The Big IDeA Pilot
• Ontario is partnering with OCAD University’s Inclusive Design Research Centre to deliver the Big IDeA, a collaborative program that celebrates successes and encourages innovations in accessibility.
• Big IDeA will identify accessibility champions and leaders; bringing together current technologies with main street business practices to recognize businesses that break down barriers and welcome people with disabilities to enjoy the products and services they offer.
• Big IDeA achieves this through giving users a voice and dialogue with business through reviews, user generated mapping and allowing businesses and customers to have conversations within an online platform.
• The platform also provides free training and education materials for business owners.
• The Big IDeA pilot program will launch early spring. The proposed 18 month pilot will initially focus on two communities, both downtown Toronto and the City of Peterborough.
AODA Updates
21
• Downtown Toronto offers diverse community which includes the highest concentration of persons with disabilities, student population, and it includes a broad representation of businesses.
• Peterborough is a smaller city with a diverse educational, commercial and agricultural base. The community includes businesses and organizations where accessibility is a priority.
• Big IDeA will help to build up communities that are going above and beyond compliance to create a culture of accessibility. In addition, communities both large and small will be able to benefit from having recognition available for their local businesses.
• After the pilot phase Big IDeA will be expanded to include more locations in Ontario.
