According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be buried before the Sabbath. Therefore, Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy Pharisee who believed in Jesus wrappedhis body in fine linen, placed it in a new tomb, and had a heavy stone rolled against theentrance.

On the first day of the week after the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene and another womannamed Mary went toward the sepulchre, they wanted to embalm the body of JesusChrist, but they remembered that the huge stone at the door of the tomb would be agreat obstacle in their way. They said to one another “who shall roll away the stone forus?” (Mark 16:3)

The simple question encompasses the mournful enquiry of the entire universe. In man’spursuit for happiness lays a huge rock that completely blocks the road, which is theinevitability of death. Who among the mighty could remove the barrier? In man’s ageold quest for immortality, the stone of doubt, uncertainty, and unbelief has stopped allprogress. Who could lift the formidable mass of death and destruction and bring lifeand immortality to light? (2Timothy 1:10)

The women who visited Jesus tomb found there were three difficulties, the stone itselfwas huge; it was stamped with the seal of Roman law; and it was guarded by therepresentatives of power. For mankind there are the same three difficulties. Deathitself was a huge stone, not to be moved by any strength known to mortals. Death wasclearly sent by God as a penalty for offenses against his law. How could it be averted, how could it be removed? The real seal of God’s vengeance was affixed on thatSepulchre’s mouth and how could that seal be broken? The big Question is whocould roll away the stone?

Finally they came to the tomb of Christ, but it was empty, for Jesus had risen. Here isthe answer to the world’s inquiry as to whether there is another life; will bodies liveagain, as Jesus lives? Do not grieve any longer around the grave, you mourners, asthose who are without hope, for since Jesus Christ is risen, the dead in Christ will risealso, wipe away those tears, for the believers grave is no longer a place of mourning.“He was delivered for our offences”.

Beloved let us rejoice in this, in the empty tomb of Christ, our sin has been put awayforever; therefore, death has also been destroyed most effectively. Our sins were thegreat stone that shut the mouth of the sepulchre and held us captive in death anddarkness and despair, like the stone.

Our sins have now been rolled away forever, and death is no longer a dark and drearydungeon, the waiting room of hell. Instead, it is a perfumed bedroom, a sitting room, the waiting room of heaven, for as surely as Jesus rose his people must also be madealive. There is nothing to prevent the resurrection of believers. The stone that couldkeep us in the prison has been rolled away. If you will build on the “Living stone”(1Pet 2:4) of Christ Jesus and rest on him who is a proven cornerstone, “Chosen….andprecious”, then you will blessed superabundantly

After leaving the Garden, Adam and Eve faced a future which demanded a newtrust and carried a new hope. The slavery in Egypt came to an end on the night ofthe Exodus, but a new time of testing in the wilderness loomed ahead. Christ diedand rose again on Easter, bringing hope for the Christian in glory.

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. So be wise as serpentsand innocent as doves” (Matt 10:16). Armed with love and patience, carryingthe Gospel of peace, they journeyed into the world, defenceless sheep they seemedto be. “WOLVES,” there were aplenty. They moved by faith to conquer theworld for Jesus, twelve disciples against the multitudes of the Nations.

The history mixed with legends presents an odyssey stranger than fiction. Themoral might easily be drawn that wolves are more powerful than sheep, that eviltriumphs. James proclaimed the Gospel of the Lord’s death and resurrection inJerusalem. The “Wolves” cornered him at a temple wall and threw him over tothe rocks below. He did not die and they stoned him to death. Peter carried theGospel of Jesus to Rome. The wolf pack closed in and crucified him head down.John, the beloved disciple, was banished to Patmos, by the Roman Wolves. Hedied in Ephesus proclaiming the love of God. Bartholomew was flayed. Thomaswas targeted and stoned to death by arrows and spears. The list goes on for thedisciples. But it by no means stops there.

Many of the disciples went out as sheep and met the wolves of the world as theycarried on the mission work. St. Paul ran headlong into the wolves at every turn.He was beaten, banished, imprisoned, and finally, he was beheaded. So thegreat plan of the Holy Spirit for evangelizing the world began. Beginning inJerusalem, the movement gets under way outward to Judea, to Samaria, and tothe uttermost parts of the world. Filled with the Holy Spirit and with the presenceof Jesus who said, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world”,and by the power of the Holy Spirit the disciples moved into the mission toevangelize the nations. It was a formidable task to remember their instructions, when they were sent on a practice run (Matt 28:20).

Pray for the Church, that it may continue its purpose of bringing Christ to the un-evangelised places and peace to the nations. Pray also for them to show thecomfort, and the wisdom of Christ to every heart.

1a. Statement of the doctrine:

1b. Formal statement concerning theperson of Jesus: “…in the one person,Jesus Christ, there are two natures, ahuman nature and a divine nature, eachin its completeness and integrity, andthese two natures are organically andindissolubly united, yet so that no thirdnature is formed thereby. In brief, orthodox doctrine forbids us either todivide the person or to confound thenatures” (Strong, ST, 673).

2b. An important emphasis, withreference to the humanity of Jesus

From the moment of His conceptionin the womb of His mother, Mary,Jesus was and is perfectly andreally human. He was truly God ineternity, and He maintained perfectdeity in His incarnation. But at thetime of His incarnation He also tookupon Himself genuine humannature; His humanity was and is fulland authentic, in form and nature.

