ACCC Indigenous Education Protocol - Purpose

• Develop an Indigenous Education Protocol that ACCC members can sign to affirm their committment to supporting Indigenous learners and communities

• Similar to other ACCC Protocols:– ACCC Pan-Canadian Protocol for the Transferability of

Learning (100 signatories)– ACCC Pan-Canadian Protocol for Sustainability (59

signatories)

• Example: Association of Canadian Deans of Education – Accord on Indigenous Education

ACCC Indigenous Education Protocol - Goals

• Support capacity building at colleges and institutes to better serve Indigenous students and communities

• Provide national profile to college / institute approaches for serving Indigenous learners and communities

• Support ACCC advocacy on the need for increased federal post-secondary education funding for Indigenous peoples

ACCC Indigenous Education Protocol – Process & Timelines

• Committee consults colleges & institutes through 2013 ACCC Annual Conference

• Protocol developed and draft presented to ACCC Board of Directors – Fall 2013

• Protocol sent to ACCC members early 2014 for review and signature

• Signatories acknowledged at public launch of the Protocol at the 2014 ACCC Annual Conference in Ottawa – in collaboration with the Assembly of First Nations, other national Indigenous organizations and federal government partners

ACCC Indigenous Education Protocol – A Dialogue and Consultation

• Small Group Discussions on 6 questions:• Choose two questions you would like to discuss• Questions on different tables in the room• 20 to 25 minutes per question • Chairs will signal when it is time to change

tables/questions• Indigenous Education Committee members will

facilitate discussion at each table and will report to plenary on 1 to 2 key take away points for each question

Consultation Questions for Small Group Discussions

1. What are the key elements, other than Indigenous educational programming and support services, that colleges must have to demonstrate an environment that supports Indigenous education ?

2. Indigenous education is not only about educating the learner, it is also about capacity building and self-determination for the Indigenous communities. What do you think an Indigenous Education Protocol should include, and what are the key elements to ensure buy in from all of our stakeholders?

3. How can we capture the unique communities within our Indigenous learner population across Canada? (ex: rural, remote, northern, urban, global, entry level, advanced level, second language)

4. What are the benefits and opportunities for creating an indigenous protocol ? What are the risks and challenges ?

5. What have you found to be successful in educational programming and support services that support Indigenous education?

6. Identify ways that key stakeholders can be engaged in the Protocol and the solution more broadly to increase Indigenous peoples’ access to PSE and support capacity building of Indigenous communities.
