What is Accoya ® Wood?

• Sustainably grown wood which has been modified by a process called acetylation

• Acetylation increases the amount of naturally occurring acetyl molecules and reduces the amount of hydroxyls

• Acetylation improves the timber’s durability, stability, and service life

• Ideal for exterior applications such as windows, doors, cladding, decking and outdoor furniture.

Accoya® Wood Technology

• Acetylation changes wood at the molecular level

• Nothing is added that is not already present in wood

= =

Accoya® Wood Technology

• Only naturally occurring wood compounds are added to the wood

• Result is a non-toxic, fully recyclable wood

• Modifies the wood to its core• Unlike biocide impregnation

• Can be cut or profiled without exposing unprotected surfaces

• The acetylation process is irreversible• No risk of leaching/loss

• Permanent improvement in performance

• Acetylation changes wood at the molecular level

• Durability is achieved by stopping the rot fungi from digesting wood, not by killing them with toxins

The Accoya® Wood Production Process

Worldwide Independent Testing

• Accsys Technologies has partnered a number of professional testing facilities and research institutes throughout the world.

• These authoritative partners are able to independently prove Accoya’s performance product benefits.

Retained natural strength and hardness

Consistent measurable quality from surface to core

Key Accoya® Wood BenefitsClass 1 Durability: lasting at least 50 years above ground and 25 years in-ground or fresh water

Outstanding dimensional stability & improved hardness

Improved insect & pest barrier

Consistent supply from sustainably managed certified sources including FSC and PEFC

Class 1 Durability = Greater Value, More Applications

⇒ Accoya® is a viable substitute for ⇒ less sustainable species

⇒ metal and mineral based products

⇒ Accoya® products require less frequent replacement

⇒ Lower lifetime cost

Accoya® wood more durable than Teak in 6 year Scion Test

• Scion concludes that Accoya® wood is more durable than four of the most naturally durable species and CCA treated wood treated to ground contact specification .• The study also proved that Accoya® wood is a superior treatment to alternative methods of radiata pine modification.• The particularly severe New Zealand field trials tested Accoya® wood in fungus decay chambers and exterior ground tests against the traditionally durable cypress, cedar, kwila (also known as merbau) and teak timbers. .

13 Year Window L Joints TestASA treated – Severe Attack & Failure• Marked softening and weakening of fibres typical of fungal decay; more than 25% of the visible area affected • Very severe and extensive rot; tenon often capable of being easily broken

Acetylated – slight attack• Slight discolouration, often dark and in streaks• no significant softening or weakening of wood fibres

This test indicates that acetylated wood has potential for use in long life exterior joinery applications

Durability Comparison

Superior stability = greater functionality, potential & value

⇒ Enables use of wider boards & thinner widths

⇒ Reduced unit costs

⇒ Better performance

⇒ Precision joinery

⇒ New product potential

Material Handling

• Accoya® wood that needs processing, gluing or coating should be stored in closed or well ventilated area to prevent water/moisture uptake

• During transport and storage, it is recommended that Accoya® is covered in a breathable plastic barrier

• Direct exposure to water and changing climate (temperature and humidity) should be avoided

• Accoya® wood is identified and traced by its packaging labels/number and it is important to retain all relevant documents

Fasteners & Hardware• Like other durable woods, Accoya® wood

slightly acidic, therefore it is imperative that Zinc Plated or Galvanized Steel fasteners are not used

• To avoid fastener corrosion issues it is recommend the following materials for fasteners:

– Stainless Steel (304 or 316)

• Especially needed for structural applications

– Brass

– Chrome-plated

– Aircraft Anodized Aluminum

– Epoxy or Ceramic-Coated

• Avoidance techniques

– Isolation

– Barriers

– Additional coatings

• Pre-drilling holes may be necessary

Gluability• Accoya® wood can be glued using many

commonly used wood adhesive systems

– Polyurethane (PU)

– Emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI)

– Two-part epoxies

– Phenol resorcinol formaldehyde (PRF)

– Polyvinyl acetate (PVA)• With extended clamp time

• Adhesive manufacturers that have tested with Accoya ® :

– Franklin Adhesives

– HB Fuller

– Hexion

– Momentive Performance Materials • Formerly GE Sillicones

Coatings• Accoya® wood coatings performance due to:

– Outstanding dimensional stability

• Both opaque and translucent film forming coatings can be used with good results

– End-grain should be sealed

• Accoya® wood can be finished with both semi and non-film forming systems
