Welcome ACE Friends and Family.

On behalf of the ACE Mentor Los Angeles Metropolitan Area Board of Directors, we welcome you to our 2015 Student Presentation Event and we thank you for being here. Your time and support are greatly appreciated.

Today we celebrate the students and their project presentations, which are the result of the students’ hard work, and of support from their dedicated mentors and faculty advisors. Our students are our inspiration – and they are our future. They are also a joy to work with. They are enthusiastic about learning what the Architecture/ Construction/ Engineering industry is all about - and we do our best to give them as much information as possible to assist them in their career decisions.

Special thanks go out to this Event Committee, the Scholarship Committee, the ACE students, their parents, and especially the mentors and teachers who volunteer their time to ACE. Through their dedicated efforts, ACE has achieved continued growth and success in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, as well as the Inland Empire which has just established its own affiliate.

Another special thanks goes to all of our board members and year-round financial supporters who make this event and the students’ scholarships possible. This year with the help of our industry sponsors and fundraising events, we will award $90,000 in scholarships to high school seniors as well as to our former students who are now in college pursing A/C/E careers - and we hope to increase that number each year!

Today, ACE Mentor Los Angeles includes 30 schools, 20 mentor teams, over 350 students and more than 100 mentors in Los Angeles and Orange Counties – with a goal to continue this growth and inspire more students to enter the design and construction industry. Thus, there are always new opportunities for new mentor teams in the upcoming school year.

Lori GuidryBoard ChairmanACE Mentor Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, Inc.President, Development Industries, Inc.

To all of our students: Thank you for your enthusiasm and for your interest in learning about the A/C/E industry! For those of you who will be returning to ACE in the fall, we look forward to your continued participation.

To our graduating seniors: Congratulations, good luck, and remember that we are very proud of you!

mission statement

The ACE Mentor Program was founded by the principals of leading design and construction firms, to introduce high school students to career opportunities in the industry.

After several years of experimenting with various mentoring models, ACE was born in New York City in 1994 when seventeen firms banded together into 3 teams, each organized like a typical design and construction team, and “adopted” about 90 students from local high schools. Volunteers from each of the firms, serving as mentors, worked directly with the students to introduce them to the broad range of people and projects within the construction industry.

Students were introduced to the various design professions and the role that each performs in planning, designing and constructing a project. Students also gained first hand insight into the design industry by touring project offices and visiting active construction sites. And students worked closely with their mentors to solve challenging “real world” projects.

In the spring of 1995, ACE held its first fundraiser event, to establish a scholarship program for ACE graduates. Scholarships continue to be awarded on an annual basis to ACE graduates who go on to study in college for a career in the design and construction industry, or who progress through apprenticeship into the building trades. ACE continues to grow—both vertically and laterally. Chapters are “under construction” in cities across the United States, and existing chapters continue to add new mentoring firms to improve the quality of their programs.

The ACE Mentor Program serves high school students who are exploring careers in Architecture, Construction, or Engineering. The mentors are professionals from leading design and construction firms who volunteer their time and energy. The program is designed to engage, inform, and challenge youth.

The mission of the ACE Mentor Program is threefold:

• To enlighten and motivate students towards architecture, construction, engineering, and related careers.

• To provide mentoring opportunities for future designers and constructors. • To provide scholarship assistance.

ACE makes a special attempt to reach students that otherwise may not become aware of the challenges and rewards of a career in the design and construction industry. Our interest in the students extends to their eventual successful employment in the design and construction industry. To this end, several other activities are important facets of the program:

• Scholarships for selected graduates of the program over the course of four years if the student continues to progress.

• Participating companies are encouraged to hire qualified ACE students for summer jobs. • Mentors are encouraged to form and maintain positive relationships with the students.

alumni activities

OBJECTIVES OF OUR ALUMNI EFFORT

• Maintain contact and continue mentoring the students after high school.

• Encourage progress toward careers in design and construction.

• Assist students with reaching their career and life goals.

THE SIZE OF THE TASK

In the first year of existence (2003), ACE Los Angeles awarded scholarships to 9 students. This number continues to grow and through the end of 2014, ACE Los Angeles has awarded approximately 800 scholarships to ACE Students. We encourage all the students to keep us updated on their career progress and current endeavors, but unfortunately it is sometimes a difficult task to stay in contact or keep us current with their contact information.

WHERE ARE THEY? Our students have entered the following schools:

Brown UniversityCal Poly PomonaCal Poly San Luis ObispoCalifornia State University Campuses:Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, San Francisco,San Diego, San Jose College of the DesertCommunity Colleges:Citrus, East Los Angeles, Glendale, Fountain Valley, Irvine Valley, Los Angeles Pierce, Los Angeles El Camino, Los Angeles Trade Technical, Norco, Orange Coast, Palm Desert, Pasadena, Santa Ana, Santa Monica, Santiago CanyonCornell UniversityFranklin & Marshall CollegeHarvey Mudd CollegeLoyola Marymount UniversityMassachusetts Institute of Technology

Purdue UniversityRice UniversitySanta Clara UniversitySouthern California Institute of ArchitectureStanford UniversityUniversity of California campuses:Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa BarbaraUniversity of MichiganUniversity of Nevada Las VegasUniversity of PennsylvaniaUniversity of Southern CaliforniaWabash CollegeWoodbury University

HOW DO WE ADMINISTER THE PROGRAM?

• We keep a database of our students with their current contact information.

• It is important that the student maintains contact with the ACE Mentor Program with current info.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE RESULTS?

