  • Company DescriptionGeographic ReachAccenture serves clients in more than 200 cities spanning 120 countries. The majority of its revenue is balancedbetween the Americas and Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). The US is its largest individual market, generating about one-third of total revenue. The remainder is made in the Asia/Pacific region.OperationsAccenture's business is divided into five operating groups: Communications, Media & Technology; FinancialServices; Health & Public Service; Products; and Resources. Although revenue generated by these operatinggroups is well dispersed, Products isthe company's largest segment, serving mainlyconsumer-oriented industries, including automotive, consumer goods, life sciences, retail, transportation, and travel services.Accenture has a global network of innovation centers in the US, Australia, China, Japan, Singapore, India, France, and South Africa.Financial PerformanceAs the global economy has improved and the demand for its consulting and outsourcing serviceshas increased,Accenturerecognized a 9% spike in revenue ($27.4 billion to $29.7 billion) and a 12 % rise in profits ($2.3 billion to$2.6 billion) from 2011 to 2012.The recent growth was attributed to double digit growth across all its fiveoperating groups. Accenture has alsobenefited from its growth strategy that is focused on further differentiating its products and servicesin themarketplace and improving its competitiveness. It has also been helped from a positiveincrease in the localcurrency.StrategyAccenture's strategy is focused on deepening and differentiating its industry and technology capabilities fromcompetitors. It is doing so in part by investing in analytics, cloud computing, insight-driven health, interactive anddigital marketing, mobility, and smart grid. Acquisitions, joint ventures, and alliancesare key means through whichAccenture enhances and adds to its offerings. One such partnership is a five-year research collaborationwithMITannounced in early 2013 to develop advanced analytics, specifically how to harness the challenges of bigdata and develop new approaches to improve the science of decision-making. In late 2012 Accenture and GEAviationformed a joint venture company called Taleris to provide global airlines and cargo carriers with intelligentoperations services to improve efficiency. From a geographic standpoint, the company is focusing expansion efforts on certain emerging markets inparticular, such as Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, and certain countries inSoutheast Asia and the Middle East.Mergersand AcquisitionsTo help its clients more effectively measure and monitor the progress of their change programs, Accenture in 2013acquired ChangeTrack Research, an Australia-based provider of analytics-based tools and services for changemanagement usage. The acquisition complemented Accenture's suite of tools and capabilities to help its clientsachieve the goals of their most significant organizational transformations.Adding to its footprint in Asia/Pacific, Accenture acquired in 2012 Singapore-based Newspage Pte Ltd, a providerof distributor management and mobility software that helps consumer goods companies improve their operations, sales performance, and data visibility.Earlier in 2012 the company expanded its operations through the purchase of Octagon Research Solutions, aprovider of clinical and regulatory information management solutions and software for the pharmaceuticalindustry. The deal gives Accenture a means to provide clinical and regulatory services to pharmaceuticalcompanies.

  • Company HistoryAccenture traces its history back to the storied accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co. Founded by NorthwesternUniversity professor and accounting legend Arthur Andersen in 1913, the firm's expanding scope of operations led itinto forensic accounting and advising clients on financial reporting processes, forming the basis for a managementconsulting arm. Arthur Andersen led the firm until his death in 1947. His successor, Leonard Spacek, split off theconsulting operations as a separate unit in 1954.The consulting business grew quickly during the 1970s and 1980s, thanks in part to an orgy of US corporate re-engineering. By 1988 consulting accounted for 40% of Andersen's sales. Chafing at sharing profits with theauditors (who faced growing price pressures and a rising tide of legal action due to the accounting irregularities oftheir clients), the consultants sought more power within the firm. The result was a 1989 restructuring thatestablished Andersen Worldwide (later Andersen) as the parent of two independent units, Arthur Andersen andAndersen Consulting (AC). The growing revenue imbalance between the operations remained unresolved, however, and a year later Arthur Andersen poured gas on the flames by establishing its own business consultancy.Meanwhile, AC continued to expand during the 1990s by forming practices focused on manufacturing, finance, andgovernment. It addressed the shift from mainframes to PCs by forming alliances with technology heavyweightsHewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, and Microsoft. In 1996 AC teamed up with Internet service provider BBN(acquired by GTE in 1997) to form ServiceNet, a joint venture to develop Internet commerce and other systems. The Andersen family feud took a turn for the worse in 1997 with the retirement of CEO Lawrence Weinbach. Adeadlocked vote for a new leader led the board to appoint accounting partner Robert Grafton as CEO, angering theconsulting partners. Later that year AC asked the International Chamber of Commerce to negotiate a breakup ofAndersen Worldwide. George Shaheen, to whom many attributed the heightened tensions between the units, resigned as CEO of AC in 1999 and was replaced by Joe Forehand. While the separation dispute dragged on, the consulting business grew and diversified amid increasing consolidationin the industry. In 1999 the company moved into e-commerce venture funding with the formation of AndersenConsulting Ventures, and in 2000 it inked partnership deals with Microsoft (Microsoft system implementationservices), Sun Microsystems (for B2B Internet office supply sales), and BT (Internet-based human resourcesservices). That year an international arbitrator finally approved AC's separation from its parent, ruling that the consultancymust change its name and pay Andersen Worldwide $1 billion (far less than the $15 billion demanded by theaccounting partners). Renamed Accenture, the company went public in 2001. While the new name (a made-up word)might have struck some as a marketing challenge, having an identity distinct from that of its formerparent provedto be a stroke of luck for Accenture.Andersen broke apart in 2002 after becomingembroiled in the accountingscandals of energy giant Enron. In 2004 Accenture successfully bid on a $10 billion, 10-year contract to create a system to identify visitors andimmigrants coming into the country. Dubbed US-VISIT (United States Visitor and Immigrant Status IndicatorTechnology), the system was to be employed by the Department of Homeland Security to prevent terrorists fromentering the US. However,Accenture's bid nearly ran afoul of congressional critics who tried to pass spendingamendments barring firms headquartered outside the US from winning security-related business.Forehand stepped down as CEO of Accenture in 2004 and was replaced by company veteran William Green.Forehand remained chairman until he retired in 2006, when Green was named to that post, as well.Accentureacquired Capgemini's North American health practice in 2005 for $175 million in order to strengthen itsofferings to hospitals and health care systems. In 2006 the firm expanded its outsourcing operations by buyingNaviSys, a leading provider of software for the life insurance industry, along withkey assets of Kansas-basedaccountant Savista. In mid-2008, Accenture swallowed up ATAN, an industrial and automation services provider based in Brazil thatcaters to the mining, energy, and utilities sectors. Italso obtained SOPIA, a Tokyo-basedconsulting firm specializinginOraclesystems integration. During that year Accenture added to its transportation and travel services operations(located within its Products Division) when it bought AddVal Technology. AddVal provided software and technologyusedfor freight order management, and the deal enhanced Accenture'sability to integrate and simplifyitsclients'freight management services capabilities. In late 2009 Accenture looked to solidify its position in a vital market when it obtained the Symbian professionalservices unitofNokia. The unit offers engineering and support servicesfor the Symbian operating system, one of theworld's most widely used operating systems for smart phones. The acquired operations provided a broad range ofembedded software services for mobile devices andwere rebrandedAccenture Embedded Mobility Services.Accenture obtained RiskControl, a consultingfirm based in Brazil, in early 2010. Also that year Accenture boughtBeijing Genesis Interactive Technology Company, an embedded softwarefirmproviding mobile software outsourcingservices to companies in China. The acquisitions furthered Accenture's penetration into the cutting-edge smart
