WRITING AN ACADEMIC PAPER

1. Starting from a problem (classic, common, unique, etc).

2. Using standard methodology and method to analyse and solve the problem.

3. Notes to write an academic paper for journal publication

a) Use the last 5 year referrence.

b) Use standard academic writing and language: (i) length of paragraph, quotation, italic, link among paragraph, colour.

c) Proportion of each part.

d) Academic language style (not an article, speech or non formal language).

e) Use standard english writing, not an “indonesian english”

f) No plagiarism.

4. Interconnection among parts in the paper and final outputs should anwer the problem (purpose of the paper).

Page 12: Academic Workshop on How to Publish Papers in Reputable ...iciebp.conference.upi.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ICIEBP-ppt-rifki_ismal.pdf · COMPARISON: JOURNAL, NEWSPAPER, BOOK

Start from the problem in the field.

• The selected problem should be economically reasonable, not just proposing a model, quantitative tools or an up date method without economic meaning or reason, for examples:

✓ The impact of the global financial crisis to consumption of corn in tasikmalaya.

Logically, it is too far to investigate the impact of the global financial crisis to consumption rate in tasikmalayaa.

✓ The impact of Islamic bank performance on the monetary policy.

Monetary policy and islamic bank have a weak correlation. Even the monetary policy does not target islamic banks (unless islamic monetary policy).

WRITING AN ACADEMIC PAPER

Page 13: Academic Workshop on How to Publish Papers in Reputable ...iciebp.conference.upi.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ICIEBP-ppt-rifki_ismal.pdf · COMPARISON: JOURNAL, NEWSPAPER, BOOK

✓ The impact of the Islamic monetary policy to SME performance.

Monetary policy does not ever think of SME.

✓ VAR Model to assess factors affecting constructing financing in islamic bank.

this is useless since Islamic banks do not target construction financing.

✓ Competition of the foreign banks and local banks among ASEAN countries.

this topic is too large, difficult to produce specific output useful for knowledge and science.

For academic paper to be published in international journal

• Solving the problem is not specifically written but embodied in the background of the paper.

• Research questions (related to the questions) should not specifically written, rather included in one of the paragraph.

• Then, (i) research hypothesis, (ii) limitation of the research, (iii) logic of thinking, etc should not be written in the paper.

• Not a descriptive paper but an analysis, empirical assessment.

• Methodology and method should not be specifically written (a special part) in the paper, rather, just write in the paragraph.

For academic paper to be published in international journal

• Limitation of the paper should not be specifically written (sub title, etc) in the paper.

• Title of the academic paper should be concise, specific, short but clear and attractive.

• Do not include technique of analysis, period of analysis, expected output etc, for examples:

• Credit risk in Indonesian Islamic banking industry

• Islamic macroprudential policy

• Synergy between islamic monetary and fiscal to improve government policy.

• Don’t write “thanks” to others in the paper.

3. Explaining on one thing is needed if:

➢ Unknown by the public

➢ Output of the research

4. In the introduction and background paper, no need to put grapth, table, etc, put them in the analysis part.

5. Quotations are accommodated in the literature review.

6. Just quote the last name of the reference author, no need to write academic title, etc.

Page 23: Academic Workshop on How to Publish Papers in Reputable ...iciebp.conference.upi.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ICIEBP-ppt-rifki_ismal.pdf · COMPARISON: JOURNAL, NEWSPAPER, BOOK

STYLE OF WRITING

1. If the author constructs his/her own graph, figures, etc, no need to write “sources: author’s own, modified by author, etc.

2. In abstract no need to write formula, quotation, graph, etc. Abstract has only:

✓ Purpose of the paper,

✓ Analyses being done,

✓ Output of the paper

✓ Contribution to the knowledge and science.

3. Do not use words: I, you, we, etc. please use passive sentence:

✓ The formula used in the paper is…don’t write: we use formula of….
