Happy autumn, everyone. The cooler fallweather is helping somewhat with the airpollution we all have to breathe. Theamount of emissions remains the same, but the brown scum in the air is lessnoticeable as the summer daytime hightemperatures that “cook” the chemicalsinto smog are reduced.

Our city council revoked a natural gasdrilling permit for the first time thismonth (Star-Telegram, October 14) forwater usage infractions. There’s still noenforcement locally for toxic emissions.Chesapeake Energy has 30 days torequest permission to continue drilling bycomplying with city requirements. Thecity has two inspectors to check on allthe well sites. If you see problems like noemergency sign with phone numbers, trash, unpaved driving routes (ruts in thedirt), you can call them at 817-459-6661or 6593. For any chemical smells or airthat sickens you with headaches ornosebleeds, call the regional TCEQ officeat 817-588-5800 to report.

While it sometimes seems there’s noconcern for public health among any ofour state or local officials, some environ-mentally friendly laws did get throughthe legislature this year. Come and hearLuke Metzger, Director of EnvironmentTexas, tell us about how those lawshappened and what use you, yourchurch, schools and others can make ofthem to afford cleaner, greener energy, provide food for the hungry and othergood things. Luke will also tell us aboutefforts to support and improve parks, afavorite topic for ACC members. Wewant a large crowd to hear from Lukeso we are meeting in the communityauditorium of the Central Library for ourNovember 9 program. Come meet thespeaker at 6:30 pm. The program startsat the usual time, 7 pm. Invite yourfriends. And as John Dycus remindedme to say in our publicity announce-ments, the program is free.

Wildscape Update Wildscape Update Wildscape Update Wildscape Update Wildscape Update John DycusJohn DycusJohn DycusJohn DycusJohn Dycus

Valiant wildscape treewarriors apparentlyworked a miracle andsaved almost all of thetrees this summer.Watering teams cameevery morning to fillthe gator bags and

water other recently installed native plants.I have this vision of Danny Kocurek

dragging hoses around in the moonlightlike Bill Murray in “Caddyshack.”

Native plants must get water the firstcouple of summers for their roots to growdeep enough to withstand droughtconditions. In contrast, most non-nativesdon’t have deep roots and must becontinually watered. Some area cities are

limiting outdoor sprinkling to twice amonth, so this may be the time toreplace water-thirsty plants that didn’tsurvive the summer with the native plantsthat can take it.

Elsewhere in the ‘scape, work on thenew beds between the boulders and thesidewalk had to cease when the heatforced postponement until coolerweather. Well, that weather is here, andvolunteers are finishing planting.

Arlington Parks and Recreationoversaw installation of the boulders tostop the soil from eroding onto thesidewalk but would not allow digging (forplanting) because it’s too close to gaslines. Like telling Molly Hollar no wouldactually, you know, stop her.

She and a loyal band of hollarytessimply mounded soil up in front of theboulders — no digging required, nocomplaints from APR — and now they’remerrily planting Texas native bloomingperennials, shrubs, evergreen plants andeven small trees in these beds on the westside of the sidewalk starting at theparking lot.

What a treat this will be for visitors.Much wildscape traffic involves thesidewalks, so guests will experience avariety of sustainable native plants thatthey can consider using to replace thosenon-native, water-thirsty miscreant flora, all crackly and brown, that used to adorntheir All-American Front Yard.

An Evironmentally Friendly Library? We don’t know yet what the future holds for our Central Library, but there will be bigchanges and we can hope for (and encourage) the best in environmental building/renovation techniques. That would be doubly appropriate because the choices underconsideration are driven in part by the building’s unhappy legacy of asbestos.

Two years of effort have brought us to three options. They are on display on thefirst floor lobby and can be accessed online at www.arlingtonlibrary.org/central-visioning. They are: addition of a third floor and parking structure (Option 1) or razingof the building and construction of a new, 99,000 sqft building plus parking structureat the same location (Option 2). Option 3 would place the library at another locationin the city. The projected costs and timetable for each option are included.

There will be more opportunities to be heard; with any luck we can help make theleap from asbestos to LEED certification. Green someday?Green someday?Green someday?Green someday?Green someday?

Thanks to Our Last Speaker

Our meeting last month was tree-huggerheaven: Matt Churches, Arlington cityforester, presented the remarkable resultsof the UFORE study he oversaw. Monthsof grueling work have yielded a detailedpicture of our urban forest, and Mattmade it clear and fascinating. We’reindebted to him for the talk — and forhis efforts on behalf of our trees.

When I looked out on the deck,As I do whenever possibleSince viewing birds and bloomsIs my groundingAs I bustle through my day,This morning an anomaly appeared,A still gray form beside the chimneyHalf-hidden by a chair. It took a blink to realizeIt was a dead rat,Caught by who knew what disaster,Whether hawk or catOr poison bait or just the ill effectsOf eating too much mildewed birdseed.I knew I had to move it,Not just for sanitationBut as well from a surprising urgeTo show respect toward a creatureI consider hostilely.By the time I got outdoorsThe carrion flies, familiar crew,Had settled in, were feedingAnd depositing their eggs,Part since time began of Nature’s plan. The odor was horrific to my nose,Heir of a hundred million yearsOf noses that had knownThis was the smell of death, decay,Disease, a warning to the living. But I faced it, scooped it on a shovelWith the longest handle possibleAnd made procession to the compost pileWhere I’d already dug a grave, a tiny pitReplete with microscopic lifeThat was waiting for my gift –The rat’s gift really – of a bodyTo be reabsorbed into the soil. And what could be more holy? What more sacred than a giftOf life for life, flesh for future flesh?I laid it gently in the earth,Covered it with loam and leaves,Thought a silent thought of blessingTo this, my furry brother/sister,Then went back to all the flowers,The singing finches.

According to the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, data from theTexas Cancer Registry in 2009 showedthat six counties in the western FortWorth-Dallas area had the highestincidence of invasive breast cancer inthe state. These counties — Tarrant,Denton, Wise, Parker, Hood andJohnson — all in the Barnett Shale, arewhere emissions from the exploitation ofshale gas are perhaps coincidentallyresponsible for the highest NOx emis-sions reported for that year.

It may be worth noting that thesecounties are also heavily affected byemissions from the Midlothian cementkilns. We have to wonder whether a toxicstew of pollutants will someday be linkedto a range of human health issues. At thevery least, this is disturbing, especially forgirls and young women.