3b. Again, this is not to deny that thereis bottomless mystery in that which theBible declares concerning the uniqueperson of Jesus. It is to affirm, however, that Jesus of Nazareth was really andgenuinely a human being. Thus, Jesusshould be conceived of as living out Hismortal life normally (though not

perpetually) under all of the restrictionsintrinsic to (unfallen) humanity.1

2a. The classic creedalstatement of the orthodoxdoctrine

1b. The definitive statement withreference to the relationship of thehuman and divine natures in the onePerson of Jesus Christ is the Creed (orDefinition) of Chalcedon; produced bythe 4th ecumenical Council (AD 451),it is a deliberate attempt to maintain anorthodox position in the face of anumber of Christological heresies whichhad infected the Christian world by thattime. The Creed of Chalcedon, which“became and continues to be, thestandard for Christological orthodoxy,”is as follows:2

Following, then, the holy fathers, weunite in teaching all men to confess theone and only Son, our Lord JesusChrist. This selfsame one is perfectboth in deity and in humanness; thisselfsame one is also actually God andactually man, with a rational soul and abody. He is of the same reality as Godas far as his deity is concerned and ofthe same reality as we ourselves as faras his humanness is concerned; thus likeus in all respects, sin only excepted. Before time began he was begotten of

the Father, in respect of his deity, andnow in these “last days,” for us andbehalf of our salvation, this selfsame onewas born of Mary the virgin, who isGod-bearer in respect of his humanness. We also teach that we apprehend thisone and only Christ-Son, Lord, only-begotten — in two natures; and we dothis without confusing the two natures, without transmuting one nature into theother, without dividing them into twoseparate categories, without contrastingthem according to area or function. Thedistinctiveness of each nature is notnullified by the union. Instead, the“properties” of each nature areconserved and both natures concur inone “person” and in one reality(hypostasis). They are not divided orcut into two persons, but are togetherthe one and only and only-begottenWord (Logos) of God, the Lord JesusChrist. Thus have the prophets of oldtestified; thus the Lord Jesus Christhimself taught us; thus the Symbol ofFathers (the Nicene Creed) has handeddown to us.

2b. With regard to the historiccommitment of Christianity to thedoctrine of Jesus’ humanity –

“Nor did the Church in her collectivecapacity ever so insist on Christ’sGodhead as to lose sight of the truth of

“ Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord” - Eph. 5:10

Page 24: According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be

24

His perfect Manhood. Whether by thesilent force of the belief of her children,or by her representative writers onbehalf of her faith, or by the formaldecisions of her councils, she has everresisted the disposition to sacrifice theconfession of Christ’s created nature tothat of His uncreated Godhood…Noris the Manhood of our Savior prizedby the Church only as a revealed dogmaintellectually essential to the formalintegrity of the Creed. Every believingChristian knows that it touches the veryheart of his inner life. What becomes ofthe one Mediator between God andman, if the Manhood whereby Heplaces Himself in contact with us menis but unreal and fictitious? Whatbecomes of His Human Example, ofHis genuine Sympathy, or His agonizingand world-redeeming Death, of Hisplenary representation of our race in

heaven, …of the ‘touch of nature’which makes Him, most holy as He is,in very deed kin with us? All is forthwithuncertain, evanescent, unreal. If Christbe not truly Man, the chasm whichparted earth and heaven has not beenbridged over. God, as before theincarnation, is still awful, remote,inaccessible.3

2a. A prevailing theological persuasionconcerning the functional (if not theontological) relationship between thedivine and human natures of Jesus:4During the period between Hisphysical conception and Hisascension to the Father, Jesusvoluntarily surrendered theindependent exercise of His divineattributes.5

The humiliation [of Christ], as theScriptures seem to show, consisted...in

that act of the preexistent Logos bywhich he gave up his divine glory withthe Father, in order to take a servantform. In this act, he resigned not thepossession, nor yet entirely the use, butrather the independent exercise, of thedivine attributes. A. H. Strong,Systematic Theology, 703

Note: There is profound and inscrutablemystery in this, and there is nosuggestion here that this formula solvesthat mystery. However, this formuladoes seem to honor what the Scripturesteach regarding the Person of Jesus.Notice specifically with reference to thissuggested formula:

i. The formula does not suggest thatJesus surrendered deity; Jesus did notsurrender any attributes of deity for anytime.

ii. However Jesus’ “self-emptying” isunderstood, it must be recognized asentirely voluntary (Phil 2:7)

iii. The teaching of Scripture is that whenJesus surrendered the independentexercise of His divine attributes, Hesurrendered them to the Holy Spirit (Mt12:28; Lk 4:14-18).6

(1) That is, in His incarnation andconsequent humiliation, Jesus becametotally subservient to the will of theFather; He became a perfect Servant, living to do the Father’s will (Jn 8:28,29;12:49). In thus submitting Himself to theFather, Jesus in His incarnationacquiesced entirely to the guidance, control and empowerment of the HolySpirit (Ac 1:2; Lk 3:21,22; Ac 10:38;Jn 3:34)

(2) This is not to suggest that Jesus waswithout the resident attributes of deity(the power to do miracles, for instance). He did not surrender the divineattributes themselves; He surrendered

“And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee:and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about” - Luke 4:14.

Page 25: According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be

25

DR. DOUG BOOKMAN

the independent exercise of thoseattributes (Isa 11:2:61:1).

b. This construct does not solve theenigma of the ontological relationshipbetween the divine and human naturesin the Theanthropic Person. (Indeed, that enigma cannot be solved.) It does, however, express the Biblical teachingconcerning the way in which Jesus ofNazareth lived out His life upon theearth, and thus reflects what the Gospelsteach concerning the functionalrelationship between those natures.

Foot Notes:

1. Origen: “Since, therefore, we see inHim qualities so human that they standin no way apart from the commonweaknesses of mortals, and qualities sodivine that they befit nothing but thehighest and ineffable nature which isdeity, the human intellect is seized withperplexity and so silenced withamazement that it cannot tell where togo, what to think or where to turn. If itdiscerns God, what it sees is mortal. Ifit thinks Him a human being, what isperceives is one returning from the deadbearing the spoils of death’s conqueredempire.

