2014 started out in the best possible way with the addition of the following volunteers to our program: Cardiomedex Inc, Rahnuma

Saiyed OD, Abha Malhotra MD, John Brusky MD, Kong Her PA-C, Gordon Mortensen MD, Jeffrey Quintana MD, and Gerardo

Perez Espindola DPM. Joyce Aspinall RN joined the onsite Bur lington Clinic.

A very welcome boost came to us from Atonement Lutheran Church and Our Saviors Lutheran

Church who joined together to form a Ministry of Encouragement. Their visit to our office

with a plaque of appreciation and lunch was the kindest and most gracious of gestures.

The Affordable Care Act kicked into full gear with 4 of our staff passing the training to become

Certified Application Counselors. Over the next 6 months 229 patients were assisted in obtaining

BadgerCare+ and 44 individuals were helped with Marketplace plans.

YPR (Young Professionals of Racine) announced that Health Care Network would be one of 3 non profits for whom they would be

collecting supplies throughout 2014.

The annual Give Kids a Smile Day remains a strong event thanks to the partnership with the Racine County Dental Society. On February 7,

2014 Nichole Elcano DDS, Jerry Oksiuta DDS, Adam Palmer DDS, and Ric Palmer DDS volunteered onsite to give dental exams.

With the help of additional volunteers: Janie Barrientez, Krista Cocroft, Laura Martin, Crystal Potrikus, and Stacy Scott 48 children were

screened. In addition, the following dentists volunteered to provide follow up treatment to 43 children that resulted in 79 appointments: Sam

2014 in Review

Ministry of Encouragement Presentation

The agency was delighted to add a new partner to our effort when St. Louis Catholic Church in Sturte-

vant took up a collection of supplies which resulted in a bonanza of over the counter medication and

office supplies.

Word that the Western Racine County Health Dept. would be closing at the end of 2014 found the

agency in search of a new site to hold its Burlington Outreach Clinic

Health Care Network welcomes Hoda Ahmadi MD and Dustin Brown MD who joined the program.

The agency joins the community in mourning the loss of James Simonds MD from the Wheaton Franciscan

Union Grove Clinic.

Dr. Simonds along with his wife Dr. Lisa Simonds joined our program upon starting their practice in Union Grove. Dr. Jim never hesitated

to see our patients and he was beloved by all. He will be missed by many for a long, long time.

April brought the expansion of BadgerCare+. The agency assisted all patients below 100% of poverty with the application, but added

patients above 100% of poverty that lost their BadgerCare.

The Greater Racine Mammogram Coalition receives a grant of $110,117 from Susan G. Komen Southeast Wisconsin due to the

partnering of Health Care Network, WFHC - All Saints, Wisconsin Well Women Program of Racine County - City of Racine Health

Dept., the Jane Cremer Foundation, Aurora Health Care, and Transitional Living Services. Working collaboratively, Racine

County no longer ranks last among the counties of SE Wisconsin for the number of women who get

mammograms.

As part of the Lenten offerings of Scared Heart Catholic Church, $2,707.54 was collected and

donated to the care of Health Care Network patients.

The agency’s fundraiser “The Little Black Dress Through the Ages” sponsored by Racine Dental

Group on May 2, 2014 raises a record $18, 998 for a women’s luncheon. See photos elsewhere

United Way of Racine County announces its grants including $121,000 to Health Care Network.

The agency’s Annual meeting was held on June 19, 2014. New officers for 2014-2015 are President—

John Gates, Vice President—Dave Perkins, Treasurer —Sue Tran, and Secretary—Elaine Sutton

Ekes. Elected to the Board for 3 year terms are Della Alvarez and Debbie Weyers. Sadly, but

with much gratitude we bid farewell to retiring Board members: Chip Brewer, Jhon Freddy Correa, Jim

Henderson, Steve Mueller, and Michele Randall.

(left) It’s hard to find an area that Jim Henderson did not assist with during his term. He chaired several committees and ultimately served as

President. He involved himself personally with every activity and fundraiser in which the agency was involved whether it be the women’s

luncheon or the staff holiday party.

Multitalented Michele Randall is as comfortable and capable reviewing the agency’s financial records as she is planning the next fundraiser.

She served as both Treasurer of the Board and Chair of the

Fundraising Committee. We are grateful to Michele for continuing to serve on the Fundraising Committee past her Board term.

Chip Brewer was depended on for his wise counsel. He could have wr itten the chapter on how to Chair a

Nominating Committee. His thorough work ensures quality leadership for years to come. He maintained all his

commitments despite sharing his time between Racine and Florida after his retirement.

