Welcome and Introduction

Welcome to MSc Shipping delivered at City Campus by BCA. The MSc in Shipping has been offered at BCA since 1998, and has been an enormous success. We intend to do everything we can to make your experience on this MSc as rewarding and enjoyable as possible. We are always keen to hear your ideas and suggestions – we endeavour to make this distance learning format of the MSc degree/Postgraduate Diploma /Postgraduate Certificate every bit as successful as the campus degree, and your views are very important to us. The MSc in Shipping is designed to be flexible in the choice of option subjects, and being offered on a distance learning pattern of attendance, is of specific interest to international students and professionals with a busy schedule. The course is designed for graduates and professionals who seek an in-depth education and knowledge development in the traditional, yet developing maritime sector, but cannot attend regular taught classes. A number of designated topics have been established that enable students to pursue clearly defined shipping areas. In this way, it is envisaged that students will be able to specialise in the areas of their interest. The programme of studies combines a thorough understanding of the theoretical concepts of shipping business in particular, along with case studies and practical subjects. The modules offered cover the entire range of the main generic shipping business areas and functions, and put particular focus on decision making. This programme has been designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge base required to work in your chosen specialism or other graduate opportunities. It is also a platform from which you can undertake additional vocational and academic qualifications. This text is definitively approved at programme approval and therefore may be directly used for promotion of the programme without the need for further confirmation (approx.. 200-250 words): The MSc Shipping is the ideal postgraduate degree for achieving or developing high caliber careers in the shipping industry. As the programme is offered on a distance learning pattern of attendance, is of specific interest to international students and professionals with a busy schedule. The course is designed for graduates and professionals who seek an in-depth education and knowledge development in the traditional, yet developing maritime sector, but cannot attend regular taught classes. The course balances between advanced academic theories and practical knowledge and its structure is suitable for shipping graduates that aim to expand their knowledge and skills and for graduates without a shipping background that seek a demanding conversion course. The MSc Shipping is designed to be flexible and tailor made through a number of choice modules that enables focus on specific job areas usually pursued by graduates within shipping companies. Upon successful completion, graduates are expected to excel in their professional career, leading to higher levels of managerial positions in shipping companies and organisations.

4. Exceptions to Plymouth University Regulations

(Note: Plymouth University’s Academic Regulations are available internally on the intranet: https://staff.plymouth.ac.uk//extexam/academicregs/intranet.htm ) All University of Plymouth Regulations will apply to this programme. A minor exception refers to the use of 10 credit modules at BCA for reasons ranging from ensuring recognition of professional rights of its graduates to making it more marketable. In Greece recognition of professional rights of EU degree holders requires a mapping exercise of the programme syllabus run at the college with a respective programme syllabus in Greek state universities. By including 10 credit modules in the programme, the number of modules, as well as the content of the programme, make it comparable with similar programmes offered by Greek state universities, and thus, recognition of professional rights of its graduates will be safeguarded. Moreover, it is expected that such an approach will enhance the marketing potential of the programme. In the current economic conditions in Greece such an approach will grant the college a competitive advantage as, among other things, the number of the modules offered is thought of and will be marketed as value-adding. In year referrals will be offered to students over Easter for the Autumn Semester and over the summer vacation period for the Spring Semester. Students of this program may submit extenuating circumstances with evidence from their

8. Student Numbers

The following provides information that should be considered nominal, and therefore not absolutely rigid, but is of value to guide assurance of the quality of the student experience, functional issues around enabling progression opportunities to occur and staffing and resource planning:

Page 9: ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAMME QUALITY ... - BCA iLearn

University of Plymouth Academic Partnerships Programme Quality Handbook INT 20-21 Page 9 of 85 Last Saved: 18/11/2020

Minimum student numbers per stage = 8 Target student numbers per stage = 40 Maximum student numbers per stage = as the programme grows in popularity, the college will ensure there are sufficient administrative, professional and academic staff and other resources required to meet the increased needs at all times