Consequently, we must gaze upon Himwith thorough fear and reverence, to theend that in one and the same subjectthe reality of a twofold nature may beexhibited to us, that on the one hand weattribute nothing unworthy or unfittingto that divine and ineffable essence, while on the other hand we make nojudgment that the actions and deeds arean illusion produced by deceptiveappearances. Obviously to set all thisforth for people and explain it in speechfar exceeds the power at once of ourdeservings, our talents, and our words.I judge, however, that it surpassed thecapacity even of the holy apostles;indeed, when all is said, the explanationof this mystery may reach even beyond

the whole created order of the heavenlypowers.”2. J. H. Hall, “Chalcedon, Council of”,Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, p2043. H. P. Liddon, The Divinity of OurLord, (Longmans, Green & Co, 1900),25-26.

4. This formulation has sometimes beendenominated “the kenotic theory.” I amuneasy with this designation on twocounts. First, the term kenosis is takenfrom Phil 2:7; however, the point beingmade by the apostle in that passage isnot directly related to the issue at stakein this theological construct. Second, theterm “kenotic theology” has beenunderstood for 200 years to refer to aChristological approach which involvesin some sense a compromise of the deityof Jesus (at least during the period ofHis mortality). [See S. M. Smirth, ,“Kenosis, Kenotic Theology,” EDT.]

Thus, the term necessarily involvesunfortunate prejudice against the pointI am trying to make here. Therelationship between the divine andhuman natures in Jesus is bottomlesslymysterious; it is inappropriate for thefinite mind to attempt to fathom thatmystery. None of the present discussionrelates to comprehending or explainingthat mystery. (Classic discussion underthe heading of kenotic theology doesinvolve that effort, however.)

The present discussion seeks to bescrupulously honest with the narrativeas it stands, to acknowledge both theclear statements and the necessaryimplications of the Gospel accounts. Inshort, though there is inscrutablemystery in what it means to say thatJesus is very God and very man, thereis no mystery whatever as to the factthat Jesus is very God and very man;both of those realities demand to behonored, even though the affirmation ofthose two realities necessarily confronts

finite man with a mystery.

5. Cf. Hawthorne, who deliberates howJesus’ deity and humanity may beembraced “without portraying a beingwho appears to be two distinct persons, one divine and one human, both existingside by side in one body, alternating inthinking and acting between the two–abeing unlike any other being in theworld..., certainly one that would not atall be like a truly human being as weknow human beings to be,” andconcludes:

“The particular view of the person ofChrist which seems to me most able todo this and which seems most inharmony with the whole of the teachingof the New Testament is the view that,in becoming a human being, the Son ofGod willed to renounce the exercise ofhis divine powers, attributes, prerogatives, so that he might live fullywithin those limitations which inhere inbeing truly human” (Presence & Power,208).

6. “Because Christ took upon Himselfthe form of a servant at His Incarnation(Phil. 2:7), He relied upon the directionand power of the Holy Spirit in Hisministry” (Dr. Larry Pettegrew, TheNew Covenant Ministry of the HolySpirit [Kregel, 2001], 57).

“And I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely” - Hos 2:18.

Nothing is more motivating to apreacher/teacher than eager listeners.Paul resoundingly thanks God for suchearnest converts as the Thessalonians. He was deeply concerned about theirsustained spiritual vitality in the face ofintense opposition and satanictemptation. When he receives wordfrom Timothy that their faith remainedstrong and robust he bursts out in praiseto God and pens down a response tothem.

In 1 Thessalonians 2:13, the apostledescribes the congregation’s attitudetowards the gospel and biblicalteaching. He writes,

…we also thank God constantly forthis, that when you received the wordof God, which you heard from us, youaccepted it not as the word of menbut as what it really is, the word ofGod, which is at work in youbelievers.

Paul remembers how these peoplerevealed eager minds and open heartsto embrace what he proclaimed tothem. This is what the word “accepted”(dechomai) indicates. It differs from“received” (paralambano) in describingthe spirit and warmth of reception. NewTestament scholar Leon Morriscompares it to welcoming a guest. Thereis a great difference between welcomingan honored guest and welcoming themailman. The mailman delivers post toa specified box and moves on. Anhonored guest is anticipated, receivesthe welcome mat, and is swiftly invitedto lodge.

Paul gives thanks to God that thesepeople at Thessalonica did not treat himor his message indifferently like anunwanted ad in the mailbox. Somepeople listen to sermons or gospelpresentations with their arms folded andtheir eyes on the clock. They are notopen to accept what is said and maynot even crack open the Bible to followalong. They receive biblical instructionreluctantly or indifferently. Truediscipleship entails being prepared tolisten without erecting walls ofresistance.

Furthermore, eager hearers revealconviction. Some may sit under faithfulbiblical exposition with skepticism, determined resistance, or uncertainconfusion regarding truth claims. Thegospel message may be but anotherproclamation of reality in a worldcluttered with spiritual barkersclamoring for attention. The spiritual andphilosophical options for people tochoose from in first centuryThessalonica have only magnified in ourpresent day.

Paul rejoices that the Thessalonianconverts were not gullible people

“For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed” - 1 Cor. 5:3.

Page 27: According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be

27

believing everything told them. Theyrecognized the divine authority of God’svoice in the message. They knew it wasthe truth of God and not a slickpersuasive speech by man. Thischanged everything. If the gospel wasnot accepted through Scripture as theauthoritative word of God, the holy lifeGod prescribed for believers would alsobe up for question. Many people claimto be Christians, but they balk at God’scommands to live holy and blamelesslives or argue over the validity orrelevancy of His precepts. That is nothealthy and reveals a rebellious spirit. The Thessalonians did not quibble atall. They heard God speak and movedto obey.

