SEVEN KEY COMPONENTS1. Provide academic and curricular exchange opportunities between

IUPUI faculty and high school teachers through collaborative educational initiatives

2007: Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) expressing a desire to work collaboratively toward an early college partnership with Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School (CAMMHS).

2008: SPAN Division was charged with developing and implementing the CAMMHS accelerated college immersion initiative utilizing existing immersion model.

In academic year 2008/2009, the IUPUI campus received the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in part for its academic collaborative and community service work with the

• The IUPUI campus has committed to up to $250,000 per academic year to cover the cost of tuition for eligible CAMMHS juniors and seniors. Each scholarship recipient may enroll in up to 18 credit hours tuition-free at IUPUI through the SPAN Division. This represents a scholarship of approximately $5000 per student at current IUPUI tuition rates.

• Student success is assisted through a variety of university-sponsored student support services.

Student Support Initiatives

PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT: Scholars Summer Seminar –Six week summer intensive to assist with the transition to college.

Student Learning Outcomes: Differentiate between secondary (high school) and higher (university) education Develop a supportive network of staff, faculty, and fellow students Develop crucial academic skills such as following instructions, meeting deadlines, time management,

and study skills Identify the physical layout of the campus (e.g., buildings and offices) Practice the basic communication skills of writing, speaking, reading, and listening Utilize critical thinking skills in the context of the university environment and in making healthcare

profession decisions Learn IUPUI’s code of academic honesty, and become aware of the advantages of acting in an honest

manner Use campus information technology resources to support academic work and campus connections Identify and utilize resources and services of the university that can support student learning Identify the physical layout and resources of the library Develop and/or strengthen educational planning and organizational skills Use feedback through to improve academic performance Succeed as a student at IUPUI Recognize the expectations and typical grade point you need to apply for your chosen healthcare career Develop an action plan with academic advisor for selection to your chosen healthcare career Identify other healthcare alternatives

Student Support Initiatives

DURING ENROLLMENT: Community of Learners Seminar –full semester (meets one per week) to provide academic support, training, and resources for success first semester of college course enrollment/immersion.

Student Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate effective writing and speaking skills (Core Communication). Utilize information resources and technology at CAMMHS and at IUPUI (Core

Communication). Become critical thinkers who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, problem

solving skills, and creativity in solving problems (Critical Thinking). Apply the skills learned in their Community of Learners seminar to their first

semester college courses as well as in future college courses (Integration and Application of Knowledge).

Be able to learn how to make sound decisions with respect to individual conduct and citizenship (Understanding Society and Culture).

Describe the university rules regarding academic honesty and plagiarism (Values and Ethics).

Modify their approach to an issue or problem and know how to apply them to specific issues (Intellectual Depth Breadth and Adaptiveness).

IUPUI FACULTY LECTURE SERIES & TRANSITIONS TO COLLEGE SUPPORT SERIES

FACULTY LECTURE SERIES: In an effort to increase IUPUI faculty awareness of the Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School and exposure to the partnership our campus has entered into with IPS, a Faculty Lecture Series was created. Faculty share their expertise and insights regarding their specific field of study, with a particular emphasis on engaging CAMMHS high school students and CAMMHS teaching staff.

The Lecture Series at CAMMHS will feature faculty from the departments of:

TRANSITIONS to COLLEGE (TC) SUPPORT SERIES: Coupled with the Faculty Lecture Series, the TC series seeks to increase CAMMHS student college readiness and preparedness while developing a growing Early College culture at Crispus Attucks by informing students on the educational opportunities available at IUPUI, while providing assistance in helping students define academic goals and plan appropriate academic programs and strategies.

CAMMHS EARLY COLLEGE ENTRANCE INITIATIVE

Since fall 2008, 173 CAMMHS SPAN Scholars have enrolled in 1,833 credit hours at IUPUI.

· Academic Performance: fall 2008 through fall 2013 overall GPA for CAMMHS is 3.15; up from 2.97 the previous year.

· Matriculation: As of spring 2013, Crispus Attucks has graduated four groups of seniors since becoming a Medical Magnet. More than 30% of each senior class has matriculated to IUPUI as regular degree-seeking students following high school graduation. And, 45% of CAMMHS SPAN Scholars have matriculated to IUPUI or an IU campus. This year, over 50% of the 2013 CAMMHS graduates matriculated to IUPUI as regular degree-seeking students.
