BOWLING ALLEY: In 1962, Frank Falcaro built this 24-lane

bowling alley on Moore’s Lane near Route 25. Later it became

a storage place for Jernick Moving Company and the Cata-

combs, a youth center run by the Southold Town Narcotics

Guidance Council. When it was consumed by fire in the 1970s

many local families lost cherished possessions. Jernick Moving

and Storage still operates at this location.

In the March issue of the Peconic Bay Shopper, Once Upon a Town mentioned the early general stores that were a feature of each hamlet in Southold Town. In the mean-time I came across a picture of the general store in Peconic owned by Charles Case, who lived with his family on the second floor apartment over the store. Mrs. Case was the daughter of Captain Henry Green whose last command was of the ship Sabina, which in 1849 brought supplies to the gold fields of California. The captain’s handsome home was on Blubber Row in Peconic. This is not a good reproduction but one should be able to see the mixing bowls on the top shelf as well as the pot-bellied stove that warmed the shop.

AMPLIFICATION: The March Peconic Bay Shopper mentioned what a commercial hub Orient used to be with several hotels, much activity on the docks, a blacksmith’s shop and a shoemaker’s shop as well as a couple of general stores. This view of the Pier at Orient predates 1915. Note all the barrels in the left foreground ready to be transported by boat.

MAYOR AND BUSINESSMAN: Arthur Levine served two terms as Greenport Village mayor and also ran the business founded by his father, Samuel Levine, in 1928. It was the Arcade Department Store on Front Street. Earlier, Samuel and his brother Julius had a grocery store on Main Street that later became Clinton A. Hommel Plumbing and Heating. SOUTHOLD DRUG STORES: The first verifiable druggist in the hamlet of Southold was Henry G. Howell. According to Rosalind Case Newell’s book Rose Remembers, H.G. Howell’s Drug Store and home was built on the south side of the Main Road in 1882. He was still operating the drug store in 1903, and was succeeded by Millard Golder. David Rothman bought the Howell building in 1924 as a general store and today (2014) it is Rothman’s Department Store. Incidentally, Millard Golder’s son, Bill, became a pharmacist and was in business with Donald Scott on the opposite side of the Main Road. Before the Southold Pharmacy was established, a little over fifty years ago, Mr. Scott worked at John F. Kramer’s Drug Store in a building now owned by the Rothman family. Thanks to Margaret Hagerman and Barbara Santacroce who both worked at Kramer’s for their help.
