Executive Director, Porterville College Foundation

Scholarship donors and the community of Porterville take pride in the accomplishments of the Porterville College students who apply

for and receive scholarships and awards.

Program

Since 1970, the Scholarship Ceremony has given faculty and staff an opportunity to honor those special students who have achieved academic excellence at Porterville College . The concept was originally conceived by Science Professor Burl Cuffman .

When the ceremony was first held, 50 students were recognized and about 150 to 200 family members and friends attended . An estimated $7,450 was awarded in scholarships and awards .

Donations given in 1970 that are still awarded today are: The American Association of University Women (AAUW), The Francis Noble Gault and W .P . Bartlett School .

Funds are derived from donations to the Porterville College Foundation . Some individual donations (frequently in memory of a specific person) or bequests of larger endowed sums are deposited in a trust so that scholarships can be paid solely from the earnings .

The Porterville College Scholarship Committee is comprised of one faculty member from each Division, a classified employee, Foundation Executive Director, Director of

Financial Aid and representatives from the Financial Aid and Foundation Offices.

The committee reviews all scholarship applications and meets to deliberate and select scholarship and award recipients based on the donor’s specified criteria.

Porterville College Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship and Awards selection process1. Applications are made available in October with a November deadline for submission .

2. Applications must be completed . No late or incomplete applications are accepted .

3. Each application is scored by each member of the Scholarship Committee . Points are allocated according to the following:

4. Computerized lists are prepared for each category listing by rank . The applicant’s total points are accumulated per category (a-e in #3 above).

5. The Scholarship Committee meets to consider the criteria for each scholarship and award Criteria, established by the donor, may include all or a combination of the following:

The Scholarship Committee ranks students by accumulated points and the criteria of each of the scholarships and awards to make selections. Students with a Grade Point

Average of 3.0 or above are eligible for Scholarships; students with a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or above are eligible for Awards.

Selection procedures have evolved over a period of 30 years and are reviewed annually for improvements. Members of the College Scholarship Committee consider their

participation valuable to student success at Porterville College. They are exceptionally pleased with the results of their deliberations.

Mission Statement - The Porterville College Foundation will support Porterville College in developing activities, programs and facilities to the best interest of students; will actively solicit gifts, bequests and other income; and will demonstrate prudent fiduciary responsibility in the administration of those funds .

History - Established by a group of citizens interested in the future of Porterville College, the Foundation Board and members of the community have worked together to maintain and enhance college programs and facilities . Each year, current and future needs of the college are reviewed . The Foundation endeavors to address these needs directly .

Private Support - Porterville College belongs to the community and serves the higher education needs of area residents . College programs have been developed to meet the specific needs of the community . Private, tax-deductible gifts to the Foundation allow Porterville College to maintain and enhance the educational programs of this outstanding community college .

Methods of Giving - Tax-deductible giving is tailored to the individual financial considerations and wishes of the donor . Gifts may be made immediately or as a part of a deferred plan . Pledges through wills or trusts, gifts of cash or non-cash, and remembrances in the form of memorials and honorariums for individuals or occasions are gratefully accepted by the Foundation .

The Foundation has set a goal to raise the total number of individual endowments to sixty.
