High-performance oil and grease

Grease solventThe solvent from the spray can easily softens coats of oil and fat and removes them. Parts which are to be cast en bloc, glued or sprayed with tracing paint should be cleaned with grease solvent from the spray can before-hand. The adhesive force of the compound is therefore significantly increased.

Anaerobic plastic adhesivesAnaerobic plastic adhesives are distributed onto the assembly parts in a liquid state. They remain in a liquid state as long as there is oxy-gen access. When the parts are mounted, the chemical conversion from the liquid state into a tough substance formed by plastic molecu-lar chains is started with the occlusion of oxy-gen and metal contact.

Due to its effective capillary action, the plas-tic fills out even the smallest interspaces. It cramps in the surface roughness of the parts that are to be linked together. The jointing gap is completely filled in as a result. Due to this 100 % surface contact, a shock and vibra-tion-proof keyed connection is formed.

Constructional layout of a compoundA jointing and bonding compound should always be laid out in a way that only pulling, pressing and shearing forces occur – however, not peel-off forces.

A high L/D ratio (length/diameter) guarantees a good distribution of tension in the bond-ing gap.

Gap fillingSufficiently sized roundings and chamfers enable a good product distribution when mounting joint parts. In the case of press fits and larger sizes, always moisten both sur-faces thinly and evenly with the respective LOCTITE product.

Moisten the borehole of blind holes in such a way to prevent the compressed air from push-ing the liquid adhesive away when mounting.

Joining different materialsWhen joining different materials (for example, steel bolts in an aluminium housing) with oper-ating temperatures of over 50 °C/122 °F, the various thermal expansion coefficients must be taken into consideration. For instance, alu-minium expands twice as much as steel does.

Compatibility with other materialsThe materials used most (metals, sintered materials, ceramics and glass) are chemically unaltered by the liquid adhesives for plastics.

The hardened coating remains chemically neutral.

The following plastics can be affected after a longer period of time: vinyl, ABS products, polysulfone, PVC, polycarbonate, polystyrene, SAN products and lacquered surfaces.

SolubilityThe liquid anaerobic LOCTITE products are soluble in trichloroethylene and many other chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Chemical constancyThe fully hardened LOCTITE products show a very good stability with regard to oil, benzine, organic solvents and coolants.

The greater the mechanical strength of a special type of adhesive, the greater the chemical constancy.

Storing timeAt room temperature, the LOCTITE products are storable for at least 1 year. The content of air in the bottles is necessary in order to prevent hardening before use. Screws, metal parts or brushes must not be dipped into the bottle. Soiled LOCTITE must not be poured back into the bottle. In order to prevent hard-ening, the activator must not be mixed with LOCTITE products.

Activator 7649A hardening accelerator for the anaerobic products LOCTITE 542, 603 and 270. Reduces time required for hardening. Easy to use: Spray on, allow to dry, and then apply the LOCTITE product.

IntroductionThe usage of casting resin compound in the cutting and punching tool engineering has essentially facilitated the creation of break-throughs for profiled punches, as well as the fixing of cutting punches and punch guides. By the use of casting resin, a great reduc-tion of the manufacture and repairs costs has been achieved. In addition, the working hours of qualified persons have been reduced and in some cases, even quality and lifetime improvements have been attained. The cast-ing of certain parts of cutting and punching tools is applied with good success to:

Punches with sliding clearance in guide plates

Interchangeable punches with punch hold-ing plates

Fixed punches in punch holding plates Fixed guide bushes in pillar guide dies Punches in ejectors Die plate inserts

The epoxy resin system with the ACTIVATOR (reactive) developed for this intended use has an enormous adhesive strength, excellent sliding characteristics, high pressure resist-ance, is relatively fluid and admits small cast-ing gaps.It can be cast and hardened at room tem-perature. Dwindling is very little and can be ignored.

The resin enriched with filler in the factory can be cast in coatings of 1–10 mm. It is very reactive and hardens very well, even in thin coatings.

Preparation of tool partsThe casting resin system adheres very well to all materials, especially metals. Therefore all tool parts which are to stay moveable after the casting (e.g. punches) should be pretreated with the separating agent (SZ 9704). The sepa-rating effect and surface quality of the casting resin moulding material can be improved by light polishing of the pretreated surfaces with a woollen cloth. Multiple applications of the separating agent SZ 9704 result in a greater sliding clearance.

For an impeccable sliding guide, interchangea-ble tool parts and punches must be plane-par-allel aligned and the surface roughness must be “fine”.

The breakthrough in the guide and punch hold-ing plates must be free of grease and should be roughened, just like the cast fixed punches, guide bushes and die plate inserts. The connection of the casting resin mate-rial and metal can be further improved with grooves, boreholes or pins.