Finally, Paul offers thanks to God forthe effectiveness of the truth impactingtheir lives. God’s word did not merelyfill their brains. The truth propositionsgave light to their heart, motives, thoughtprocesses, and life choices. In this way,

it “energizes” (energeo) those receivingit. F. F. Bruce explains, “The word ofhuman beings, however wise insubstance or eloquent in expression, cannot produce spiritual life: this is theprerogative of the word of God, whichworks effectually in believers.”

Those who have been truly changed byGod do not merely attend churchservices or attempt to live by moralplatitudes. Rather, their hearts havebeen transformed causing them to livea certain way. This transformationcomes about through their reception ofthe gospel message that they recognizederives from God and is not devisedby man. Therefore, any evangelisticefforts should not short change themessage or apologize for its demandson a person’s life. Hungry people willeat it up. Eager and open listeners willweigh its implications and embrace it.

Healthy congregations continue to be

open and eager to hear the word ofthe Lord. They carefully discern thetruth of God like the Berean Christians, but if they see the Scriptures laid outplainly and commanding obediencethey eagerly accept it. It then works tochange and mature them in their faithin Christ.

The starting point in understanding your relationship with God is realizing that He isthe Supreme King of the universe. God is sovereign over the world and all that Hedoes is governed by love. The reason God can rightfully claim this role is because Heis the Creator. God made the world and everything in it, so he owns it.

This means that God made you. God created people who shared some characteristicswith him. The Bible describes this as being made in God’s image. He made the firsthumans, Adam and Eve, and put them in charge of the world he created. We werecreated to rule the world, to take care of it and to enjoy it’s beauty.

However, God did not intend for us to do as we please. God’s plan and desire wasthat men and women would live under God’s authority, obey his commands and worshipHim. That was God’s plan, and his plan was very good.

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for youcreated all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. (Revelation4:11)

“And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever” - Rev. 4:9.

Ad fontes is a Latin expression whichmeans “[back] to the sources” (lit.“to the fountains”). The phraseepitomizes the renewed study of Greekand Latin classics in Renaissancehumanism.

Seminary students approach study ofthe biblical languages with a wide rangeof attitudes, from enthusiasticexcitement to fear and trembling.

For those that find themselvesapprehensive about learning ancientlanguages, some encouragement maybe found in the writing of DesideriusErasmus (ca. 1466-1536), the Dutchhumanist who produced the firstpublished Greek New Testament in1516. With the purpose of pointing hisreaders to the correct path of biblicalinterpretation, in his Methodus Erasmusdiscussed at length the preparation of“a theologian who prefers to expresswhat he professes in life rather than insyllogisms” (§ 24). His program wasfounded on immersion in Scripture, forit is the food of spiritual transformation(§§ 3, 22). As such, he exhorted hisreaders to learn the biblical languagesof Greek and Hebrew, as well as Latin(§ 4):

Now, as to what pertains to thoseletters by the support of which we reachthis end more easily, the first concernmust be the thorough learning of thethree languages, Latin, Greek, andHebrew, because it is agreed that allthe mystery of scripture is made knownby them.

Dear reader, do not here shy away fromme because of the difficulty of thebusiness as if you had been repelledwith a club. If you lack neither a teachernor the spirit, these three languages maybe learned with almost less trouble thanthe pitiful stammering of half a language, undoubtedly on account of the culpableignorance of the teachers. Nor do wedemand that you are taken forwards bythe miracle of eloquence: it is enough ifyou progress towards a certainneatness and discrimination, a mean, which suffices for making judgments. For, to disregard all other disciplines, understanding what is written isimpossible if we do not know thatlanguage in which it is written.

In the early 16th century, manytheologians considered the Vulgate’sLatin New Testament to be the New

Testament and were happy to read theBible in (that) translation alone. Erasmuswould hear none of that. For, even thoseof advanced years (he gives examplesof theologians in their 40s) hadsuccessfully begun studies in Greek andHebrew—Erasmus himself returned toHebrew at the age of 49—and “thereis nothing which the human mind cannotdo if there is the will and the desire” (§7). He therefore encouraged pursuit ofthe languages, for it was important togo back “to the original sources—orany sources whatever” because of“linguistic peculiarities that cannot beexpressed in a different language so asto retain the same light, their native graceand equal emphasis” (§ 5).

While in no way disparaging biblicaltranslation—for in his published editionof the New Testament, Erasmus himselfprovided a revised Latin translation aswell—Erasmus was encouraging thosewho taught the Bible to avoid the pitfallsencountered by those who work fromtranslation alone. The work of thebiblical teacher is proper, scholarlywork that requires a lifetimecommitment of study among a varietyof disciplines. And while it is more thanhard work, it is also no less than that.

Steve Young

In last month’s article “What is Man?”March 2016, I wrote about the dignitythat mankind possesses as a result ofbeing created by God, in the image ofGod. I noted the parallelism in Psalm8:4 and that “the son of man” may bealluding to each person’s relationship tothe first man (Adam) in the fact that weare all sinners as a result of Adam’scorporate headship (Romans 5:12–21).Despite our inherent sin nature—ourinborn rebellion against the holy God—it is evident that God still cares for us,

in his personal sacrifice made on ourbehalf.

The means of our reconciliation to Godis summarized in a verse like 2Corinthians 5:17, quoted above.

Paul begins, “if anyone is in Christ”indicating that what follows applies toa person who has placed their faith inJesus Christ for their salvation, the onlyhope for an expiation of their sins. Whatdoes Paul say about this person? Hemakes one statement about that person,

then goes on to explain it further. If aperson is in Christ, he says, “he is a newcreation.” Let’s dwell on this for amoment.

