RECITAL ATTENDANCE

Purpose: The Recital Attendance policy is based on the belief that listening to live music is essential to training good musicians.

Recital Attendance Requirements:

Music majors entering as Freshmen are required to attend 10 programs per semester for six semesters (Transfer students, see below). At least three semesters of "RECITAL ATTENDANCE " should be completed by the end of the sophomore year in order to ensure that the requirements are met in time for graduation. Only events on the official School of Music Calendar will fulfill the Recital Attendance requirement. No Recital Attendance credit is earned by a student who performs in a recital.

The following Recital Attendance requirements shall apply to all transfer students:

TRANSFER CREDITS SEMESTERS OF RECITAL ATTENDANCE REQUIRED 0 - 11 6

12 - 18 5 19 - 36 4 37 - 54 3

55 – OR MORE 2

Music Majors enrolled on a part-time basis (fewer than 12 credits) may bank Recital Attendance.

NOTE: Banking of recitals does NOT apply to full-time students.

CHANGE OF MAJOR

A student wishing to transfer from one degree program of study at the University (or school) to another program must file a “Change of Major” request on his MyWCU account. The student must meet the standards for admission into the desired program and must obtain permission from the department chair involved. Any courses which were initially accepted for transfer credit from another college are subject to re-evaluation by the department to which the student transfers internally.

Page 6: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION

Students must see the Undergraduate Coordinator of the School of Music BEFORE the FIRST semester of the senior year in order to check that all required courses will have been taken by graduation. This should be done before scheduling classes for the final semester so that any deficiencies may be addressed and corrected in the last semester. Application for graduation is processed through MyWCU. Please check the Registrar's Office homepage for application deadlines

Graduation Honors:

Cum Laude: 3.25-3.49 GPA Magna Cum Laude: 3.50-3.74 GPA Summa Cum Laude: 3.75-4.00 GPA

To be eligible for honors distinction, transfer students must have completed a minimum of 64 semester hours at West Chester.

ADVISING

All School of Music Students must be advised every semester in order to schedule classes. Your assigned advisor is listed on your MyWCU account and should be contacted 2-3 weeks prior to your assigned scheduling date. Faculty advisors are full time faculty members who will help and guide you determine the classes you should take each semester in order to stay on track and graduate in time. Advisors can also help you with whatever problems you might have concerning your degree plan or the classes you are taking. Should your advisor not be available to meet with you, please contact either your Department Chair or the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.

When it is time to register for classes (usually October/November and February/March), you must set up an appointment (usual meeting will take 10-15 minutes if you come prepared) to meet with your assigned advisor. You will not be able to register for classes if you do not meet with your advisor in person. When you go to your advising appointment, bring your degree plan showing all the classes you have taken and a list of classes you would like to take the following semester. The more prepared you are, the more rewarding the experience will be.

Advisors will keep records of the student's course work, help select courses appropriate to the curriculum, make recommendations about curricular change and be available to help solve any academic problems the student may encounter. Students should make an appointment to see the advisor before scheduling time to decide what courses should be taken the following semester and to update their Curriculum Record Sheet. During Drop/Add period, students should consult

Page 7: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

with the advisor to be sure the courses dropped or added are consistent with curricular requirements.

Who is your advisor?

Music Theory, Composition, History, Elective Studies, and Performance: The chairperson or designee for the specific department

Music Education & Therapy: Students are assigned a freshman advisor (primary instructor in most cases) who will oversee their academic progress until they have earned 60 credits. At that point the student will be advised by a member of the Music Education Department until the senior year.

THEORY PLACEMENT TEST

This test is given at the beginning of each semester for any new student who wishes to attempt to begin the Theory or Aural Activities courses above the beginning level. It is required of all new transfer students. Depending on the test results, transfer credit from another school will be granted for all courses in Theory and Ear Training successfully completed below the level achieved in the placement test. Placement exams are NOT permissible after failing a Theory or Aurals course.

CHORAL PLACEMENT

Choral placement is determined by results of auditions (voice quality, sight singing, pitch memory) which are held in the Fall of each year. These auditions are mandatory for Voice and Keyboard majors as long as they have choir as a curricular requirement. Students placed in an upper level choir are expected to remain in that ensemble for two semesters.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE PLACEMENT

Instrumental ensemble placement is determined by audition results and ensemble needs. Placement auditions are held in the spring term for returning members and at the beginning of the fall semester for freshmen and transfer students.

