Welcome The University of East London’s Student Village is based at our Docklands campus and is one of the newest student-living developments in London.

The Student Village houses nearly 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students, who study at the Docklands, Stratford or University Square Stratford campuses. Situated along the Royal Albert Dock, our studio flats and shared flats boast views over the Canary Wharf business district, the O2 Arena and London City Airport. Some of our accommodation hosted the United States Olympic Committee during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. All of our rooms are en-suite and a number of our rooms are also adapted for students with disabilities.

This guide will give you an insight into living at UEL, our types of rooms, our onsite and local facilities, safety and security and living in London, and includes a step-by-step guide on how to apply.

* Please note UEL reserves the right to accommodate students off campus if demand is such that the advertised accommodation is over

100% occupied. UEL’s accommodation adheres to the UUK code www.ukcode.info

Late applications

Priority for places in halls will be given to undergraduate and overseas students who have met the above criteria. If there are any remaining places after 31 July 2015 they will be allocated as below:

Applications received after the deadline

If you miss the above deadlines, you are still welcome to apply for student accommodation but unfortunately we will not be able to guarantee you a place in halls. All applications will be treated on a first-come, first-served basis.

London is rich in culture. With world-class museums, royal and political history and iconic landmarks, you will never run out of places to see. The entertainment options offered in the capital are enormous: shows in the West End, cinemas showing the latest releases and all-time classics, clubs and bars for all musical tastes, trips along the River Thames, the London Eye and so much more.

London has over 40,000 shops and some of the most famous stores and streets in the world: Harrods, Selfridges, Oxford Street, Regent Street, Carnaby Street – the list goes on and on. There are also giant retail parks such as Gallion’s Reach, only a ten-minute walk from the Docklands halls, and the ever-expanding shopping centre at Canary Wharf, fifteen minutes by tube from both campuses. Meanwhile, Stratford boasts the vast Westfield Shopping Centre. Opened in 2012, Europe’s largest urban shopping and leisure centre is just a few minutes walk from our Stratford campuses. London is also famed for its wealth of markets, including Petticoat Lane street market and Borough food markets.

As a student at UEL you get to experience living in east London, one of the capital’s liveliest and most affordable areas. The east has something for everyone, from nights out in Shoreditch to art in Whitechapel, and eating out in Brick Lane to football at West Ham.

If you ever feel the need for a change from the various food outlets on campus, London’s restaurants offer the widest variety of food you could ever imagine – from the famous Brick Lane curry houses to eastern cuisine in China Town and baked-before-your-eyes goodies at Camden Market!

Both campuses are also serviced by local shops and several markets that sell every kind of fresh food you could possibly imagine from all corners of the world.

UEL also has a Silent Witness scheme, which allows students to report anonymously any incident that may have worried them.

Around the Student Village there are numerous CCTV cameras. Each one is active and monitored by our Security team in the UEL control room.

There is also a visitor policy in place, which means that students are safe in the knowledge that those in residences are either authorised visitors or fellow residents.

At the University of East London, our residents’ safety and security is our top priority.

The University has an on-campus security team available 24 hours a day. Our security officers are responsible for regularly patrolling the Student Village to ensure the safety and security of all of our resident students on campus.

We have a dedicated Security helpdesk located in the Reception Building, which students can visit at any time. Additionally, each room contains a phone from which residents can dial directly to Security at any time if they require. The University has a dedicated emergency line from which residents can get urgent assistance and we work closely with the Metropolitan Police to ensure students feel safe and happy around campus.

A: Due to a change in the law, there is now no “cooling off” period for residential accommodation contracts. This means that once you accept your offer, the contract becomes legally binding on both UEL and on you. Q: Can I change my room if I move in and I don’t like it?