We are all creatures made by theCreator. Outside of Christ, we arecreatures bound up in our sin, withouthope. Christ died for our sins, yes. Butin our sin, as sons and daughters ofAdam, we don’t even have the abilityto put faith in Christ; we cannot makethat choice. We need a miraculouswork of God to even give us that abilityto choose. That is the miracle ofregeneration, re-creation. God madeus once and we were creatures underthe curse of sin through the corporateheadship of the first disobedient man,Adam. Now, if you are in Christ, Godhas made you again, a new creatureunder a new headship, that is Christ.

There is only One who has the abilityto create something from nothing. Thereis only One who has the ability to givelife to dust. And there is only One whohas the ability to give life to a dead spirit,

“And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus” - 1 Tim 1:14.

Page 31: According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be

31

which is what we were until Godcreated us anew.

Paul goes on to explain further whatcharacterizes this “new creature” bycontrasting the old and the new. “Theold things,” he writes, “passed away.”The tense form he uses in the originallanguage for this verb, “passed away,”and the context, indicate that the actionof passing away is already complete. Our sinful nature—the old creature—is not steadily passing away as the newcreature takes its place. No, this passingaway was finished some time ago.Indeed, it was finished at the momentof our regeneration.

Now Paul turns to the flipside, the“new.” But before he does so, he writesone extra word—Behold! He didn’t

have to write this, but he does becausehe wants us to pay attention to whathe’s about to say. And what is it that hewants us to pay attention to? “Newthings have come.” Not only did the oldthings pass away, but they have beenreplaced by new things. Again, we mustalso pay attention to the tense form ofthe original Greek used here; it isdifferent from what he used to describethe passing of the old things. Here, thetense form indicates something alreadycompleted but with lasting results.

I like to use the analogy of cooking anegg. If you crack a raw egg open, howwould you describe it? Runny. Yellowyolk. Clear albumen. If you cook thategg, how would you describe it afterbeing cooked? Firm and rubbery.

Yellow and white. You have cookedthat egg—the cooking is complete, butthe results are lasting. Likewise, Paul iswriting about the new things that havecome. These new things came at thetime of your spiritual rebirth, your re-creation, but the results in your life areforever lasting.

Just what are these “new things?” Wewill look at that next month. For now, though, we can take joy, brothers andsisters, in knowing that even in ourrebellion God still regarded us as worthyof his Son. We can take joy in knowingthat he, by the power of his Spirit, inone instant, quickened us from spiritualdeath to everlasting life.

You sat next bench with me for years. We shared our dreams, our joys, and tears.A friend to me you were indeed,A friend who helped me when in need.

My faith in you was strong and sure.We had such trust as should endure. No words between us ever rose,Our friends were alike – and so, our foes.

What sadness, then, my friend, to find,That, after all, you weren’t so kind. The day my life on earth did end,I found you weren’t a faithful friend.

For all those years we spent on earth,You never talked of the second birth. You never spoke of my lost soul,And of the Christ who’d make me whole.

“You Sat Next Bench With Me For Years”

I’m lost today eternally,And tell you now my earnest plea. You cannot do a thing for me-No words today my bonds will free.

But do not err, my friend, again.Do all you can for souls of men.Plead with them now quite earnestly-Lest they be not cast in Hell with me!

1. Christ’s Offer of theKingdom.a) Because of Old Testament promises,Israel expected a literal kingdom ruledby the Messiah. Christ spoke theparable of not putting a new patch onan old garment, and of not putting newwine in old wineskins (Luke 5:36:39)to show that He did not intend to buildon Pharisaism, but came to set up a newand different Kingdom.

b) The Good Shepherd and Hissheep parable (John 10:1-18) wasspoken because of the Pharisees whorejected Jesus Christ as Messiah, toshow that His own would recognize Him,leave Pharisaism’s bondage and enterthe freedom of Christ’s Kingdom.

c) The lost sheep, lost coin and lostson parable (Luke 15:1-32) was spokento correct the Pharisees wrong view that

God hated sinners and rejoiced in asinners’ death because the sinner wasthen removed from God’s presenceforever. They reasoned that one’s goalin life should be to produce enough goodworks to enter heaven. These 3 parablesshow the great search by the ownersand joy when found. These show God’sgreat love for sinners to return to God.

d) The blind leading the blind (Luke6:39) warns against following thePharisees described as spiritually blindshepherds trying to lead spiritually blindfollowers.

e) The King preparing a weddingbanquet for his son (Matthew 22:1-14)taught that Christ was inviting thatgeneration to the Kingdom. Since thewedding banquet pictured Christ’smillennial kingdom, this parable teachesChrist’s offer of the Kingdom to theJews.

f) The narrow way to life that few find, and the broad way to destruction thatmany travel (Matthew 7:13,14) warnedagainst the danger of rejecting Christ’sinvitation just given.

g) The wise man building his house onthe rock and surviving the storm, pictured those hearing and doing Christ’steachings who enter the Kingdom bytrusting Christ. The foolish man buildinghis house on the sand that collapsed inthe storm pictured those rejectingChrist’s words, accepting the Phariseesdoctrine, and being excluded from theKingdom (Matt. 7:24-27).

2. Israel’s Rejection ofChrist’s offers is seen in theseparables:a) The Physician who was called on toheal himself (Luke 4:23) pictured Israelrejecting Christ, calling Him a sinner

“ And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him,If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean” - Mark 1:40.

Page 33: According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be

33

needing to deal with his own sins beforeHe could offer salvation to others.

b) The Wedding banquet (Matthew22:1-14) showed the offer and rejectionof the Kingdom by the guests (Israel)who were busy with their personalpursuits. The Great Banquet (Luke14:16-24) showed the invited guests(Israel) ignoring the banquet by makingexcuses not to come.

c) The landowner who planted avineyard (Matthew 21:33-44) taughtthat the servants (Old Testamentprophets) were beaten, stoned and killedby Israel when they were sent to collectthe harvest (spiritual fruit). Thelandowner then sent his son (Christ) tocollect the harvest, but the tenants(Israel) killed him. This pictured Israelrejecting the Kingdom and crucifyingChrist.

