1. Introduction

1.1. Acapela’s Text-To-Speech product range

Acapela Group is a global player on the speech market providing a wide range of multilingual Text-To-Speech (TTS) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) solutions covering most of the market needs. Please visit our website http://www.acapela-group.com for more information on our wide range of products.

1.2. The technologies

Generally speaking, a Text to Speech algorithm is composed of two main software modules:

• The text processor (Natural Language Processor – NLP) converts the text into a phonetic representation together with required information to generate the appropriate intonation;

• The speech synthesizer converts this phonetic representation of text into a speech signal.

These two software modules use databases to perform their assigned operation. All databases are language dependent. Databases used by the speech synthesizer are also language and voice dependent.

1.2.1. The Text Processor The Text processor performs the analysis of the input text and converts this text into a sequence of phonemes combined with prosodic information. This software code is language independent for most of the Indo-European languages. The databases contain all information specific to the language. The Text Processor module is composed of:

• Pre-processor: analyses the text and defines each text unit (word), it extracts the

numbers, dates, abbreviations. • Phonetizer and dictionaries: converts each text unit received from the pre-

This technology is available through the products Infovox 2xx and Kernel (Microsoft Windows only). For more information about those products, please contact our sales team ([email protected])

technique like the Babel’s patented Multi Band Resynthesis Overlap Add (MBROLA) systems. This approach allows spectral smoothing of the concatenation points, producing a much more natural voice than with other concatenative systems. The product using this technology are marked with letters HD (High Density). With this technology, only one instance of each speech unit (diphone) is stored in the database and signal processing (MBROLA) is applied to the units to modify its duration and pitch curve.

and natural-sounding voice, achieving a superb quality level unequalled before. This new-generation TTS solution significantly improves intelligibility and listening comfort of speech output. HQ (High Quality) or HQM (High Quality Medium size) is added to the name of the products using a synthesizer based on Unit Selection Speech Synthesis. Here, the approach is to try to find a unit in the database that almost matches the needed right duration and pitch curve and to apply to it as little as possible signal processing. HQ and HQM voices are based on the same technology, but the voice database size of a HQM voice is smaller than a HQ voice by using a bigger compression rate. The quality of HQ voices is better than for HQM.

1.3. HD and HQ/HQM voices

While HD and HQ/HQM voices are based on different technologies, they are based on the same software architecture, called “BabTTS” in the sequel. Hence, the development of an application integrating HD or HQ/HQM voices is identical from the developer’s point of view. Only the selection of the voice will determine the underlying technology.

1.4. About Manuals

1.4.1. Differences between operating systems Acapela Multimedia 6 contains some small differences between Microsoft Windows, linux based systems and Mac OS versions. In the following sections, such specificities are highlighted by 3 different icons:

• for Microsoft Windows family

• for Linux based systems

• for Apple Mac OS X

1.4.2. Documentation

The documentation is divided in several documents:

User Guide, this document, describing the installation procedure (section 2) after a brief introduction to the products (section 1). The Software Development Kit comes with a “Type-and-Talk” demonstration (Microsoft Windows only) which is described in section 3. Section 4 explains how licenses are managed by Acapela Multimedia. Section 5 introduces the tags you can embed in text. Section 6 describes how to handle specific pronunciations through out the Lexicon Editor. Finally, Section 7 describes how to personalize voices to your needs throughout the Voice Manager (Microsoft Windows only).

Developers Guide

o The main document is Acapela Multimedia Software Development Kit (AcaMul-Sdk-6.pdf) which describes the BabTTS API. It initiates the developer to the basic mechanism involved in the development of applications in section 2 (Getting Started), section 3 (Creating your first Application with BabTTS API), section 4 (Using Callback). 3. Testing the TTS engine

This chapter presents a simple way to check that the package has been correctly installed and explains how to quickly have a demonstration of our text to speech technologies.

