DESCRIPTION
Handout about being fair when we recruit staff for people with learning difficultiesTRANSCRIPT
What we can do to be fair when we interview
It is illegal for an employer to treat a person unfairly when they apply for a job because of their - age,
disability,
race, (skin colour or nationality)
belief, (religion or faith)
sexual orientation (being attracted to the opposite sex/ same sex or both)
gender (man/ woman/ trans)
You must ask all the candidates the same set questions (you can prompt people but someone needs to write notes about what you said)
Questions must only be about the person’s ability to do the job.
At least 1 person should take notes of what people say in their interview. The organisation needs to keep them.
Allow everyone you interview the same amount of time
Take pictures of people so you remember who they are
If someone doesn’t understand a question you can ask it in a different way
Mark the interviews straight away

Keep the reasons why someone got or didn’t get the job. If someone didn’t get the job you need to keep the records for a year. If someone got the job you keep them the whole time they are employed.
Ask questions about disability only after you have offered them the job