3. Christ Postpones theKingdom. The unconditional Abrahamic covenant(Genesis 12:1-3; 13:14:17; 15:18-20;17:4-8) promised that Abraham’sphysical descendants would dwell in theland forever. The unconditional Davidiccovenant (II Samuel 7:16) promised thatone of David’s descendants would ruleon David’s Throne forever. BecauseIsrael rejected Christ’s offer, David’sKingdom was not cancelled butpostponed.

a) Christ spoke the parable of 10pounds (Luke 19:11-27) to teach thatHis Kingdom offer was beingwithdrawn and postponed. Christ wasthe nobleman who went into a farcountry to receive a Kingdom and toreturn to rule (v.12). Hence, Israel’srejection of Christ did not stop His rightto rule.

b) The watching porter (Mark 13:34-37) spoke of Christ’s postponement ofand absence from the Kingdom for along time period, and our watchfulnessin His absence.

c) The householder who planted avineyard parable (Matt. 21:33-46)taught that the Kingdom would be takenfrom first century Israel and given tothe nation Israel at Christ’s return.(v.43).

4. First Century IsraelJudged. In the cleansed house parable(Matthew 12:43-45), Christ picturedIsrael as having experienced a cleansingministry by John the Baptist. Thatcleansing was not permanent, becausethe unclean spirit that left the house ofIsrael returned with 7 other more wickedspirits, so that the final state of that houseof Israel was worse because of theirrejection of Christ than before John theBaptist’s ministry. “Even so shall it bealso unto this wicked generation”.(v.45).

5. The New Mystery Form ofthe Kingdom.Because Israel rejected Christ’s offerof the Messianic Kingdom, the offerwas withdrawn, postponed andsubstituted with judgment by theRomans in 70 AD. The mystery formof the Kingdom known as the Churchage was then introduced.

Many of the parables revealed thecharacter of the Church age, such as:

i) The Sower (Matthew 13:3-23). Thechurch age would be characterized bysowing the seed of the Word of God(Luke 8:12) throughout the world byJesus and his followers, met by varyingresponses depending on the attitude ofthe hearers.

ii) The Wheat and Tares (Matthew13:24-30). In the Church age Satan willtry to defeat God’s program by sowingweeds (darnel) among the good seed.Satan’s seed will imitate and closelyresemble God’s seed. Only at harvestcan both kinds be distinguished.Christians who sow the word of God in

the church age may expect Satan’sopposition to spreading Christ’s gospel.

iii) The seed growing by itself (Mark4:26-29). As physical seed germinatesand grows because of life in the seed,so the mystery form of the Kingdom willgrow because of life-giving power in theseed of the word of God sown inpeople’s hearts.

iv) The mustard seed (Matthew13:31,32). The mystery form of theKingdom would begin insignificantly butgrow to great size. The Church agebegan with 11 disciples and grew tomillions of people in Christendom.

v) The leaven (Matthew 13:33-35).When the Church age began, evil(leaven) would be present, which wouldspread throughout Christendom topermeate the whole system by Christ’sreturn.

vi) The Hidden treasure and the Pearl(Matt. 13:44-46). Christ’s plan in thisChurch age is to die on the cross, topurchase a treasure (Israel) and a Pearl(the church) out of the field (the world).

vii)The Dragnet (Matthew 13:47-50).During the Church age the gospel willgo out like a dragnet, catching two kindsof fish, good and bad, useful and useless. At the end of the tribulation the angelswill cast the wicked into a furnace offire, and allow the righteous into themillennium.

6. Warnings to Prepare forChrist’s Millennial Kingdom. In Matthew 24:3 the disciples askedJesus “what shall be the sign of thycoming and of the end of the world?”Jesus listed many signs that would befulfilled in the 7 year tribulation(Matthew 24:4-26). Some (16) are:Deception (v.4,11,24), False Christ’s(v.5), Wars (v.6), famines, pestilencesand earthquakes (v.7), persecution (v.9),disloyalty (v.10), false prophets (v.11),little love (v.12), worldwide gospelpreaching (v.14), Jewish temple in

“When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” - Acts 1:6.

Page 34: According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be

Dr. Keith Piper

Jerusalem, (v.15), great trouble(v.21,22), false prophets showing greatsigns and wonders (v.24) sun and moondarkened (v.29), the fig tree of Israelbudding (v.32- 34). These signs will begiven to unsaved Israel to warn themthat the Kingdom is being offered againand of Messiah’s soon arrival.

a) The budding Fig tree parable(Matthew 24:32-34) picturing Israel’snationhood warns that Christ’s comingis near, at the doors. Question: Howshould we respond to these signs?

b) The watching doorkeeper parable(Mark 13:33-37) teaches watchfulnessand faithfulness in serving Jesus, because we don’t know when Christwill return.

c) The watching homeowner parable(Matt. 24:42-44) teaches us to watchand be prepared. As thieves comewhen unexpected, so Christ’s return atthe rapture will be at an unexpectedtime.

d) The wise and evil servants parable(Matthew 24:45-51) teaches Christiansto be faithful to our Bible teachingministry in view of Christ’s return. Afaithful and wise servant will fulfil hisBible teaching work, but a foolish andevil servant will neglect his Bibleteaching ministry and will live forhimself and his fleshly lusts. He will beseverely rebuked by Christ at His returnand be deprived of the joys of Christ’sKingdom. We must watch & be readyfor Christ’s return.