3.1. Testing the TTS engine in Microsoft Windows

3.1.1. Playing a text

Launch AcaDemo.exe from the start menu (under Start\All programs\Acapela Group\Acapela Multimedia v6\bin\TTS Demonstrator)

If BabTTS is correctly installed, the demonstration software AcaDemo appears on your screen. Select a voice (and thus a language) in the dialog box.

Type a text and click on the "play" button . You hear the synthesized text on the audio output (headphones or speakers). The word synchronization is shown on the text with a blue highlighting.

Press "stop" button to halt the audio output.

It is possible to stop temporally the speech by pressing "pause". Click on “pause” again to resume.

3.1.2. Opening text files

Press the "open a new file" button to load the content of a text file into the edit box.

For easy demonstration purpose, if you check the box "Auto Load", the content of the file language.txt will be automatically loaded. For example, if you use the voice Julie22k (language=French), the file French.txt (in the “demotext” directory) is loaded if this file exists, otherwise nothing happens.

3.1.3. Using the virtual keyboard

AcaDemo has a useful feature if you want to write some special characters into the edit box, specially when testing languages using different charset of the base charset of your system. To open this tool,

press the "virtual keyboard" button .

Choose a special character (a "magnifier square" shows you the pointed character) and double-click to insert it in the edit box.

3.1.4. Adapting Parameters

3.1.4.1 Pitch

If the user chooses a HD voice (MBROLA technology), he has the possibility to change the pitch. Each voice has a default internal pitch ( +/- 180 – 190 Hz for female voices, 100 – 110 Hz for male voices). The pitch can be modified in a range from 50% to 200% of the default pitch. The actual pitch fluctuates above and below this setting, following the prosodic rules.

With a HQ voice (Unit Selection technology), users cannot modify the default pitch.

3.1.4.2 Speed

Each voice has a default speed (180-190 words / minute, depending on the voice). Users can modify the speed setting from 33% to 300 % of the default speed.

3.1.4.3 Frequency

This information is read-only. It represents the sampling rate of the voice. For example, Julie22k has a sampling rate of 22050 Hz.

3.2.2. Testing the Speech Synthesis Manager installation

You can quickly check that the package has been correctly installed by using the integrated Speech capability of Mac OS X.

Open “System Preferences” and choose “Speech”

Select an Acapela Multimedia TTS Voice. The name of our voices in the speech manager is composed like this: “XXXXXX Acapela Multimedia HQ/HQM/HD” where XXXXXX is the name of the voice and HQ/HQM/HD refers to the quality of the voice. Press “Play”. If you hear an “evaluation” message (like “This is an evaluation version of Acapela Group Text to Speech Synthesizer”), the installation is OK, but you don’t have a valid license. Go to Section 4 and read how to activate 30 days demo license or import a time-limited license file sent to you by Acapela Group. If you have a valid license, you will hear a “voice presentation” like “Hi, I’m Heather, the female American English speech synthesis voice from Acapela. Efficient, fast and of very high quality, why not try me out with yours own words!”

4. Text Tags Acapela Multimedia uses the "Microsoft SAPI 4 tag pattern" to read at runtime some specific information in the text.

4.1. Exceptions

The only exception is if you are using the SAPI5 layers. If you do so, you will have to use XML Tags. Please refer to the document “Supported XML SAPI 5 tags” (AcaMul-Sapi5-6.pdf) for more information on those.

If you are using Acapela Multimedia through the Speech Synthesis Manager (Cocoa Speech Synthesis API or Carbon Speech Synthesis API), you should use in priority the Embedded Speech Commands. Please refer to the document “Apple Speech Synthesis Support” (AcaMul-SSM-OSX-6.pdf) for more information on those.

4.2. Text Tags Syntax

Sapi4 tags follow these general rules of syntax:

All tags begin and end with a backslash character ( \ ).

The backslash character is not allowed within a tag.

Tags are case-insensitive. For example \RST\ is the same as \rst\ or \Rst\.

