General Information

• All Academy students are concurrently enrolled as full-time students in Loudoun County Public Schools, attending the Academies of Loudoun and their home high school on alternating days

• Transportation is provided by LCPS to the Academies of Loudoun (LCPS Transportation Office)

• Students admitted to Advanced AET or MATA will be required to work very closely with home HS counselors and Academies counselors to schedule remaining graduation requirements for their home school schedule, this might include making use of Virtual Loudoun options

Students at the AET will develop their creative and enterprising capacities, engage in engineering and research, and have the opportunity to pursue a rich, well-rounded high school experience.

Advanced AET is a 2-year program commitment (11th & 12th grade).

Advanced AET Pathways

When applying, applicants will select ONE of the following:

AET EngineeringDesigned for students who wish to engage in an intensive study of engineering, including the engineering design process. All AET Engineering students will be required to complete multiple design challenge projects while attending the AET.

AET Information Technology (IT)Designed for students who wish to engage in an intensive study of computer science and information technologies. All AET IT students will be required to design, develop and conduct multiple CS research projects while attending the AET.

• Successful completion of Math Analysis by the end of 10th grade (students who plan to take Math Analysis in summer school after 10th grade or through Virtual Loudoun-Term 3 cannot be considered)

• Successful completion of 2 science credits by the end of 10th grade (we recommend Research Earth Science and/or Research Biology and/or Research Chemistry)

• Student in good standing, passed all courses, review of academic record

• PSAT scores* (NMSQT)

• Writing Prompt scores

• Interest Statement scores

• AET pathway choice

*Applicants without a PSAT score report will be required to take a mathematics assessment.

This pathway explores aspects of Health Informatics to include the history of health information technology (IT), the Electronic Health Record (EHR), ethical and privacy issues, and cybersecurity and data breaches. Students will be introduced to the various technology and trends that affect the healthcare industry.

HVAC

Moviemaking

Students learn camera operation, news reporting, editing, scriptwriting, audio production techniques, production planning, the business of video production, studio and control room operation, basic marketing, and production techniques.

Veterinary Science

Students will learn medical terminology, animal anatomy and physiology, safety and sanitation, parasitology, posology, nutrition, breeds, professional conduct, office management, and emerging technologies in animal agriculture.

Biomedical Technology

Introducing a New pathway starting in the Fall of 2019

This pathway focuses on various Biomedical techniques ranging from Bioprocessing and DNA analysis, to medicine, biomechanical systems, and the environment. Students completing the 2-year sequence gain foundational knowledge and skills appropriate for a variety of medical-related career paths in the field of biotechnology. They are introduced to laboratory procedures that support bioscience research and practice, and they investigate safety, quality assurance, and the ethical concerns associated with the field of biomedical technology.

Computer & Digital

Animation

Produce computer-generated models, characters, and animations using high-end software. Study the production pipeline from story idea to final render.

CIED provides students with a foundation of skills needed for manufacturing and engineering in today’s “high tech” workplace. The course focus is on hands-on, task-based activities where students learn and practice industrial skills. Students are introduced to SolidWorks, Mastercam and mill/lathe CNC programming.

Cosmetology Learn the skills necessary to develop job-entry requirements and obtain licensure as a cosmetologist by performing the services expected in a professional salon environment.

Cybersecurity

Enter the world of computer technology and gain practical experience in assembling a computer system. Students will install, configure, and secure various operating systems. Students will troubleshoot computers and peripherals and use system tools and diagnostic software. They develop skills in computer networking and resource sharing. In addition, students explore the relationships between internal and external computer components.