Examples for the casting1. Cutting punches with sliding clearance in guide plates. The breakthrough in the guide plate is delin-eated from the ready die plate and is bored about 1–3 mm bigger or sawed out. The sawed out or bored breakthrough surfaces are

The upper part is moved over the guide bushes placed on the pillars of the lower part, aligned on parallel bars and loaded. The cast gap must be sealed from the bottom with plasticine, the guide bush must be supported by additional spacers (5). A cast ball guide bush is displayed in (6). to be degreased. The contact surfaces of both plates must be sprayed with the separating agent SZ 9704 or provided with a waxed paper intermediate coating in order to prevent them being glued to one another. After this, the contact surfaces are to be clamped together. The punch coated with the separating agent is put into the breakthrough, centered in the cutting plate and held in the vertical position by magnetic angles. Then, the casting is done and after the casting resin compound has hardened, the final cutting clearance between the punch and die plate cut-through is to be arranged.

In the case of profiled punches, the mould rup-ture in the guide plate can be replaced by a borehole through casting with casting resin. (1).

In the case of thin cutting punches which must be long for reasons of stability, the guide plate must be cast out (2).

2. Cutting punches secured in punch holding plates. The casting is done in principally the same way as for the guide plates. The position of the cutting punch is determined by the cut-ting, guide, scraper or ejector plate in accord-ance with the tool type. As the punch must be firmly secured in the punch holding plate, the punch head must be roughened and degreased. Picture (3) shows a cast cutting punch with conical head.

With mould punches, it is useful to provide the holding portion with grooves and to create a conical breakthrough in the punch hold-ing plate. In certain cases, it is necessary to lessen the stripping forces with additional holding screws (4). The casting resin com-pound will then only serve for fixing the posi-tion of the punch.

3. Interchangeable cutting punches in punch holding plates. If cast cutting punches for upkeep or repair are interchangeable in the punch holding plate, it must be noted during casting that punch head has to be provided with a separating agent, while the breakthrough must be roughened and degreased.

4. Guide bushes secured in die sets.As opposed to the pressed-in bushes, cast-in guide bushes firmly secured in the upper part of a die set have the advantage that there hap-pens to be no narrowing due to the pressfit and the guide diameter must therefore not be honed for a second time.

Furthermore, costly fineboring, lapping works and high precision turning are not required, and the quality is not reduced. The mounting bore for the guide bush in the upper part should be 3–6 mm larger than the outer diameter of the guide bush. The bush borehole and outer surface are to be rough-ened and degreased.

Model resin

Introduction:The construction of foundry models, templates, fixtures, moulding and tolerance gauges as well as foundry devices with model resin has the following advantages:

Quick manufacture with simple means Excellent form and dimensional stability of the end product

Excellent tensile strength, little wear Little weight Easy to change, quick to repair, practical to manufacture

In tool and model manufacture, four sim-ple basic working or assembly methods are applied depending on the type of the part and its use.

Creating the surface coating Casting Backfilling Laminating

Starting models and their pretreatmentsHigh precision master or gauge models are required for the manufacture of model devices out of model resin. Their surface quality has a decisive influence upon the surface smooth-ness of the negatives and model devices.

The extraordinary grip of the model resin on almost all materials must be compensated by an appropriate pretreatment of the starting models with sealing and the separating agent SZ 9704. The hardened models can therefore be perfectly removed from the mould. In the case of porous surfaces (e.g. wood), several coatings should be applied for reasons of prac-ticality. Each individual coating must dry for a short time and the last coating should be pol-ished with a soft cloth or cotton wad in order to obtain a blank surface on the part to be cast. Starting models can be made out of all usual model materials such as wood, gypsum, metal, concrete and epoxy araldite resin.

Assembly methods

Surface coatings:A surface coating is applied to the pretreated starting model with a short cut brush or is cast between the negative and the under- dimensioned core. This makes a surface with high edge strength that is flexible until hard, and allows precision shaping of the finest contours.

The surface coatings are back up with model resin or backfilled with a high-fill model resin mass, depending on the usage of the relevant production equipment.

Solid casting:Pretreated moulds can be directly cast out with model resin. This solid casting method is suitable for the manufacture of screw-on mod-els and negatives with coating thicknesses of up to 20 mm max.

Front casting:An under-dimensioned core made from metal or epoxy resin is required for this method. This core is cast with casting resin and fixed according to the desired front coating thick-ness in the negative form with an all-round distance of 12–18 mm.

Backfilling:Large filler quantities are mixed into the model resin. This resin/activator/filler mixture is cast or stamped into the moulds provided with surface and coupling coatings or laminate. Various types of filling material can be used, such as silica sand or aluminium grit. Quartz sand-filled backfilling compounds achieve the highest pressure resistance, aluminium grit mixtures provide workable, heat-dissipating back fillers. To facilitate the rear side machin-ing of model devices, an additional workable casting resin coating is to be cast on at a thick-ness of approximately 5–10 mm.

Laminating:When laminating, glass fabric is perfused thoroughly with laminating resin by means of a stiff-bristled brush, ductor blade or special laminating hook, and is built up in layers until the required shell thickness is reached.

Instead of the time-consuming setup of a laminate shell made from several fibreglass coatings, a shell can be made in one process by using araldite laminating pastes.