Tags are white-space-dependent. For example, \Rst\ is not the same as \ Rst \.

To include a backslash character in tagged text, but outside a tag, use a double backslash ( \\ ). If user wishes to speak a filename as "c:\windows\system\test.txt", then it should double up the backslashes (e.g., "c:\\windows\\system\\test.txt").

When the engine encounters a tag it does not understand, the tag is simply ignored (not read).

Tags are persistent from one text to another. For example, if the \spd=150\ is present in a text, all following texts will be spoken with a speed of 150 words per minute, until a reset tag is encountered or language is changed.

Page 29: Acapela Multimedia 6 User Guide - narod.rutts-alenka.narod.ru/pdf/acamul-user-6.pdf · 2013-04-07 · Date : 26/03/07 Page : 2/49 Acapela Multimedia TTS User guide AcaMul-User-6 Document

4.3. BabTTS supported tags

Here is the list of tags supported by BabTTS. All these tags are correctly processed with a HD voice (MBROLA technology). Due to the unit selection technology, some tags are not processed with a HQ voice.

\Pau=number\

This tag inserts in the speech a pause of the specified number of milliseconds.

Example: "I am \Pau=2000\ ready." a pause of 2 seconds is introduced after the word "am". The algorithm is limited to pauses of 10 seconds

\Prn="phonetic string"\

With this tag, a user can synthesize a specific pronunciation inside a text. The phonetic string is composed of phonemes followed by space characters (phonetic alphabet is language dependant). This tag is only suitable for inserting single word into the text. Unpredictable errors (mainly prosody) can occur when inserting greater units.

Example: "I will say: \Prn=h @ l @U\." is equivalent to "I will say: hello.".

Remark: This tag has not the same meaning in BabTTS than in the standard SAPI norm, it doesn’t apply the same pronunciation for future words.

\Mrk=number\

This tag indicates a user bookmark in the text.

When BabTTS encounters this tag, it notifies the user's application (see chapter "Using CallBacks" in the Developer Guide - AcaMul-Sdk-6.pdf). \Mrk=0\ is reserved. This tag has no use in the AcaDemo application.

\Spd=number\

This tag sets the baseline average talking speed of the voice to the specified number of words per minute. Each voice has a default speed (about 180 words per minute, depending of the voice). Call \Rst\ to reset to the default speed. Range: 1/3 to 3x the default speed (typically \spd=60\ to \spd=539\.

\RSpd=number\

This tag sets the relative speed. 100 is the default speed (about 180 words per minute, depending of the voice). Call \Rst\ to reset to the default speed.

Rmk: Not processed with HQ voices.

\Pit=number\

This tag sets the baseline pitch of the voice to the specified value in Hertz. The actual pitch fluctuates above and below this baseline following the prosodic rules. Default is about 180-190 Hz for a woman and 100-110 Hz for a man (voice dependent). Range: 50 % to 200% of the base pitch. \pit=70\ will have no effect on a female HD voice, but will work on a male voice.

Rmk: Not processed with HQ voices.

\RPit=number\

This tag sets the relative pitch. 100 is the default pitch of the voice. (Min 50, max 200)

Rmk: Not processed with HQ voices.

\Rst\

This tag resets the engine to the default settings for the current mode.

Note that this tag has not effect to settings changed with BabTTS_SetSettings.

\RmS=number\

Sets reading mode to spelling out each letter of each word (number=1), or turns it off (number=0).

\RmW=number\

Sets reading mode to leaving audible pauses between each word (number=1), or turns it off (number=0).

\Equ=Preset\

Change the equalizer preset at runtime. You can manage the list of presets with the Voice Manager, see Chapter 7 for more information about Presets (Windows only)

\Equ=val1;val2;val3;val4\

where val1, val2, val3, val4 are in a range from -100 to 100 and apply to the frequency bands of 275Hz, 2.2kHz, 5kHz and 8.3kHz, respectively.

