Research Grants

Not Funded 2016-2017 [Year 1 of 3]: Benson, T., Bahrim, C., Bernazzani, P., Kenyon, G. N. , & Safa, M. Reducing

Industrially Triggered Climate Changes via a Comprehensive Carbon Management Program, Co-Principal Investigator.

Pending 2017-2018: Kenyon, G. N. 2017-2018 Faculty Grant, Principal Investigator. David Anderson (2013) said

that the most important issues that maritime ports are facing is dealing with the substantial increase in

port activities, while retaining a competitive edge. The level of growth over the past few decades has been challenging, especially in terms of increased pressure on ports and supply infrastructure. He

believed that part of the solution involved coordinated investments in the supply chains to optimize port throughput, and that this would require planning better landside access to get goods in and out of ports

more efficiently. In addition, Goldsmith (2017) advocates that in order to achieve maximum optimization and financial returns require improving the linkage, coordination and actual real-time management across

the entire global supply chain.

The current logistics environment has a high degree of uncertainty due to the maturing and

rationalization of port activities, an ever changing commercial environment, and extensive business networks within complex logistics systems (Notteboom and Rodrigue, 2005 & 2006 ). United Nations

Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD, 2016) recognizes that due to the growth rate of world

trade, there was a need for improvements in port performance. These dynamics are forcing Port Authorities and Port Managers to reassess both their role and the specific competences of their respective

ports and regions that could lead to competitive advantages; thus positioning their ports for growth. The UNCTAD even recommended that policymakers identify and invest in maritime sectors where their

countries had a comparative advantage.

This research seeks to identify and understand the relationship between various port activities and land

usages with regional conditions and infrastructure. It is further expected that cause and effect relationships can be identified and quantified; thus providing the maritime industry with information that

leads to greater effectiveness and efficiency. This grant proposal supports the data collect, analysis, and creation of the final summary report. The principle objectives of the work supported by this grant are: 1.

Collect data on maritime port performance and regional factors affecting port development and

competitiveness. 2. Analyze and test hypotheses. 3. Produce one or more journal articles and conference proceedings. 4. Write a report containing a descriptive summary of the data, benchmark data points, and

best practice recommendations based upon the statistical analytical results of the collected data. This report will be made available to all Ports participating in the survey and the industry associations

supporting it.