Page 8: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

PIANO COMPETENCY

Piano Competency for non-keyboard majors is required in the following programs: BM in Theory/Composition, BM in Performance, BM: Elective Studies in an Outside Field. The Competency requirement may be met by the completion of the fourth semester of piano or passing a competency test

COURSE SEQUENCES

It is expected that students will take the same levels of Theory and Aural Activities during the same semester. However, under no circumstances will students be allowed to take a higher level of A.A. than that of Theory completed (e.g. they may not take Theory I and A.A. II). If necessary, the reverse is possible (e.g. they may take Theory II and A.A. I). Students may not "lag" more than one semester behind in Aural Activities.

English (WRT) and Math courses should be taken before the completion of 64 credits

Music History I (MHL210) must be taken before enrolling in Music History II (MHL211).

Conducting I must be taken before Conducting II.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Students are not able to self-schedule their major and/or minor instrument private lesson course as they will be automatically added to your schedule at the end of each semester. Contact the chairperson regarding minor lesson opportunities. Student should leave enough room in their schedule for these additional credits. Requests for elective private lessons or a change of private lesson instructor should be addressed to the appropriate department chairperson.

Practicing is very important to your success as a music major, and keeping a record of practice hours and progress is required by most faculty members. Please check your syllabi carefully.

All music majors will participate in a weekly studio hour class which will supplement their private lesson time. ALL music majors are required to keep 11-11:50am open on Thursdays (no other classes and/or work). Students should check calendar weekly with their private instructor for location, schedule, and cancellations.

Page 9: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

MAKE-UP PRIVILEGES FOR PRIVATE LESSONS

Private lessons missed by the instructor are made up at a time satisfactory to both the student and the instructor. Lessons missed by the student are made up ONLY if the instructor has been notified at least one day in advance and an acceptable reason is given for the cancellation. In an emergency, when one-day advance notice cannot be given, the lesson will be made up at the discretion of the instructor. In such case, the student must make every effort to give the instructor prior notice of his/her absence. (Call or email the instructor or the Music Office, 436-2739, as soon as possible).

Private lessons missed due to an excused absence (authorized by the School or University) are made up at a time satisfactory to both the student and the instructor.

ELECTIVE PRIVATE LESSONS

If the workload of the professor allows, elective lessons may be requested. To register for lessons, see the chairperson of the department in which the course is taught.

COMMUNITY MUSIC PROGRAM

WCU students or faculty teaching private lessons for a fee within Swope Music Building can only do so under the auspices of the Community Music Program. Please contact Dr. Grabb for more information at [email protected]

INSTRUMENT RENTAL

There is a $20.00 fee per semester for each instrument rented. Instruments are available in the A-V Room and rental cards must be signed in order to rent an instrument. A late fee may becharged for instruments not returned at the end of classes and names will be forwarded to theOffice of the Registrar to withhold grades. Lockers may be signed out for the academic year.Students may choose lockers that do not have locks on them by filling out and returning the slipsattached to empty lockers.

Page 10: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

These rooms are reserved for piano performance majors and music education majors taking private piano lessons. Smoking, eating or drinking in practice rooms is strictly prohibited.

Page 11: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

EXTRA REHEARSALS AND EXTRA PERFORMANCES FOR ENSEMBLES

I. General: It is necessary and desirable for ensembles to occasionally schedule extra rehearsals and extra performances both on and off campus. These extra commitments can interfere with a student's educational progress unless these extra events are kept within reasonable limits. Some students can handle busier schedules than others. Some ensembles have busier schedules than others and therefore the policy needs to be implemented with flexibility. Extra performances are defined as those performances that are not annual events in the ensemble schedule.

II. Policy: Extra ensemble performances on and off campus are generally limited to no more than two per semester, or, in the case of marching band, three performances per year. This includes weekends but does not include academic breaks. No extra performances will be scheduled during the last two weeks of class or during the final examination period. Extra rehearsals and extra ensemble events will be scheduled outside regular university class time (e.g. Friday evenings and weekends).

