Memorie Matthews is a past pupil of Tauranga Girls’ College and presented the MEMORIE MATTHEWS SHIELD to the College in 1969 for it to be awarded to the young Maori woman who has made the greatest all-round contribution to school. The Shield was carved by Cliff Matthews using Kauri from a desk top of the first school he attended, Otumoetai 1919, and Totara from an old mill in the King Country Bush. The female twin tongue figures denote citizenship and academic striving in the face of limitations. The heart is to remind that citizenship and academic striving need to be paramount in our heart’s desire for improvement.

GOD DEFEND NEW ZEALAND
E Ihoa Atua, O nga Iwi! Matoura, Ata whakarongona; Me aroha noa. Kia hua ko te pai; Kia tau to atawhai: Manaakitia mai Aotearoa.
God of Nations! At Thy Feet In the bonds of love we meet, Hear our voices, we entreat, God defend our free land. Guard Pacific's Triple Star From the shafts of strife and war Make her praises heard afar God defend New Zealand.