\Vce=charact=value\

Instructs the engine to change the speaking voice, according to the specified characteristics. The pitch, speed, volume, etc. revert to the defaults for the new voice

charact represents the name of the characteristic and can be one of the followings :

• Language=language. Requests the engine speak in the specified language (Language can be arabic, belgiandutch, brazilian, british, canadianfrench, czech, danish, dutch, french, german, italian, norwegian, portuguese, spanish, swedish, turkish, usenglish, icelandic, finnish, americanspanish. Example: \vce=language=Spanish\

• Speaker=speakername. Specifies the speaker value of the voice. !!! Speaker Name is different from Voice Name. Heather22k, Heather8k and Heather22kM are Voice Names. Heather is the Speaker Name. Example: \vce=speaker=ryan\

Note: The Vce tag only works for voices with the same sampling rate. It cannot be used for changing voices designed for different sampling rates.

5. Acapela Multimedia TTS License Acapela Multimedia TTS uses a licensing system that allows a fine control of the resources and provides the stability and reliability that is needed in a professional application. Note that this licensing system is the same for HD and HQ voices. This licensing scheme is based on a unique license identity, which can be provided from different locations (dongle, computers, …) and a license file describing the type and information of the license associated with the license identity (number of concurrent channels, authorized features, remaining days for evaluation,…). This concept permits the Babel TTS system to be compliant with all kind of applications you expect. During the development process, you will probably use licence files that are “computer” locked while in the final product, you will have to bundle the TTS engine within your products. In order to get a working license, you will have to use the License Manager. Consult the sales department ([email protected]) to determine which type of license best suits your needs.

5.1. The License Identity

5.1.1. Site Authorization With this kind of identity, the License Manager first computes a primary key that will uniquely identify your computer, based on several hardware components. Once you send your primary key belonging with your requests, you will receive a license file that will allow the BabTTS to work on your particular computer. This file will be locked to your computer and will not work with any other computer.

5.1.2. Dongle Authorization

For advanced applications (like telecom), the need to have a robust system is a priority. The software site identity is not relevant for such applications, as it implies the creation of a new license file each time the application is moved from one computer to another. The hardware key (or dongle) is independent of the architecture of the computer you use thanks to a unique identifier stored in this hardware key. The license file can be easily and safely saved or copied, which means that moving the license to another computer is as simple as copying a file and moving the hardware key between two computers. Contact us for more information.

5.1.3. Bundling

This special licensing scheme is for CDROM distributed applications where the final user has no relation with Acapela Group and/or his local distributors.

Page 33: Acapela Multimedia 6 User Guide - narod.rutts-alenka.narod.ru/pdf/acamul-user-6.pdf · 2013-04-07 · Date : 26/03/07 Page : 2/49 Acapela Multimedia TTS User guide AcaMul-User-6 Document

5.2. The License File

The license file is the complement to the license identity and is used to verify the validity of this identity. This file contains also information about:

• The voices you are allowed to use in your application

• The number of channels (for telecom applications)

• The features you are allowing to use (see below)

• The remaining days after which the license will become invalid (depending of your license agreement) (not applicable for bundling licenses)

The features allowed are depending of the type of license agreement you have:

• Saving the produced speech to files

• Retrieving the produced buffers at runtime (telecom based license)

• Retrieving generated phonemes info at runtime

• Authorizing the user to work with the SAPI 4 or the SAPI 5 layers

6. User lexicons

6.1. Definition

When using the synthesizer, you might want to change the way a word is spoken. This happens often when you have names, acronyms, foreign words or other peculiar words that do not follow the default pronunciation rules. Creating a user lexicon (or user dictionary) gives you the opportunity to set the pronunciation of a word exactly the way you like it. A user lexicon consists of a list of names (which works as a lookup string) and translations. For instance, let’s suppose that we want the Text-to-Speech Engine to actually speak the sentence ”as soon as possible” every time the acronym ”ASAP” is encountered in the text. To achieve this, you have to add to the active user lexicon file an entry whose name is ”ASAP” and whose translation is ”as soon as possible”. The translation string can either be specified as text or as phonetic text, by preceding it with phonetic prefix character (#) and using the phonetic symbols defined for the language in use.