III. Implementation A. Faculty and Student responsibilities: Insofar as is possible, students will be told by their ensemble directors at the beginning of each semester what extra rehearsal or extra performing obligations are anticipated. If an extra performance conflicts with a scheduled class period, the ensemble director should not require the student to miss such class but should communicate with other faculty member and ask for permission on behalf of the student. If a faculty member feels a particular ensemble is exceeding "reasonable expectations", the Dean will convene a special meeting between the ensemble director and the faculty member in an effort to resolve the situation. Students are required to make up all assignments within one week of a class or lesson that is missed due to an extra performance. Students engaged in student teaching receive up to five full days of absences for adverse weather conditions, conferences, emergencies, interviews and performances. Ensemble faculty asking student teacher to miss for any performance should be communicate with and receive approval by the music education chairperson.

B. Dean's Office Responsibilities: The Dean’s office will receive notification of all extra rehearsals and extra performances for the semester as near to the beginning of each semester as possible but certainly no later than two weeks prior to the event. Please use official event form and provide the names of all participating students. These lists will then be distributed to all faculty. The Dean reserves the right to cancel any extra rehearsal or extra performance if, in his/her view, the event is likely to cause excessive disruption to the regular school schedule. Additionally, a student may be excused from an extra rehearsal or extra performance if, in the view of the Dean, that student is under extreme stress. Exceptions to the general policy may be made from time to time in order to accommodate special circumstances or needs within the Wells School of Music.

Page 12: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

MINOR FIELDS OF STUDY

Students may apply for transcript recognition if they complete an approved minor field of study. To receive such recognition, the student must complete 15-21 semester hours of courses selected in consultation with the minor program advisor. Students who have enough flexibility in their major curriculum to fulfill the requirements of a minor must fill out and submit a Minor Selection Application to the Office of the Registrar. To enroll in a minor field of study, students must have the permission of both their major and their proposed minor departments. See the University catalog for a list of approved minor fields. 1st Year REQUIREMENTS: The initial exposure to music education begins during the 1st year when students are required to attend group advisement meeting(s) to become familiar with the appropriate music education professional sequence and receive instructions about pre-methods observations and MUE 201 Music Education Seminar. Signs for the dates and times of these meetings will be emailed.

MUE 201 Music Education Seminar is offered each semester and must be taken no later than the semester prior to entering the professional sequence (MUE 331 Methods and Materials I). Most students will enroll in MUE 201 during the second semester of the 1st year or first semester of the 2nd year.

Students must have the following clearances prior to enrollment in this course:

1. Child Abuse Clearance Record 2. Pennsylvania State Police Act 34 Criminal Clearance 3. FBI Fingerprint check 4. TB/Polio

SOPHOMORE REQUIREMENTS: Pre-Professional Sequence Meeting: Students are required to attend a group advisement meeting to determine the semester in which the professional sequence will begin. Dates and times will be emailed. At these meetings, students will be advised to complete the following:

1. Professional Qualifying Test 2. Child Abuse Clearance Record 3. Pennsylvania State Police Act 34 Criminal Clearance 4. FBI Fingerprint check 5. TB/Polio 6. Passing scores as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education on the Basic

Page 17: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

JUNIOR REQUIREMENTS: MUE 331/Methods and Materials I and MUE 332/Methods and Materials II meet from 8-10:50 a.m. on either Tuesday or Thursday with the alternate day (T/R) reserved for Field Experiences. Both classes may be required to meet both Tuesday and Thursday as announced by the instructor. Field Experience is for classroom observation and participation in assigned public schools for a minimum of two and one-half hours per week. Courses other than MUE 331 and MUE 332 should NOT be scheduled at 11:00 on Tuesday/Thursday in order to allow for travel time. MUE 333 Instrumental Methods and Materials and MUE 335 Choral Methods and Materials are offered each semester. Interruption of the professional sequence requires the permission of the Chairperson and Coordinator of Music Education.

Potential student teachers must file an Application for Student Teaching during MUE 331 through the College of Education. The Praxis II Series, which is required for PA certification, should be taken at this time. Current Praxis II requirements may be obtained in the Certification Office. While not required, the eight (8) hour CPR/First Aid course, recognized by the National Red Cross and/or American Heart Association, is strongly recommended.

