break a leg!

Written by Brittany Smith, Tanglewood Technology Teacher & Leslie Pierce, Speech Pathologist - Central Community Schools Three classes from Tanglewood Elementary School enjoyed a very special field trip to Raising Cane’s in Central on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. This field trip was the result of a competition held at the school between classes earlier in the spring to raise money for the annual event “Cooking in Central”. Raising Cane’s store manager, Brad Pine, contacted Tanglewood’s school Principal to offer this field trip (free of charge) as an incentive to help with the fundraising efforts. The competition grew fierce as the top fund raising classes changed almost daily until the final day. Placing first in the competition was Mrs. Well’s class, raising $940. Placing second was Mrs. Gremillion’s class, raising $890. All together, the competition helped generate more than $8,000 in funds for the “Cooking in Central” event. Raising Cane’s in Central is known for community participation, especially in Central Community Schools. Not only did Pine offer a field trip to the top fundraising classes for “Cooking in Central”, but also offered up TWO “Tanglewood Cane’s Nights” at Raising Cane’s in Central. This is an annual event where partial proceeds from customers who mention “Tanglewood” when purchasing the famous (and may I add, delicious) chicken tender meals actually go to Tanglewood. Both nights raked in an amazing $1,835! Pine also offered the top participating class from “Tanglewood Cane’s Night” a spot in the coveted field trip where not only lunch is provided, but a tour of the workings of the Raising Cane’s in Central as well as the history of how Raising Cane’s began is in the deal. The winner of the “Tanglewood Cane’s Nights” was Mrs. Marcotte’s class.

“We eat well in Southeast Louisiana,” I was told before we moved to Central from St. Louis, MO late last June. This statement is true. We do eat well in Southeast Louisiana because there is great food in Southeast Louisiana! In one year’s time I have come to love jambalaya, gumbo, boiled crawfish, boudin, and the many different variety of sausages that are unique to our area. It is my understanding that all of this good food and more will be offered at “Cooking in Central” on June 7 & 8. I am looking forward to eating some great food and enjoying the wonderful people of Southeast Louisiana at “Cooking in Central” at Amazing Place. Maybe I will meet you there! There is so much good food to eat in Central, and I encourage you to patronize our local restaurants and retailers. However, there is another way in which we can eat well in Central. This “Eating in Central” is not for our bodies but for our souls. Each of us needs

to eat in order to keep our bodies strong. We also need regular feeding in order to keep our souls strong and doing what the LORD commands. In Deuteronomy 8:3, we read, “… man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” This means that we need food for our bodies and our souls, and the food that we need for our souls comes from the Bible. I love the Bible. It is God’s Word. It is the truth. It is what we need for faith and life. I encourage you to add the Bible to your diet of “Eating in Central” on a daily basis. Have a plan for how you will read the Bible. If you don’t have a reading plan, ask your pastor, and if you don’t have a pastor please feel free to ask me. By God’s grace, reading the Bible (“Eating in Central” in a spiritual sense) will lead you to another “amazing place”!

The City of Central held its Memorial Day service last Thursday, May 23rd at the Central High School Theater. Memorial Day serves as a reminder each year that our freedom is not free, and that we should be thankful for those who have served, and those who continue to serve, our country. Please take a moment to remember those who have paid the ultimate price in service, and thank those who have served and are still with us.

Central Basketball youth camp, one of the biggest and best youth camps in the surrounding areas, will be held June 3rd-6th. The camp teaches young basketball players the basic skills and assists young players in proving already learned skills. The camp is offered to boys between the ages of 7 – 13 and is broken into two groups: SEC for younger athletes and the NBA for the older athletes. Campers will be instructed by CHS basketball staff and current players and held at the newly renovated CHS Gym. Central Basketball Elite Camp is a new camp offered to a limited number of players between the

ages of 12-14 and is held July 8th-11th. This camp is for experienced players who want improve their skills for the next level and prepare for the upcoming season. Elite Camp is different from any camp in surrounding area, as players will receive daily feedback on their performance and progress. Players will be videoed and their progress will be reviewed prior to each day’s workout. Each player will receive a workout packet at the completion of camp, so they can continue their progress to their goals. Dr. Deepak Thekkoott of Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) will be a featured presenter at the New Cardiovascular Horizons (NCVH) conference held from June 5-7, 2013 at The Marriott Hotel in New Orleans. Known as the largest peripheral intervention conference in the United States, NCVH will attract interventional cardiologists, vascular physicians, surgeons, podiatrists and other industry professionals worldwide. During NCVH, new methods and data will be unveiled for the first time in the United States. Entering its 14th year, NCVH will concentrate on limb salvage and amputation prevention techniques for patients suffering from PAD and CLI. The conference will draw more than 1,500 attendees and 100 exhibitors. One of the unique aspects of the conference is that it transmits more than 30 live and intricate interventional cases from eight different sites around the world. Led by a prestigious group of physicians, the live cases are a distinctive teaching method focusing on advanced techniques that will result in safe, effective and superior outcomes for patients. This conference will offer a wealth of knowledge to the field of peripheral arterial interventions including discussions about the economic impact of peripheral arterial disease and new state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment. PAD currently affects 12 million Americans and that number continues to grow

each year. “The field of peripheral and cardiac interventions is ever-changing with patients having progressively better outcomes. Our program provides actionable clinical insights in leading-edge interventions, state-of-the-art technology and advanced educational tools to support optimal outcomes for patients with PAD and CLI,” said Dr. Craig Walker, founder of the Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) and chairman of NCVH. “Through our multispecialty approach, we create an environment that embraces clinical collaboration resulting in a stronger continuum of care for the patient.” The conference and CIS were both founded by Dr. Walker. CIS remains nationally recognized as the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accreditation provider for NCVH. About NCVH: New Cardiovascular Horizons (NCVH) is attended by more than 2,000 physicians, scientists, allied professionals and industry professionals from around the world. The meeting takes a multidisciplinary approach to limb salvage and amputation prevention techniques, offering comprehensive educational programs for each specialty. Live limb salvage case demonstrations are an integral part of the meeting. For more information, visit www.ncvh.org. For more information about CIS, call 1-800-425-2565 or visit www.cardio.com.