7. Three Judgments Beforethe Millennium. This age will end in judgment, details ofwhich are given in Matthew 25.

a) The wise and foolish virgins(Matthew 25:1-13): Judgment onliving Israel. After Christ returns toearth (Matthew 24:30), angels willregather living Israel from all over theearth (v.31), back to the land promisedto Abraham (Genesis 12:7).

Deuteronomy 30:1-10 teaches thatIsrael’s entry to the Millennium kingdomblessings depended on repentance andreceiving Christ as their Messiah andSaviour. Hence no unsaved Jew orGentile will enter the Millennium (Ezekiel20:38).

The wise and foolish virgins parablestates that Israelites living at the time ofChrist’s return will be judged to see whichJews are prepared to enter the Kingdom(by possessing the Holy Spirit) and whichJews are not prepared to enter theKingdom (by being unsaved). Thevirgins in an Oriental wedding refer toguests at the banquet (Jews).

The bride is the Church (Rev. 19:7,8;21:9; II Cor. 11:2; Eph. 5:23-32) whoappears on earth with the Bridegroomwho is Jesus Christ. Hence livingIsraelites (10 virgins) will be brought backto the land for a judgment to see who isprepared to enter Messiah’s MillennialKingdom (5 wise virgins) and who is notprepared and will therefore be excluded(5 foolish virgins).

b) The sheep and the goats (Matthew25:31-46): Judgment on livingGentiles. “When the Son of man shallcome in His glory....before him shall begathered all nations: and he shall separatethem as a shepherd divides his sheepfrom the goats.” (v.31,32).

The sheep will enter the Millenniumbecause of how they treated Christ andhelped His brothers in the tribulation.Their works prove the genuineness oftheir saving faith, because no one issaved by works. “Brothers” (Matthew25:40) refers to persecuted Israelites asa whole in the tribulation, or to thepersecuted 144,000 Israelite preachers(Revelation 7). Hence, the goats on theleft will not have faith, and will not haveproduced works of helping persecutedIsraelites. Sheep will enter and goats willbe excluded from the Kingdom. Hencein 2 judgments the whole world will bejudged to see who qualifies for entry intoChrist’s millennial Kingdom.

c) 5,2,1 Talents (Matthew 25:14-30):Judgment to Reward Believers’Faithfulness.

A master travelling to a far countrydelivered his goods to his servants, andin his absence required them to tradethese goods for a profitable return. When the master returned, theseservants were called to give account oftheir success in trading. Those foundfaithful were allowed to enter the joy oftheir Lord and were made ruler overmany things (v.21,23). On the otherhand, the one servant who through fear, hid his master’s talent in the earth, returned the talent with a nil profit.Because he was unfaithful he wasexcluded from the Kingdom, lost thetalent, and

was denied rule in the millennium. Thosewho are faithful and prepared will enterthe Kingdom and will be made ruler overman things, with great authority. Christpredicted this judgment to occur justbefore the millennium in Matthew24:40,41 when he said:

“Then shall two be in the field: the oneshall be taken (away in judgment), andthe other left (to enter Christ’s millennialKingdom). Two women shall be grindingat the mill; the one shall be taken (awayin judgment), and the other left (to enterChrist’s Kingdom)”.

“The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?” - Matth 22:44.

Dear Readers,

We are happy to present to you the 10th issue of "Wisdom forthe Heart,” a monthly bilingual magazine. The Good News Bible College and Seminary is committed topursuing excellence in the exposition of Scripture and Godlinessin Church Leadership.1. We exist for the purpose of developing Godly men devotedto the exposition of Scripture: and to faithful ministry leadersfully dedicated to pleasing Christ. We need men who prize Christabove popularity, and who hold to truth rather than giving in tocompromise. We want men that love purity above sensuality, and seek brokenness of spirit more than earthly riches or power.2. We shepherd leaders to work and build up the local church.Christ promised to build and grow only one body-the Church. We see the Biblical mandate to "preach the word", as thecornerstone of church ministry. When the text of scripture ispreached it transforms and empowers both the preacher andhis flock. Year after year our students undergo rigorous trainingboth in theology and exposition. We see this training of Pastorsto be part of the unstoppable plan of Christ to build his churchboth in India and around the world. Therefore we want godly men that want to win souls, men thatwant to shepherd others by equipping the saints to do the workof the ministry and to plant churches throughout all of India. We are in need of Co-ordinates from every state in India, whoare passionate about providing sound theological educationthrough the Good News Bible College in their respective regions. Please contact us to learn how you can become a partner.

A Counterfeit Message

Another way Satan attacks theauthenticity of Christ’s full deity and fullhumanity is not to just outright deny itthrough his false teachers, but to dilutethe uniqueness of the virgin birth bycounterfeiting the message.

Just study the religions of the world andyou will be exposed to stories of virginbirths. The Romans believed that Zeusimpregnated Semele without contactwith her, and that she conceivedDionysus, lord of the earth.

The ancient Sumerians, long before thebirth of Christ, inscribed on a wall thatwas discovered centuries later byarchaeologists, that their emperor wascreated in the womb of his mother bytheir gods.

Six hundred years before the birth ofChrist, it was claimed that the goddessof procreation brought about theconception of King Sennacherib in hismother’s womb.

These stories can be interpreted in oneof two ways:

First, you could arrive at the conclusionthat all of these virgin conception storiesmean Christianity simply borrowed theidea from other religions and came upwith its own version.

Secondly, you could understand it as theenemy’s strategy to predate Christianitywith similar versions of the gospel, sothat when the event of the gospeloccurred, people could say, “That’snice…but it’s old stuff.”

