The problem...By targeting each patient’s unique tumour, Precision Medicine is crushing once-untreatable cancers.

Yes, rapid advances in the molecular characterization of tumours have increased understanding of the molecular pathways which underlie cancer.

Yes, progress in personnalized medicine allowed to optimize treatment selection and enhance the patient’s quality of life

But only a fraction of patients currently benefit.

But, drug resistance remains a major obstacle,

But, new treatments are marketed at ever increasing prices, irrespective of their clinical effectiveness.

But, the selection of multiple molecular-targeted agents to treat tumours on the basis of aberrant pathways will be enormously expensive.

Can medicine close the gap?The costs could be justified if the approach led to significant gains in survival or quality of life. But it is not the case of Personalized Medicine as it is currently practiced.

The Precision Oncology summer school prompts participants to rethink current approaches and explore new methods and models –including Artificial Intelligence and Big Data from MRI, CT and PET scans as well as from genetic testing, with a focus on:

engaging with patients

accessing critical data

improving clinical trials

targeting investments

With a deeper understanding of how personalized medicine works in practice, participants will be better prepared to interact and collaborate with leading players in cancer research and treatment.

Such challenges cannot be solved by scientific

endeavour alone.