New in version >= 6.010 For simplicity of use, a default lexicon is always created for each voice. This lexicon has the same name of the voice. If there is several account on your computer, each user will have its own lexicons.

These lexicons are installed in "C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Application Data\Acapela Group\Acapela Multimedia\UserLexicons\" and have the name of the voice + ."dic" (for example: Heather22k.dic). Each lexicon is created the first time a voice is loaded.

These lexicons are installed in "/Users/[UserName]/Library/Application Support/Acapela Multimedia/UserLexicons/" and have the name of the voice + ".dic" (for example: Heather22k.dic). Each lexicon is created the first time a voice is loaded (excepted for the user who has installed Acapela Multimedia where all lexicons were created during installation) Note: These default lexicons are different of the default user lexicons defined in § 6.3.4

6.2. Features of lexicons

• A lexicon is language dependent; it cannot be used with different languages. But inside the same language, different voices can share the same lexicons.

• Each voice can use as many lexicons as you want. You can define a list of default lexicons with the lexicon editor.

• You can add new entries by several ways :

o A “sounds like” method: the translation consists of a plain orthographic word that is pronounced as you want.

o A “Phonetic” input: By preceding the translation by ‘# ’, you can insert phoneme code (each separated by spaces) and expect a fine tuned pronunciation. See the language specific manual for more information about the phone set.

• If you want your user lexicons to be always loaded when starting the engine, you

have to defined them as “default ones” (see 6.3.4) • (New in version >= 6.010) The default lexicon for the voice is automatically loaded

and can be edited at any time using the lexicon editor.

It is located in "[Documents and Settings]\[UserName]\Application Data\Acapela Group\Acapela Multimedia\UserLexicons"

/Users/[UserName]/Library/Application Support/Acapela Multimedia/UserLexicons/

6.3.2. File Management

Create a new lexicon file for use with the language of the selected voice.

Open an existing lexicon file. Only lexicons compatible with the selected voice can be correctly open.

Save changes.

Save As… Permits to save changes using a different file name.

Remove the lexicon from the current list. The file is not deleted, only removed from the loaded list of the current mode.

Import a text file (ASCII) into lexicon. The text file can be in several formats. (tabulation, CSV,…)

Export entries in current lexicon to a text file (ASCII) The text file can be saved in several formats (tabulation, CSV, …)

Open an information dialog editor that permits to changes information and properties of the selected dictionary.

Possible information are: • The name of dictionary

• Its version and revision (number of changes that occurred)

• The date of creation and last modification

• Properties of the dictionary (Read, write, password enabled, …)

6.3.3. Editing Entries

Create a new entry in the active user lexicon file.

The name of the entry is taken from the “word” edit box and its translation is take from “translation” box

Delete the current entry

Play the entry (or the translation).

When the “Auto Speak” is checked, any character input in the

translation box will play it, for easy correction.

6.3.4. Other functions

Show the list of entries registered in the active user lexicon file. Selecting an entry will adapt the word and translation edit box for

easy editing.

Show the list of phonemes of the language with some examples. Double-clicking on an example will play it for listening reference.

Show the default list for the selected voice. You can add dictionaries that will be loaded by Acapela Multimedia each time you open a new

instance of the voice. Higher dictionaries have priority if the same entry exists.

and As these systems uses a BabTts.conf file in XML format instead of the windows registry, this xml file is loaded only one time per process (to increase the runtime performances). So, after setting a default dictionary with the Lexicon Editor, be sure you have restart your application, otherwise this default dictionary will not be loaded by your voices (even if you close the TTS channel and reopen it, it will re-use the BabTts.conf loaded at the start of process).