Every non profit agency needs the expertise of a human resources professional. Steve Mueller lent his skills to

that area throughout his term on the Board as Chair of the Personnel Committee and accepted the ultimate lead-

ership position of President during his final year.

Jhon Feddy Correa (not pictured) is well known for his advocacy

on issues related to the Hispanic community. His voice is an im-

portant addition to the community conversation with this growing population.

For many years, Toteros brought smiles to the faces of their customers with

their Italian delights. With the closing of the business they again brought

joy by raffling off the last piece of lasagne and donating the proceeds to Health Care Network Inc. It is

an honor to be selected by this Racine institution.

We are grateful to have Shayan Rayani MD join the program

this quarter.

There was no summer slow down. The agency found itself in a whirl wind of exciting activities.

We had our first experience working at the Ironman Triathlon. It was a beautiful day at the lake-

Italian Fest never disappoints not only in offer ing a weekend of fun but in Roma Lodge’s generosity to the

community. It is with humble pride that we accepted their contribution of $3,000. (right)

We can never say enough about First Presbyterian Church (our 1st home). Each Music & More concert seems to

out do itself and the attendees generously made offerings that resulted in a donation of $1,600 during the final

concert of the season.

In the midst of all the outside activities, Debra Ross was hired as a dental assistant. Her extensive experience has

already proved her as invaluable to the agency’s dental department.

Much needed equipment was made available to us through several long time supporters.

ful to Marilyn Rothschild for coming to our aid with its purchase much to the delight

We also have a new Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) thanks to a generous anonymous donor. We are

now fully equipped with an updated model in the event of

an emergency.

It is never a surprise to find our volunteers listed in the Journal Times Best of Racine County issue. Volunteers

listed in the 2014 issue are Lawrence Platt MD (Eye Clinic of Racine), John Warren OD (Warren Eye Care),

DJ Kontra MD (DJ Kontra MD & Associates) in the Best of Eye Care category, Paul Durbin MD (WFHC

- All Saints) and David Zablotney MD (Aurora Health Center) in the category of Best Doctor , Kimberly

Kind-Bauer DDS (Kind Dentistry) and Earl Newton DDS (Racine Dental Group) in the category of Best

Dentist.

The walls of the clinic got a much needed facelift when volunteers descended on our office as part of United Way of Racine County’s Day of

Caring on 9-13-14.

Alma Garay and Alice Serratos complete their State and Federal recer tification to serve as Cer tified Ap-

plication Counselors for the Marketplace which opens November 15th.

The Lab at St. Mary’s Hospital in conjunction with the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - All Saints Foundation

again sponsors the Wreath & Tree Raffle with proceeds to Health Care Network. To date (not including 2014)

funds raised from this event total $13,336.

Barb Tylenda is honored for her 25 1/2 years of service and Alison Sergio is officially welcomed on Novem-

ber 8th in front of a capacity crowd at Wingspread.

We again honor the legacy of J. Vernon & Elmyra Steinle who through their foundation is the agency’s single largest donor.

You say goodbye…

When I accepted the position of Executive Director in 1989, I could never have imagined that I

would retire from the agency 25 1/2 years later – especially in light of being told that the job

would last 3 years! During that time there were many public policy changes which affected the

lives of the uninsured. Yet there were always those who fell between the cracks resulting in 190,000

health care appointments provided to our low-income, uninsured neighbors thanks to the im-

mense generosity of the medical and dental communities and the donors who supported them. It

was my privilege to work with all of you that made this possible. My deepest gratitude to everyone

who reached out to me over the last month. Your warm wishes, cards, gifts, reminiscings, laughs,

and even tears have left me with a lifetime of the best of memories.

Greetings! In October of this year I had the honor of joining Health Care Network as the new Exec-

utive Director after the retirement of Barb Tylenda. I was drawn to this agency by its rich history

and depth of impact that it has had on Racine County residents and I am intrigued by the im-

mense support by donors and volunteers that has carried this organization for 27 years! It has

absolutely been my pleasure to meet so many caring individuals who have given to Health Care

Network and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead as we continue to carry out our mis-

sion of providing health and dental care to those in need. I sincerely appreciate all of those who

have reached out to me over the past couple months. Your welcoming spirit has made this transi-

tion a smooth one.

