Background - Introduction of efficiency Classes acc. to CEMEP

After the example set by the USA with the EPACT law, the EU took the initiative in co-operation with CEMEP1) to implement measures for improving the efficiency levels of electrical drives. Motive: Reduction of the emission of CO2.

CEMEP described efficiency classification for 2-pole and 4-pole motors in the power range from 1.1 to 90 kW. Efficiency was subdivided into three classes so that 2 characteristics define the three classes: – "eff1" (High-efficiency motors)– "eff2" (Improved-efficiency motors)– "eff3" (Standard motors)

The Europe Union develop new standard IEC 60034-30: 2008 and defines efficiency classes for 50 and 60 Hz and stipulates, worldwide, which motors are involved and which exceptions apply. The EU Regulation is essentially based on this standard.

1) CEMEP = European Committee of Manufacturers of Electrical Machines and Power Electronics; Efficiency determined as before according to EN 60034-2

Energy Saving in Drive Technology

Customer benefits?

An investment in energy-efficient drive technology has an extremely short payback time – depending on the particularapplication, already less than two years.

One thing is especially important when selecting the optimumdrive technology: The analysis of the lifecycle costs. For drive technology, the subsequent/follow-on costs areespecially high when compared to the initial purchase price.

Reduce costs and improve processes using frequency converters on Pumps, Fans, Compressors

For traditional, mechanical control concepts, the motor always operates with a fixed speed that has been designed for the maximum flow rate – although this is only infrequently required in practice. The consequence: High energy losses.

By changing the speed, the flowratecharacteristic is precisely located where the process optimally requires it. As a consequence, the motor only draws the power that is presently required at any particular operating point.

It especially makes sense to use frequency converters for applications with a square-law torque characteristic (e.g. pumps, fans, compressors): The frequency converters precisely and always adapt the motor speed to the currently required flow rate.

Flowcontrol with Frequency converters and flowmeters save up to 70 % energy and often have payback times of just a few months