Now, did Satan know ahead of time whatGod had in mind regarding a virgin-bornMessiah? Yes. In the Garden of Eden,God said to Satan,

...the seed of the woman will crushthe head of the serpent… (Genesis3:15)

Every other time in the Bible that youread about seed, or literally, sperm oroffspring, it is in reference to the spermand offspring of man. But in Genesis, chapter 3, verse 15, you find this phrase;it is the only time in the Bible that youread about “the seed of the woman.”

Why? Because she conceives withouta man and her offspring, which isuniquely independent of the seed of man, will crush or defeat the serpent. This isa reference to the Messiah defeatingSatan.

Add to that another text that Satan wouldhave access to, centuries before thebirth of Christ.

…Behold a virgin will be with childand bear a son, and she will call Hisname Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)

Satan knows about all of this. Hehappens to be very bright although hestill refuses to surrender. He says, “Aha!God’s plan is for the Messiah to be virginborn. So, I’ll dispense and originate andmanipulate and encourage and facilitatethe development of pagan thought toincorporate the idea of virgin birth.”

So there is a mother who one day seesa great white elephant enter her bellyand she conceives and births a baby boynamed Buddha.

Vishnu, after reincarnations as a fish, tortoise, boar, and lion, eventuallydescends into the womb of a woman andis born to her as her son named Krishna, and Hinduism is created.

During the days of Christ, the legendpersisted that Alexander the Great wasvirgin born by the power of Zeus througha snake that impregnated his mother,Olympias.

He too, was the son of god, born of avirgin. Imagine—these major worldreligions and philosophies claim a son, born as the offspring of their god.

So Christ is born of a virgin and theworld can easily say, “We’ve heard thatbefore. Christianity just has its ownversion of a virgin-born-son myth.”

Your philosophy professor in collegemight tell you that is what happened, and

“ His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God,The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” - Isaiah 9:6.

Page 37: According to Jewish law, the body of Jesus had to be

37

that is what he believes. He believes it,and he will go to hell. That is unless hellis a myth too—which he is dependingon.

Satan counterfeits in so many details—even down to the point where thescribes had grown accustomed to thetitle, “King of the Jews.” Herod had thattitle already, remember? And CaesarAugustus had already taken the title,“The Savior of the World.”

So the angels appeared to the shepherdsand announced, “Listen, we have a greatnews, born to you this day in the city ofDavid is the Savior.”

“We’ve heard that before.”

Satan has counterfeited so many of thegreat truths of Christianity: the virginbirth, resurrection, begin born again, baptism.

In pagan religions, predating JesusChrist, initiates into pagan beliefs weresaid to be “born again.” They wentthrough ceremonies involving thecovering of blood and, after comingthrough the initiating rights, wereconsidered born again to a new life. They were then given a cup of milk todrink as if they were newborn babes.

Did Jesus Christ and His church borrowthese ideas? No, Satan had already beenat work through his teachers and worldreligions to counterfeit the claims ofChrist.

The virgin birth of Christ was one ofthe key doctrines Satan sought toundermine. Why? Because he knows, better than most, that without the virginbirth of the Messiah, who is fully Godand fully man, the world is without aSavior.

Ravi Zacharias wrote about talk showhost Larry King, in his response to thequestion, “If you could select any oneperson across all of history to interview, who would it be?”

Mr. King’s answer was that he wouldlike to interview Jesus Christ. When the

questioner followed with, “And whatwould you like to ask Him?” Kingreplied, “I would like to ask Him if Hewas indeed virgin-born. The answer tothat question would define history forme.”

If the story of Christ’s virgin birth is justanother legend, just another story, thenso is the rest of what the Bible tells usabout Him. You can just write it all off.But if it is true, it does indeed define thetruth of history for us all.

It is no wonder then, that one of the mostimportant verses in the New Testamentabout Christ is one of the first verses inHis earthly biography.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was asfollows: When His mother Mary hadbeen betrothed to Joseph, before theycame together she was found to bewith child by the Holy Spirit.(Matthew 1:18)

What a mystery!

In Luke’s account, the angel Gabrielexplains to young Mary how it willhappen.

…behold, you will conceive in yourwomb, and bear a son, and you shallname Him Jesus. Mary said to theangel, “How can this be, since I ama virgin?” The angel answered andsaid to her, “The Holy Spirit willcome upon you, and the power of theMost High will overshadow you…”(Luke 1:31, 34–35)

That explains it! Does it? No. Do youunderstand how God can fertilize an eggin a virgin? No.

No more than I can understand howGod’s Son could die for sins I have notAh, but in that case, Jesus had to bemore than fully human. That’s right—Jesus also had to be fully God. Only onewho is fully God could bear the penaltyfor all the sins of the world.

[Christ] is the satisfaction for oursins; and not of ours only, but alsofor those of the whole world (John 2:2)

How do you bear the sins of the wholeworld? We would have trouble bearingthe load and guilt of our own sin, right?

If you are a good person and you sinonly three times a day—that is great! But that is still a thousand sins a year.

Now multiply a thousand by your age, give or take two or three years beforeyou consciously began to sin. For someof us, conscious sin began at a veryyoung age; some before we were barelyhome from the hospital. When you hadan unkind thought; did some selfish act;had a lustful idea; had a covetousthought; did not do something you shouldhave done—the Bible says that is alsosin.

But you are a good person and you onlycommit three sins a day. I can do thatbefore I even get to work! I am lateand I am going to need to speed—thatis one; I think, “Wow, I like that guy’spickup truck better than mine”—that istwo; I think, “Hey, don’t pull in front ofme, you pagan!”

Okay, that is my three for the day—andI just left my house.

Frankly, there is no human way I couldpossibly atone for all my sins much lessthe sins and sinfulness of everyone inmy neighborhood. I could not atone formillions of people, and I certainly couldnot atone for the whole world.

Only God could pay that penalty. Aha!That is precisely the point!