9. Progression Route(s)

Approved ‘progression route(s)’ are those where successful achievement in this programme enables direct alignment to join a stage of another programme. This is an approach employed primarily for Foundation Degree students to ‘top-up’ to complete a Bachelor degree, but may be employed for other award types. This is in part an automated admissions criterion and therefore progression may be impacted on by availability of a position on the progression award; however progression opportunity, if not available in the first year of application, is guaranteed within 3-years. Progression arrangements with institutions other than Plymouth University carry an increased element of risk. It is necessary for the delivering partner institution to obtain formal agreement from that institution to guarantee progression for existing students on the programme. For progression to Plymouth University, should there be the need to withdraw the progression route programme(s) then either this will be delayed to provide progression or appropriate solutions will be found. This arrangement is guaranteed for existing students that complete their programme of study with no suspensions or repeat years and who wish to progress immediately to the University. This programme can lead on to further specialised study at PhD Level. The contribution of marks from prior levels of study to the progression award is governed by University regulations.

1. Explanation and Mapping of Learning Outcomes, Teaching & Learning and Assessment3

Developing graduate attributes and skills, at any level of HE, is dependent on the clarity of strategies and methods for identifying the attributes and skills relevant to the programme and where and how these are operationalized. The interrelated factors of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these are inclusive in nature, are fundamentally significant to these strategies and methods, as are where and how these are specifically distributed within the programme. Ordered by graduate attributes and skills, the following table provides a map of the above, plus an exposition to describe and explain the ideas and strategy of each. Therefore, subsequent to the initial completion for approval, maintenance of this table as and when programme structure changes occur is also important:

SUMMARY of MODULE CONTENT The module presents and analyses the criteria for defining good and bad dissertations, by underlining the differences between dissertation work and work for other modules. The research proposal and dissertation process are thoroughly presented with relevance to the roles of student and supervisor and dissertation management. The issues affecting the choice of dissertation topic, the identification and formulation of dissertation titles are thoroughly analysed. Special focus is placed upon the critical review of available literature and information resources, the use of On-line databases, CD-ROM based and paper based sources. Report styles are presented with working examples regarding the format of the standard dissertation. Particular emphasis is devoted to the analytical methods utilised in scientific research, addressing a review of basic methods of statistical analyses appropriate for dissertations and the association of different methods with different levels of analysis. Elements of questionnaire design and scaling systems for qualitative responses are analysed together with the potential problems of surveys research methods. Population configuration and sampling methods are analysed and variable types and quantitative data analysis with the proper statistical methods is demonstrated with the use of Ms Excel and SPSS.

SUMMARY of MODULE CONTENT The Module contents are divided in three parts: At first, it provides an overview of the basic principles of a marine insurance contract, identifies the parties to such contract and its various forms and types, discusses the way that it is concluded and the role of brokers and analyzes related fundamental concepts, such as indemnity, premium, insurable interest, utmost good faith and assignment of policy. At a second part, it provides an analysis of the way a marine insurance contract operates and discusses topics related to the classification of the contractual terms, the doctrine of proximate cause, the insured and excluded perils and the duty to sue and labour. The final part considers issues of indemnity, explains the nature of losses, distinguishes between total and partial loss, as well as particular and general average loss and particular charges and discusses subrogation and contribution. The basic sources of marine insurance law, that is to say, Courts’ decisions and the Marine Insurance Act 1906, as well as standard forms of marine insurance clauses used in the London market, will be discussed throughout, so as to provide the necessary tools for explaining, interpreting, analyzing and evaluating related practical and legal issues.

SUMMARY of MODULE CONTENT Students studying gas and oil business economics acquire a sound and in depth background in Energy Business economics, which determines the volumes and other variables of gas and oil that have subsequently to be transported. A bridge thus is built between the two. The strategic policy of certain worldwide players like OPEC is presented including the schist issue. Apart from giving emphasis on the business economics of transport of oil and gas at advanced level, the forecasting techniques will be presented to determine future oil and gas demand and supply. The module considers it to make students aware of the quest that oil and gas transport depends entirely on certain geopolitical economic issues that will be analysed and related. Case-studies will be used and scenarios-analysis techniques will be presented and applied. The module will make students able to anticipate structural changes in the potential of relaxing dependence on oil and evaluate their impact on its transport. Environmental impacts will be taken into account.