SENIOR REQUIREMENTS: Seniors who have completed all of the above requirements will be assigned tentative student teaching school placements approximately one month prior to teaching. Student teachers MUST ATTEND ALL seminar sessions. Dates of practica are distributed at the first seminar of the semester. Requirements and responsibilities are in the Student Teaching Handbook.

Liability Insurance: Teachers and student teachers have been held legally liable by the Pennsylvania courts for the behavior of learners under their direction. For this reason, it is necessary for the student teacher to be covered by liability insurance. Such insurance is sometimes provided by Homeowners policies already held by parents; it is also available through membership in the student PSEA/NEA.

Teacher Certification: The music education degree qualifies students for Pennsylvania Instructional Certification I. Requirements include:

1. Passing scores as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education on the Pre-Professional Skills Tests, which include reading, writing and mathematics.

2. Completion of MUE 431/ 432 Student Teaching with a “C” or better.

An “Application for Certification” is distributed at a seminar meeting. It must be completed ONE MONTH before graduation and filed in the Certification Office, Recitation Hall. For students planning to teach outside of Pennsylvania, contact should be made with the Certification office in the state in which employment is desired.

Page 18: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

STUDENT TEACHER GUIDELINES:

1. Students must not take courses while student teaching due to the work load demands associated with fulltime teaching responsibilities.

2. Students should take no more than one private lesson and one ensemble during the student teaching semester. Students who wish to take more than one ensemble may do so, as long as student teaching remains the priority and does not suffer due to a student's inability to balance the additional performance demands with student teaching workload.

3. Students must select ensemble/lesson times that do not conflict with the teaching day 7:30 am-4:15 pm. Students will take into consideration travel time between the school and the university.

4. Senior music education students may not schedule their senior recital during the semester they student teach.

Music Education Senior - No more than twenty minutes of music in the non-student teaching semester.

Those majors who wish to have additional time beyond the allotted fifteen minutes must apply for permission through the appropriate department chair. There can be no guarantee of extra time on regularly scheduled recitals or of added dates. Additional time depends on availability of Swope Hall Auditorium and the number of requests received. General Student Recitals are held in Swope Hall Auditorium. Students from all departments sign for ten minute performance slots, after approval from their applied music teacher. Senior Music Education students may not schedule their senior recital during the semester they student teach.

As an audience member, you are part of the performance. Your respect for the performers is shown through your attentiveness during the performance and your applause at the end of each composition. Performers as well as other audience members are easily distracted by noises and movements. Please conduct yourself as you would want an audience to act during your performances.

Please arrive 10 minutes early. The faculty member will stop granting recital credit 5 minutes before the concert so everyone can be seated for the start of the performance. No exceptions.

Please turn off all cell phones, and electronic devices prior to entering the performance venue. Text messaging and phone use is not acceptable concert etiquette.

If you are taking notes for a class, please sit near the back of the concert hall and be as quiet as possible.

Please remove caps and hats prior to entering the hall. Please dress appropriately. Shirt and shoes are required. Please do not wear perfume or cologne to performances. Many concert goers are allergic to strong scents.

Your applause shows your appreciation of the music, and recognizes the effort of the performer. It is appropriate to keep applauding until all solo and chamber ensemble performers exit the stage. Larger ensembles and conductors will exit the stage after appropriate applause. If the performers return for a curtain call you should consider continuing the applause until the performers have left the stage.

Since applause is part of the concert, you will not receive recital credit if you leave before the performers have exited the stage and the house lights have been raised.

No flash photography except during applause. Do not enter or exit the concert hall during performances.

Any faculty member may dismiss an audience member at any time for inappropriate behavior.

UNIVERSITY EXCUSED ABSENCES POLICY

I. Students participating in University-sanctioned events such as, but not limited to, the Marching Band and NCAA athletic events, will be granted an excused absence(s) by the respective faculty members for class periods missed. Students will be granted the privilege of taking, at an alternative time to be determined by the professor, scheduled examinations or quizzes that will be missed. The professor will designate such times prior to the event and the make up should be as soon as possible following the missed class. Professors can provide a fair alternative to taking the examination or quiz that will be missed. Students must recognize that some activities cannot be directly made up (e.g., a laboratory, group presentation, off-campus experience), and faculty will arrange a fair alternative to the missed work. Students must submit original documentation on University letterhead signed by the activity director, coach, or advisor detailing the specifics of the event in advance. Specific requirements include the following:

1. Responsibility for meeting academic requirements rests with the student.

2. Students are expected to notify their professors as soon as they know they will be missing class due to a University-sanctioned event.