Five of our ACE Alumni are back in our high schools as part of the mentoring teams. Another is teaching math and physics at his high school alma mater. Many others are working in the design and construction professions.

scholarships

ACE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

From the beginning of its work in Los Angeles, the ACE Mentor Program has offered scholarships to students who have been active in ACE activities during high school, and have then decided to continue their studies or training in pursuit of a career in Architecture, Construction, or Engineering. The minimum requirements for the scholarship program are as follows:

• Be an active participant of ACE Mentor Program for at least one academic year during high school.

• Obtain a High School Diploma.

• Provide proof of enrollment in an ACE discipline in a college or university, or enrollment in an organized apprenticeship program for one of the skilled building trades.

TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED

ACE-Los Angeles Local Scholarship – High School Graduating Seniors:High School Seniors who have been participating in the ACE Program and intend to pursue a career in an ACE related field of Architecture, Construction, or Engineering are given an opportunity to receive a cash scholarship of $1,000 or more for their first year of college or training. The number and amount of scholarships provided are dependent on the available scholarship funds from ACE Los Angeles for that year and the relative qualifications of the applicants.

ACE-Los Angeles Local Scholarship – College Students or Apprenticeship Participants:ACE students who are enrolled in their second or subsequent years of college or an apprenticeship program in an ACE related field are allowed the opportunity to apply for additional cash scholarships. In the past, some students have received up to $4,000-

$5,000 throughout their college or training career. These scholarships are dependent on the student demonstrating satisfactory progress in his/her ACE discipline and available scholarship funds by ACE Los Angeles during each year.

ACE Los Angeles Special Scholarships:From time to time there are special donors who have similar objectives as the ACE Program and graciously offer individual scholarships to our ACE Students who meet their special requirements. The ACE Los Angeles Mentor Program is committed in notifying our ACE students of these special opportunities when they become available. In the past, these additional scholarship opportunities have ranged from an additional $1,000-$4,000 per scholarship award.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications and information are distributed directly through the Los Angeles Local Chapter and is typically distributed via e-mail through the student and/or ACE Mentors. Once a student graduates from High School, it is important that the student maintain an updated contact information with the ACE Los Angeles Chapter included current e-mail address in order to be informed of upcoming opportunities. Please note that the application process for Graduating High School Seniors occurs during the months of February-April, and applications for those students already in college or in an apprenticeship program occur during the months of September-October. For more information on the ACE Los Angeles Scholarships please e-mail us at [email protected].

all-schools day

On October 11, 2014, at the SCI-ARC main auditorium, over 250 Ace Mentees and Mentors gathered once again to kick off the ACE Mentor All Schools Day event. The students, teachers, professionals and 12 brave Lego people did not disappoint the crowd. Our students demonstrated teamwork, leadership, creativity, innovation and craftsmanship while completing this year’s design/build competition, “The Vue”. Our high school teams were challenged to build a cantilevered viewing platform overlooking the Grand Canyon.

Each team was given 400 Popsicle sticks, various types of pasta, glue sticks and 5 brave Lego men and women. The platforms were a minimum of 36 inches long and 12 inches wide. With the brave Lego people on the platform, a load test was conducted. While no Lego people were injured, the crowd cheered as they watched as President Business loaded each bridge with iron bars to failure.

The students designed and built outstanding structures and the competition was close, resulting in a four way tie for 2nd place between Downtown LA #1, Susan Miller Dorsey, Century and Santa Monica. Our 2014 Strong Bridge award went to Applied Technology Center #2.

The Judges Award went to John Marshall, a second time winner, for a beautifully designed bridge that captured the Judges’ attention for its level of detail and craftsmanship. At the end of the day, a total of 19 platforms were smashed to bits.

A special thank you goes out to SCI-ARC for hosting the event, John A Martin Associates for photography, Swinerton Builders for donating the test equipment, tables and audio systems and to Westfield Corporation for event planning.

Congratulations ACE Mentees on a project well done!

trades day

Over the past nine years, ACE has been proud to offer an annual Trades Day to highlight the rich and rewarding career opportunities within the construction trades to our students. For the 2014/2015 program, ACE was able to offer a record four Trades Days this year.

A wide range of fun hands-on activities were successfully completed by the over 300 students who participated in one or more of the days. Masonry walls were built. Walls were framed out of wood. A duct system was built. Piping was put together. Electrical circuits were wired and the lights turned on. Anchors were installed into concrete. Safety was taught. The apprenticeship programs and careers paths available within the construction trades were highlighted.

Without the wonderful support of our volunteers and supporting firms and organizations, we could not bring these special events to life. To those who have made this possible, thank you on behalf of a grateful Affiliate and our hundreds of students who have been treated to an experience that they will always remember. We wish to extend a special thanks to the following individuals, firms, and organizations:

“ In a world of competition, I am grateful to have my supportive ACE mentors and fellow team members by my side. Although we all started off as strangers, we are now part of a family which I take great pride in. I am very thankful for ACE!”

“...being able to interact with professionals and college students; learning what its like in the real world.”

“...spending time with my mentors and learning what they do.””

“The most enjoyable part was learning how to work together.””

“...I hope that you are able to bring as much joy to new high school ACE members as you have given me. I’m currently a sophomore studying mechanical engineering at UCLA.This is the second year that I have received the ACE LA Scholarship, and it has enabled me to buy a computer that can run the programs I am beginning to need... The prospect of working in the industry is very exciting for me, and I probably would not have discovered my real interest in engineering if it weren’t for the ACE Mentor Program. Thank you all so much for making this possible!” – ACE Alumni