Meet Alison Sergio

Alison Sergio joined Health Care Network on October 1, 2014 as

Executive Director. Previously, Alison spent 10 years at Rosalie Manor

Community & Family Services in Milwaukee in various roles including

Program Director and, most recently, Executive Director. Early in 2014,

Rosalie Manor merged with Pathfinders where Alison held the position of

Vice President of Family Engagement and Housing. Prior to her work at

Rosalie Manor, Alison was employed by La Causa, Inc. and 16th Street

Community Health Center in programmatic roles.

Alison completed an MBA from Cardinal Stritch University and a BS in

Social Work from UW-Milwaukee. For the past 14 years, she has been

creating curricula and teaches courses through the Child Welfare Training

Partnership at the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, University of

Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

In Memoriam By Barb Tylenda

Since our last newsletter, the community mourned the loss of community members whose families specifically designated Health Care Network as a memorial site.

We can never express strongly enough how humbled and grateful we are for these magnanimous gestures.

The newsletter was just going to print when news came of the passing of David C. Andersen. He was described by family and friends as

being a storyteller with a “booming laugh” and a “twinkle in his eye”. Health Care Network knew him for his in-kind donations. There are

many ways to assist the patients of the agency and David’s donations of supplies assisted us in stretching our precious dollars. We will

always be grateful that he assisted us in this special way.

There are few among us who live to 97 and even fewer whose passing is unexpected because of their good health. This is the enviable story

of Joseph “Biff” Fiorita. A lifetime Racine resident he was active until the end. I never met nor knew of Mr. Fiorita, but from the number of

people at the church the minute visitation began, I knew it was my misfortune. His many interesting hobbies and love of family made him

an engaging and admirable man.

When they talk about the Greatest Generation Janet Goodsell certainly lives up to the reputation. She was not only a wonderful wife and

mother, but very active in the community. She was kind and gracious and was the reason that the Racine Country Club Women’s Christmas

luncheon selected Health Care Network to be the recipient of their holiday collection. While still able, she always personally invited me to

the luncheon and was the perfect hostess in introducing me to everyone and making sure I felt welcome at her table.

Pat Holly made an impact on everyone she met. As an R.N., she not only possessed the technical skills and knowledge of nursing but

she was an active advocate for her patients. As a nurse with the Racine Health Dept she headed the Wisconsin Well Woman Program help-

ing underserved women get annual pap smears and mammograms. She wore her politics on her sleeve and whether you agreed with her or

not, she was always respected for her dedication and passion. On the personal side, she had an unrivaled sense of humor bringing joy and

laughter to everyone who knew her.

You need only look at a photo of Richard James to know he was a kindhearted man. Described as a “wonderful husband, father, grandfa-

ther, and great grandfather,” he truly was meant to be a gift with a December 24th birthday. When a family has no specific connection to our

agency, it is truly an honor to be selected for memorials.

We met Jeff Peterson through mutual friend Luann Wells. Over the years, Jeff became our friend too. Attending our fundraisers until his

diminishing health precluded further involvement. While his profession was fire fighting his personal challenges inspired him to active

participation in health issues having taught testicular self exam to numerous boys and men through Racine high schools and employee health

programs. Through his memorial gifts Jeff continues to contribute to the health of our community.

The contributions of Sylvia Quadracci to Health Care Network spans 25+ years. She was among our earliest supporters. She attended all of

our fundraisers until the most recent years, yet still remained active with us through her jewelry sales in which she donated the proceeds to

the agency. What a legacy to see so many women wearing Sylvia’s jewelry at the funeral as a tribute to her. Stories of her generosity and

the customer service given at the Sentry store she and her husband owned abound. She is a loss not only to her family, but the community as

well.

Idabelle Reider was one of the all time great moms. We know this as her daughter Kathryn Rouse has been a volunteer with Health

Care Network for nearly 26 years. We know where Kathryn inherited her kind, gracious, and giving ways. Even as Idabelle made her way

into her 90s, she would always be seen impeccably dressed (and with heels!), a smile on her face, and a kind word of greeting. She saw the

best in everyone - a trait we should all live up to in her memory.

No matter when we lose a loved one, we never feel we’ve had enough time with them. But when a spouse is lost at the young age of 58 we

can’t help but feel it is all the more unfair. Such is the loss of David Shalbrack taken from his family far too soon. Long after I retire, I will

be touched by his wife Kay’s story that while Dave was undergoing chemotherapy he met someone who was choosing between food and

healthcare. While he was battling his own serious health issue he was still thinking about others. His personal experience with this unin-

sured patient was the inspiration for the memorials designated to Health Care Network.