3. Students are expected to complete the work requirement for each class and turn in assignments due on days of the event prior to their due dates unless other arrangements are made with the professor.

4. If a scheduled event is postponed or canceled, the student is expected to go to class.

5. Students are not excused from classes for practice on nonevent days.

The following are specifics for the student athlete:

1. The student athlete is expected, where possible, to schedule classes on days and at hours that do not conflict with athletic schedules.

2. Athletes are not excused from classes for practice or training-room treatment on nongame days.

II. West Chester University recognizes required (non-voluntary) service in the United States military including the Pennsylvania National Guard as a legitimate reason to miss up to the equivalent of 2 weeks during a 15-week semester. Service members must submit a copy of their orders to the Registrar's Office. The Registrar's Office will communicate with respective faculty members and the student will be granted an excused absence(s) for the class periods missed. All points covered in part I of this policy including make-up work and specific requirements 1-4 also apply. Service members required to miss more than the equivalent of 2 weeks during a 15-week semester can withdraw from the term in a non-punitive manner in accordance with Pennsylvania

Page 22: ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020 - wcupa.edu

state law. Students are expected to work closely with faculty and the Registrar’s Office to ensure their academic success. Students in programs with external accrediting bodies must also be aware that there may be attendance requirements that cannot be made up.

III. In the event of a student's unplanned medical emergency, including serious health conditions as outlined in the Family and Medical Leave Act, or the death of a student's immediate family member, faculty members are expected to provide, within reason, an opportunity for students to make up work. Students are responsible for providing proper documentation and will work with respective faculty members to make up course work as described in part I of this policy. Students are encouraged to contact Student Assistance for additional information. IV. Consistent with guidelines set forth by the Family and Medical Leave Act, students who become parents of new children or have children with serious health conditions that require the student-parent to miss up to the equivalent of 2 weeks during a 15-week semester shall be given an excused absence for the courses that are missed. Students will work with respective faculty members to make up course work as described in part I of this policy. Students required to miss more than the equivalent of 2 weeks during a 15-week semester can withdraw from the term up until the term-withdraw deadline. Students required to miss more than one semester should also refer to Admissions policy on consecutive non-enrollment. Students are encouraged to contact Student Assistance for additional information. V. West Chester University recognizes excused absences in accordance with federal and state legal statutes including but limited to compliance with jury duty, subpoenas, and notices of deposition. Such excused absences will be dealt with as described in part I of this policy.

STUDENT ADVOCATE ADA ACCOMODATIONS

In an effort to assist students who either receive or may believe they are entitled to receive accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the University has appointed a student advocate to be a contact for students who have questions regarding the provision of their accommodations or their right to accommodations. The advocate will assist any students who may have questions regarding these rights.

Ms. Lynn M. Klingensmith, Director of Social Equity/Title IX Coordinator, has been designated in this role. Any students who may need assistance with their rights to accommodations should contact her at [email protected].

POLICY NOTES AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION

All academic policies can be found in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs or on the CAPC Policies page.

Award Z grades to students who stop attending classes but do not drop or withdraw during the semester. This information is important to the Financial Aid Office, so they maintain compliance with the U.S. Government Policy for awarded aid.

When posting student information, use a system to identify students other than their social security number or WCU ID number.

Transfer students must earn 60 credits at WCU in order to qualify for honors at graduation.

Students must complete MAT 1XX, WRT 120, and WRT 2XX by the time they have earned 60 credits. Transfer students entering with 60 or more credits should be urged to complete these requirements during their first semester at WCU.

WRITING EMPHASIS COURSES

All students who enter with fewer than 40 credits must take at least three (3) approved writing emphasis courses at West Chester. Transfer students who enter with 40-70 credits must take two (2) writing emphasis courses. Students who transfer more than 70 credits must take one (1) writing emphasis course. Each writing emphasis course may simultaneously fulfill another degree requirement. If an Interdisciplinary Course is listed as "IW", it may also be used to fulfill the writing emphasis requirement. At least one Writing Emphasis Course must be taken at the 300-400 level.
