In April 2005, with support from the OakRidges Moraine Foundation, the Ganaraska

Region CA conducted a prescribed burn(inset photo) to help restore a tallgrass

prairie remnant in the Ganaraska Forest.

In 2005 the nine partners in theConservation Authorities Moraine Coalitionachieved some significant milestones intheir work on the Oak Ridges Moraine:

Over 208 hectares of significant Oak Ridges

Moraine lands permanently protected through the

acquisition of 4 new properties

Partner in the creation of “Caring for Your Land”,

an Oak Ridges Moraine stewardship handbook for

rural, non-farm landowners

Drilling programs to locate potential new sources of

groundwater supply and expansion of the

groundwater model to include all of Peel Region

Completed 21 stewardship projects to restore more

than 56 ha of land

The Conservation Authorities MoraineCoalition (CAMC) includes the nine

Conservation Authorities whose watershedboundaries include the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Accomplishments

CAMC MissionTo advance the science and understanding of the OakRidges Moraine.

To work toward government, agency and communitysupport for the conservation and protection of theform, function and linkages of the Oak Ridges Moraine.

CAMC GoalsTo define and protect natural heritage and waterresource systems of the Oak Ridges Moraine throughwatershed studies and monitoring .

To support an accessible trail system.

To ensure effective stewardship services on the OakRidges Moraine.

To build partnerships to provide education, informationand land securement opportunities on the Oak RidgesMoraine.

Groundwater & Hydrogeological ActivitiesThe successful partnership that began in 2000 between the CAMC andthe Regions of York, Peel and Durham and the City of Toronto (YPDT)continued in 2005. The key focus areas of the groundwater programcontinued to be data management, geological understanding ,numerical groundwater modeling and policy development. Highlights include:

Watershed Planning & Policy ActivitiesCAMC member conservation authorities worked with theirmunicipal partners to prepare watershed plans and waterbudgets to meet the requirements of the Oak Ridges MoraineConservation Plan (ORMCP). In addition, members worked onother related initiatives, such as:

Completing and distributing an interim version of modelwatershed policies entitled "Watershed Planning- from Recommendations to MunicipalPolicies - A Guidance Document”Reviewing and commenting on relatedprovincial policy documents including:>9 technical guidelines prepared by

the Ministry of the Environment forthe water policies of the ORMCP >2 Environmental Standards &

Highway design guidelines from theMinistry of Transportation>The Policies & Procedures Manual for the

Administration of the Aggregate ResourcesAct, prepared by the Ministry of Natural Resources

Publishing an article in the Ontario Planning Journaldescribing how the ORMCP was interpreted at five OntarioMunicipal Board hearingsMapping for the Townships of Alnwick/Haldimand andCramahe for their ORMCP conformity zoning by-lawamendments

Drilling programs to determine the depth andextent of bedrock valleys and to locate potentialnew sources of sustainable water supplies:>near Port Perry in Durham Region, to about

70 metres depth>south of Caledon East in Peel Region, to

about 182 metres depth>west of Barrie where coarse grained

materials from ground surface to bedrockindicate significant potential forgroundwater use

Training of technical staff of the partneragencies to develop their skills in specificsoftware applications and modeling

Preparation of twoscientific papers, incollaboration with theGeological Survey of Canada and the OntarioGeological Survey (OGS), discussingsedimentation and groundwater resourceswithin the Caledon bedrock channel and theLaurentian valley system near SchombergPresentations at the Latornell Conference, anOGS Source Water Protection workshop and atthe annual meeting of the municipalEnvironmental Advisory Committees

Restore habitats on the moraine bycompleting 21 stewardship projects on morethan 56 ha of land, including planting ofmore than 20,000 trees and shrubs, wetlandcreation, riparian habitat restoration andprairie creationPermanently protect significant Oak RidgesMoraine lands through the acquisition of 4new properties totaling over 208 haincluding:>61 ha in the Duffins Creek watershed in the

Township of Uxbridge>100 ha in the Enniskillen Valley (totaling

over 240 ha secured in the area)>47.2 ha of Natural Core Area Lands in the

Burnley Creek watershed inAlnwick/Haldimand

Produce and distribute “Caringfor Your Land”, an Oak RidgesMoraine stewardship handbookfor rural non-farm landownersSeven of the nine MoraineConservation Authorities, with manyother stewardship partners active onthe Moraine and with fundingsupport from the Oak RidgesMoraine Foundation, have beenworking on a partnership project toimplement landowner contact and stewardshipprojects in strategic areas on the Moraine - 2005was the pilot year and the project is still in thedevelopment stages, with hopes of beginningimplementation in spring 2006

Stewardship and Land Securement ActivitiesAs a founding member of the Oak Ridges Moraine Stewardship Partners Alliance (ORMSPA), CAMCpartnered with more than 30 organizations plus individual private landowners to:

Research ActivitiesIn keeping with the mission ofCAMC and it individual members,a number of research projects areadvancing the science andunderstanding of the Oak RidgesMoraine. In addition to thegroundwater and watershed

studies, research is also beingundertaken to evaluate the

effectiveness of permeablepavement in helping torestore natural infiltrationfunctions. This includesmonitoring of soil quality,

surface heat flux, runoffrates, and the quality of

surface runoff and infiltratedwater. Appropriately, monitoringequipment is powered by solarpanels and a wind turbine as apart of TRCA's SustainableTechnologies Evaluation Program(STEP).

Natural Heritage ActivitiesCAMC member biologists and ecologists advancedpartnerships and natural heritage science on the OakRidges Moraine by:

Completing Ecological Land Classification mapping for allOak Ridges Moraine headwaters that feed into the LakeSimcoe watershed Finishing a Baseline Biological Inventory for the East CrossForest project, including bird, amphibian, plant, andvegetation community inventories, and producing a draftreport summarizing current conditions and definingprotection, restoration and securement prioritiesDigitizing the mapping of Wetlands and Forest areas for theentire Nottawasaga Valley watershed, including the OakRidges Moraine lands Rerouting a portion of the Oak Ridges Trail through PurpleWoods Conservation Area (north end of the City of Oshawa)through an initiative of Central Lake Ontario CA and theOak Ridges Trail Association Completed Phase 1 of the Ganaraska Plains Initiative, involving a prescribed burn and subsequent plantinventory of the Ochonski Prairie site in the GanaraskaForest, modeling and mapping forest and tallgrassrestoration priorities over the GRCA's portion of themoraine
