• Acceleration: is a change in velocity.–Because acceleration is a change in velocity

and not speed you must also indicate direction

• You go faster if acceleration and velocity point in the same direction

• You slow down or decelerate if acceleration and velocity point in opposite directions

• When you accelerate or decelerate you change your velocity by a specific amount over a specific amount of time.

• Calculating Acceleration:

• Units: meters/ second/ second OR m/s2

Acceleration= Change in Velocity Time

Acc.= Final Velocity – Initial Velocity Time

Newton’s Second Law

• Newton’s Second Law states that the strength of a force is equal to the amount of mass involved multiplied by any acceleration applied to it.

Demonstration 1:

• You are predicting how far you think the dixie cup will move when hit by either the heavier container or the lighter container.

Demonstration 2

• For this demo you will have a golf ball, a ping pong ball, and a straw.

• You will blow through the straw to move the golf ball and ping pong ball.

• You will predict whether it will require more force to move the ping pong ball or the golf ball
