In 2011, Boeing was named EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year. Boeing St. Louis now uses a closed-loop system to cool pump bearings.

This saves 13.9 million gallons of water a year at this site. The U.S. military has tested and approved use of biofuel blends in

Boeing military aircraft. Boeing is funding sustainable biofuel research.

INNOVATIONS

Boeing St. Louis developed a method to remove cured sealant from sealant application tubes. A sheltered workshop separates the plastic tube (now recycled) from the cured sealant, which is used as supplemental cement kiln fuel.

The prototype Phantom Eye surveillance aircraft, developed and assembled here, uses hydrogen fuel to stay aloft up to 4 days without refueling.

“Through our skilled and innovative workforce, we are making tremendous strides to improve the environmental performance of Boeing, our products and of the global aerospace industry.” Jim McNerney, CEO

Electronic Document Process- MMA started an electronic transfer policy in 2004. We now transfer the majority (90-95%) of our files electronically. We have altered our specifications to include verbiage about requirements for all of our projects and electronic transfer of files. Our accounting department utilizes electronic accounting. We receive and send bills electronically. Because we have made this commitment to reducing our dependence on paper we have cut our costs on paper, courier, and file storage. We use flash drives and iPads to show documentation when out of the office. This eliminates the need to print, store, and carry unnecessary paperwork. We ask all of our consultants, clients, and contractors to send files electronically thru our Project Information Software; Newforma. We have found the electronic file transfers also aide in speed of review on timely items.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) has recognized Saint Louis University with a STARS Bronze Rating. The Sustainability Tracking & Rating System (STARS) is the tool used to perform a comprehensive, campus-wide, self-assessment.

SLU’s unique inter-disciplinary Master of Sustainability degree program launched in 2010 has doubled course offerings and increased enrollment by 50%, thanks in part to SLU’s participation in the Green Business Challenge.

SLU’s commitment to sustainability enabled the Center for Sustainability to secure a $2,000,000 grant from an international energy company to conduct further research into sustainable energy alternatives, and to establish an endowed chair in sustainability.

INNOVATIONS

The Center for Sustainability has partnered with the City of St. Louis to deliver the STAR Community Index software, the nation’s first certification tool for measuring sustainability in cities and municipalities.

The Center for Sustainability developed a unique software platform to facilitate collaboration and unify sustainable practices on campus. The custom database management system provided the foundation for automating the tracking and measuring of sustainability efforts across both the Medical and Frost campuses. This solution works in conjunction with the AASHE STARS online reporting tool and extends its functionality by providing a highly customizable contact and project management solution.

“Sustainability is a humanistic endeavor, where quality of life for all is the vision, and changing our unbridled consumption the mission.” -Dr. Timothy P. Keane

Unique re-use of concrete cylinders as

patio pavers.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

SCI Engineering performs concrete quality control testing services. The test is performed by pouring concrete into a plastic cylinder and leaving it to harden. Once the cylinders are tested, the concrete is ready for disposal. The test may either leave the cylinder whole, meaning it passed the test, or it may leave the cylinder in broken pieces, meaning that the test failed. Intact cylinders are stacked for re-use. There are several potential uses for these intact cylinders including: Rip Rap; Erosion control Stabilization along creek banks or lakes Edging along gardens or yards; patio pavers Painted cylinders for use in landscaping decoration Boat anchors Fish habitat

The City of Fairview Heights collects SCI’s discarded broken cylinders to re-use for erosion control around lakes and other municipal areas.

“I am proud that SCI can accomplish external sustainability by promoting re-use of a by-product of our services that also helps protect our environment.” Scott Harding, CPSS/SC

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Tarlton put a 25 KV Solar Array on top of our Headquarters Building which is helping offset our electrical energy costs.

Tarlton installed large ventilation fans within the two-story volume area of our Headquarters Building to help move air around and help save heating costs in the winter and cooling costs in the summer.

Tarlton installed induction lighting in our two story volume for the high bay lighting. Induction lighting is very energy efficient, using up to 50% less energy than a conventional high bay fixture, and provides excellent lighting and color rendition.

Tarlton retrofitted their lighting in their Maintenance Facility from T-12 Fluorescents to more energy efficient T-8 Fixtures.

INNOVATIONS

Tarlton installed “Truck Tracker” software and hardware in all their yard vehicles to monitor the location of their fleet to help plan routes more efficiently to save on fuel. The software also flags if someone is speeding , another fuel waster, so that activity can be curbed. The software also tells us how much carbon we are putting out so we can measure from week to week and try to do better.

Tarlton has been stockpiling spent fuel oil from their vehicles and using it to heat their Maintenance Facility during the Winter to save on heating costs.

“The Green Business Challenge is a great way for us to connect with other companies, such as Walsh Associates, who helped us pursue our renewable energy goals in the form of solar panels.” George Fujii

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS

All team members and contractors received a reusable mug and pledge to reduce Styrofoam use on campus. New team members are given a reusable mug and informed of the sustainablity practices company-wide during new hire orientation.

We’re averaging 17% of solid waste to recycling since we introduced single stream recycling in March 2010. CBRE has setup the Real-time Energy monitoring room on our WFA Home Office Campus. Carbon footprint was measured as part of the corporate goal of reducing GHG emissions by 20% by 2018.

We're on track to achieving this goal. In 2010 we reduced our emissions by 1,846 metric tons of CO2.

INNOVATIONS WFA Green Fair 2011 - On March 28 we held our 2nd annual Green Fair where an estimated 2,000

employees (30% increase) visited 52 stands (60% increase) and got hands on education on a variety of sustainability topics. The Green Fair went way above and beyond the usual format of vendor/exhibitor displays by providing the forum for exhibitor interviews (broadcasted live throughout the pavilion) and plenty of hands on activities.

We strive to find simple ways to save paper in financial transactions every day. 100% of paper is shredded and recycled. Our current eDoc enrollment rate is 18%, 8% higher than our competitors, which makes us a leader in this front. Our operations group saved 22M pieces of paper through creativeness, process improvements, and the implementation of new technology in Branches/ Home Office.

Styrofoam recycling: We're currently recycling all the Styrofoam that comes in through our loading docks. All material is donated to Midwest Recycling & Shredding. We're recycling an average of 24 cubic square feet of polystyrene #6 on a weekly basis program started on 5/19/11.
