Accutane, a medication used to treat acne, has
recently been linked to dangerous health
conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease
(IBD).
Page 3
This disorder is an umbrella term for many
health problems including Crohn’s disease
and Ulcerative Colitis, and is noted for being
treatable, but not curable.
Page 4
Ulcerative Colitis causes ulcers to form along the inner lining of the colon.
Crohn’s Disease - parts of the small and large intestines (and may cause problems at other points along the gastrointestinal tract.)
Page 5
Symptoms
Despite these differences, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease can cause similar symptoms, including:
•Recurring diarrhea
•Abdominal pain
•Weight loss and malnutrition
•Fatigue
•Blood in stool, which can lead to anemia
Page 6
Patients may also experience secondary
complications beyond the primary symptoms.
Page 7
These primarily include the following:
• inflammation of other parts of the body, such
as joints, eyes, or the liver.
Page 8
People with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
may also be at an increased risk for colorectal
cancer.
Page 9
While IBD cannot be cured, it can usually be
managed with a combination of anti-
inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressant
drugs (which prevent the body’s immune
system from making inflammations worse.)
Page 10
In severe cases, surgical procedures may also
be required.
Unfortunately, even when these options make
the symptoms go into remission, they can recur
at any point in a patient’s life.

If you have developed IBD symptoms such as
blood in stool, pain in the abdomen, and
diarrhea, because of Accutane use, you may be
able to take legal action against the
pharmaceutical company.
